Prayagraj admin begins delimitation of gram panchayats ahead of polls
Prayagraj: As preparations intensify for the upcoming panchayat elections, the district administration has initiated delimitation process of existing gram panchayats. This exercise is undertaken as part of the Peri-Urban Scheme, which aims to redefine administrative boundaries in light of changing demographic and infrastructural patterns.
According to officials, a list of 141 gram panchayats was compiled that are either adjacent to urban areas or fall close to nagar panchayats, making them prime candidates for reclassification based on urban characteristics.
District panchayati raj officer, Prayagraj, Ravi Shankar Dwivedi said: "Under the Peri-Urban Scheme, a survey was conducted across the district. A list of 141 gram panchayats was forwarded to the state govt.
Final decisions on their status and boundaries will be made at the govt level."
The Peri-Urban Scheme is a govt initiative focused on the sustainable development and management of transitional zones that lie between rural and urban boundaries. These zones typically exhibit both rural and urban characteristics and are crucial in shaping a city's growth. The scheme addresses issues like unplanned expansion, lack of proper infrastructure and environmental challenges.
Officials noted that gram panchayats where agricultural activity is diminishing and urban facilities are on the rise, such as commercial establishments, petrol pumps, educational institutions and banks, are likely to be reclassified as urban areas. This reclassification would bring them under the jurisdiction of nagar panchayats or municipal bodies.
The 141 gram panchayats are spread across development blocks in Prayagraj. These include 20 from Bahadurpur, Handia (14), Kaudihar (1), Koraon (13), Manda (2), Mauaima (7), Shringverpur Dham (5), Soraon (10), Urwa (5), Meja (3), Chaka (16), Bhagwatpur (4), Karachhana (14), Sahson (4), Shankargarh (6), Phulpur (11), and Jasra (6).
This delimitation is expected to improve planning and resource allocation, as well as ensure that rapidly developing areas receive appropriate governance and infrastructure support.
