New judges to be sworn in on July 28
Eight judges have been newly appointed to the Court of Appeal. PETALING JAYA : Eight newly appointed Court of Appeal judges and 14 High Court judges are scheduled to be sworn in on July 28. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the appointment process had gone through the necessary stages, including assessment by the Judicial Appointments Commission, discussions with the Malay rulers, and obtaining the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Bernama reported. 'Many have asked me why it was not announced earlier. I cannot answer arbitrarily because the process of appointing judges involves the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. 'It needs to go through discussions with the rulers and after it is agreed, it will then be brought back to the Agong for consent,' he said when launching the Bumiputera Master Plan, Tunas Madani, and a housing project in Permatang Pauh, Penang, today. He said no judges were removed or dismissed as some parties have portrayed. Rather, the process of selecting new judges must be done carefully and with full respect for the constitutional monarchy system. At the event, organised by the Penang Bumiputera Development Council, Anwar launched the Penang Bumiputera Development Master Plan (PIPBPP) 2026-2035, the Tunas Madani Programme, and the JKP Sdn Bhd housing project to assist the Bumiputera community in Penang. The launch of the PIPBPP 2026-2035 will be the main strategic guide in driving the development of the Bumiputera community in Penang. It was developed in collaboration with Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Mara as consultants and researchers with MPBPP. The Tunas Madani Programme was designed with the specific objective of building the capacity of Bumiputera graduates to be involved in entrepreneurship. The housing project by JKPSB involves the construction of 3,231 residential units in Permatang Pauh at a total development cost of RM1 billion.

'No cracks in PKR': Rafizi, Nik Nazmi quit Cabinet, not party — Saifuddin
PUTRAJAYA: PKR election director Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has downplayed concerns over ministers resigning following the party's recent electoral setbacks, saying the party has endured far more turbulent times and emerged stronger. "When reflecting on what has happened within PKR, it is important to recall that we initially began as the Madani civil society movement. At that time, people gave us just three months before saying we would fail," he told Berita Harian in a special interview. Saifuddin added that PKR's own founding was met with scepticism and yet it contested and won five parliamentary and state assembly seats. "In 2004, we only held onto Permatang Pauh, but by 2008 we had become the largest opposition with 33 seats," he added. Recalling the aftermath of the Sheraton Move, Saifuddin said the party was thought to be on the verge of collapse as people such as Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin were not minor figures. "Still, we got back on our feet, reorganised, and carried on," he added. He said PKR has experienced all manner of political upheavals and internal shifts and, while outsiders may panic, the party had always been able to recover. On the resignations of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from their Cabinet positions, Saifuddin said these should not be conflated with party desertions. "Rafizi did not leave the party. He merely stepped down from his ministerial post out of principle. That is all, and we respect that. "The same goes for Nik Nazmi—he did not leave the party. He stepped down as a minister but remains within the party," he added. Saifuddin highlighted that what mattered most was that PKR members and leaders had clarity on the party's direction. "Most importantly, we give our assurance to our partners in the unity government that what is happening is part of PKR's political dynamics, and we remain committed to staying in government," he added. On May 28, Nik Nazmi, who is the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, announced that he had submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, effective July 4. His announcement came about three hours after Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli announced his resignation as economy minister effective June 17.

UMNO Urged to Win Support of Voters Under 40: Shamsul
PERMATANG PAUH: UMNO leadership at the branch and division levels must play a vital role in gaining the support of voters aged under 40 so that the party remains the choice in the upcoming elections, said UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah. He said this group of voters is highly critical, more open, and dynamic and seeks a party that is genuinely seen as capable of offering the best for their future. 'UMNO division and branch leadership must consider how to ensure UMNO remains as the best party while also projecting a positive image to gain the support of young people,' he said after officiating the 2025 Permatang Pauh Women, Youth, and Puteri delegates' meetings held here today. The Deputy Home Minister said if UMNO succeeds in gaining support from the Malay community and the younger generation, the party could rise again to become the dominant political party in the country. '...it means we have to win many seats. Regarding the distribution of seats and which constituencies to contest in, we leave it to the party leadership,' he said. Shamsul Anuar said UMNO must remain proactive in responding to the people's concerns to stay relevant and be seen as a party that matters. He said UMNO's focus is to prepare the party in all aspects in preparation for the state elections in Sabah, Melaka, and Johor, as well as the next General Election.

'Puteri Reformasi' Now PKR Deputy President
JOHOR BAHRU, May 23 (Bernama) -- Nurul Izzah Anwar has solidified her position in the top leadership of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) by winning the deputy president post for the 2025-2028 term, marking a significant milestone in her political journey. The success of the 'Puteri Reformasi' in securing the post from the sole contender and incumbent, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, reflects the grassroots' confidence in her role and ideals that she has championed since PKR was founded nearly three decades ago. Nurul Izzah won with 9,803 votes. Rising from the vice presidency, the 44-year-old Nurul Izzah has now ascended to the party's second-highest position and is regarded as a leading figure of PKR's new generation of leadership ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16). Nurul Izzah, the eldest daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PKR president, and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, held the vice-president post from 2010 until her resignation in 2018. During the party election in 2022, Nurul Izzah did not contest but was reappointed to the same post. After various rumours, she confirmed her candidacy for deputy president on May 9, taking into account the views of the grassroots. Prior to this, the Penang State Leadership Council chairman successfully retained her position as Permatang Pauh division chief in the 2025-2028 election. Nurul Izzah, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Tenaga Nasional and a Master's degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University, USA, advanced her political career by winning the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat in GE12, defeating the then-incumbent Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. She retained the same seat in GE13 before shifting to Permatang Pauh, winning decisively in GE14, but lost in GE15.
