Neha Bhasin opens up on battling fat-shaming and why she attempted suicide
In a heartfelt confession, singer Neha Bhasin has opened up about the severe toll that years of body shaming took on her mental health. She revealed that the persistent fat-shaming deeply damaged her self-esteem and ultimately drove her to attempt suicide. Back in 2002, Neha was a member of Viva, India's first all-girl pop group, alongside Seema Ramchandani, Pratichee Mohapatra, Mahua Kamat, and Anushka Manchanda. Neha Bhasin reveals she attempted suicide at 20
During her appearance on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa's Bharti TV podcast, Neha Bhasin recounted the incident that drove her to a breaking point. She explained how, during a meeting in a conference room, someone played a video on a large screen and circled her stomach, saying, 'See, you are so fat. That's why we can't release the video.' At that time, she weighed only 50 kg. Deeply hurt and frustrated, Neha went home and, in an impulsive act of desperation, consumed over half a bottle of fat burners in an attempt to end her life, which left her vomiting for two days. Her bandmates had no idea what she had gone through. Neha also shared that after a heated dispute with the channel, she tried to speak directly with its head, but another man entered the room during the conversation and proceeded to harass her.
Neha's work in the industry
After Viva broke up in 2004, Neha shifted her focus to playback singing. One of her first notable songs, Kuch Khass Hai, earned her a Filmfare nomination. She went on to win the Vijay Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2008 for Pesugiren Pesugiren. Later, Neha added two more Filmfare Awards to her name for the songs Jag Ghoomeya and Paani Ravi Da.
