Elderly driver survives crash into Butterworth building

PETALING JAYA: A 77-year-old man sustained minor injuries when his Perodua Kenari crashed into a building under renovation on Jalan Jetty Lama in Butterworth today. According to the New Straits Times, the Butterworth fire station received the emergency call at 2.03pm and arrived at the scene within five minutes. G. Palanivelu, who was found trapped in the driver's seat when rescue teams arrived, had lost control of the vehicle before it collided with the structure. Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said the rescue team, equipped with full PPE, used specialised tools to safely extricate the victim by 2.28pm before handing him over to paramedics for further treatment. He added that firefighters worked with the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) to clear debris from the crash site following the rescue operation.

The Butterworth fire station was alerted to the incident at 2.03pm and arrived at the scene five minutes later. The incident occurred when the vehicle lost control and collided with the structure. Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said, when they arrived at the scene, they found G. Palanivelu, trapped in the car's driver seat. "Equipped with full PPE, the rescue team used specialised tools to extricate him safely by 2.28pm. The injured man was then handed over to paramedics for further treatment," he said in a statement today. John said firefighters continued clearing debris from the site with assistance from the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP).

BATU PAHAT: An elderly couple were killed after the car they were travelling in crashed into the rear of a trailer along Jalan Bindu here today. In the 9.25am accident, Mazalan Belia, 69, died upon arrival at the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI), while his wife, Radin Fauziah Radin Ahmad, 75, succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the same hospital. It is understood that the couple were travelling from Parit Raja to visit Mazalan's family in Parit Abd Rahman. Upon reaching the scene, the Perodua Kenari driven by Mazalan is believed to have rammed into the rear of a lorry at the traffic light intersection on Jalan Bindu. Meanwhile, Penggaram Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Zulmazi Arifin said the department received a distress call at 9.33am. He said a team of 12 firefighters, including personnel from the Batu Pahat station, was deployed to the scene to assist in extracting the victims. "Upon arrival, we found both victims trapped inside their vehicle. They were successfully extricated and handed over to the medical team for further action," he said in a statement.

Sandakan Civil Defence officer Capt. Sulaiman Salama said no casualties were reported. Rescuers used three chainsaws to clear the road which reopened by 6.56pm.
