"Often cloudy with patchy drizzle across parts of northwest Scotland," today's Met Office forecast said. "Elsewhere, it will be mostly dry with plenty of strong sunshine. "Some cloud at times, with a risk of an isolated shower developing across the southwest during the afternoon." Marco Petagna, senior meteorologist at the Met Office, added that Brits can expect to enjoy exponentially rising heat as we head into next week. And from Thursday, revellers can build on that base tan as temperatures are set to hit as high as 31C. He said: 'I think Wednesday is probably going to be the day when we could start to reach the thresholds of 25 to 28 degrees, depending on where you are. Yet the duration of the hot spell remains difficult to gauge, and there are uncertainties about just how high temperatures will rise. It also appears as though the UK will avoid the stifling weather of the high 30s and low 40s seen in the Mediterranean. Mr Petagna said: 'It's a bit of a question mark going through the weekend early next week as to how long the heat will last and how high the temperatures will get, because some models are sort of pushing the heat away a bit more quickly, whereas others keep the heat going. 'At this stage it looks as though certainly into next weekend, we should hold on to hot weather across the south of the UK and temperatures could again certainly get into the low 30s in a few spots. 5 Revellers relaxing in the sunshine during a lunch break in the capital Credit: Alamy 5 One of four ice cream vans on Westminster Bridge attracts tourists on a sunny afternoon yesterday Credit: Alamy

Met Office warns of third heatwave as temperatures top 30C
The Met Office has released new weather maps which show another heatwave on the way to the UK - by the end of this week, Brits could be back sunbathing in 30C heat Brits are set to bask in the sun again as a third heatwave is on the cards by the end of this week - with temperatures expecting to soar above 30C. A new weather map from Met Office has revealed that the southeast could experience the hottest conditions, with London predicted to reach 29C from around 4pm this Thursday. Following closely behind is Cardiff at 27C, and Manchester at 25C. From there, things will only get better with sun-seekers set to bask in sizzling temperatures, reaching into the low 30s. The weekend will be off to a bright start before humidity kicks in and remains overnight. Sadly, most of Scotland won't make it past the low 20s until the weekend, with some areas to the far north likely to reach only 16C. Heatwave conditions are expected to be declared on Friday, when temperatures will have stayed above the seasonal average for three days in a row. Marco Petagna, senior meteorologist at the Met Office, explained that the weather will start to turn balmy on Wednesday, with dry conditions returning after several areas were plunged under thunderstorm warnings last night. The expert said: 'I think Wednesday is probably going to be the day when we could start to reach the thresholds of 25 to 28 degrees, depending on where you are." He added: "We probably won't actually reach an official heatwave until around Friday, to give the three consecutive days at those temperatures. But temperatures are going to continue to climb as we go toward the end of the week and certainly by Friday and Saturday we could see 30 degrees, perhaps just nudging into the low 30s. "At the weekend, we could just start to see humidity increasing a little bit as well and nighttime temperatures look like they are going to be, so it will be starting to become more uncomfortable by night.' Mr Petagna added: 'It's a bit of a question mark going through the weekend early next week as to how long the heat will last and how high the temperatures will get, because some models are sort of pushing the heat away a bit more quickly, whereas others keep the heat going. 'At this stage it looks as though certainly into next weekend, we should hold on to hot weather across the south of the UK and temperatures could again certainly get into the low 30s in a few spots. And we are going to see some very high pollen and very high UV levels as well. But at this stage, we've managed to escape some of the very highest temperatures, those seen across Spain and Portugal in particular, where it has reached the mid-40s.' Outlook for Wednesday to Friday Mainly dry as high pressure builds through this period. Plenty of sunny spells, though the far northwest will be cloudy initially. Turning very warm, locally hot once again. Long range forecast The forecast, based for Jul 11 to Jul 20, states: "Many parts of the UK are expected to be part way through a period of high temperatures and humidity at the start of this period. The duration, geographical extent and intensity of the heat are all rather uncertain at present, but there is the potential for some very hot weather to be realised, especially across some inland southern and eastern areas. "With this also comes the possibility of thunderstorms, in part because of the high temperatures, but also in association with any frontal systems moving in from the west, which would ultimately usher in cooler and fresher conditions. Towards the latter part of the period, northwestern areas stand a greater chance of experiencing rather more changeable conditions, with drier and occasionally hotter spells more likely further southeast."

Scotland weather to hit 'up to 28C' amid heatwave across country
The Met Office has said that it will be the third UK heatwave of the year, and temperatures in some of Scotland's cities are expected to peak at 28C. After a wetter and cooler spell of weather in early July, temperatures are predicted to climb through this week, hitting highs on Friday or Saturday, depending on where you are. In Glasgow and Edinburgh, the Met Office is predicting highs of 28C on Saturday, slightly up on temperatures of around 26/27C on Friday and Sunday. The hot weather will coincide with Glasgow's TRNSMT festival, the largest music festival in Scotland. Aberdeen will avoid the worst of the heat but still see highs of around 24C on Thursday ahead of a hot weekend, the Met Office forecasted. In Scotland, temperatures of above 25C have to be recorded for three days running for it to be considered a heatwave. The thresholds are higher in the English south east. Speaking of the UK as a whole, Marco Petagna, a senior meteorologist at the Met Office, said: 'I think Wednesday is probably going to be the day when we could start to reach the thresholds of 25 to 28 degrees, depending on where you are. 'But of course, you need three days at those temperatures for it to be able to be called a technical heatwave. 'So, although the temperature will be reaching the criteria, we probably won't actually reach an official heatwave until around Friday, to give the three consecutive days at those temperatures. UK weather maps turn red as 35C heatwave forecast across all of Britain
Weather maps are turning a dark red again later this month as more scorching temperatures hit the UK in a 35C heatwave after a brief cooler spell with wind and rain Brits are set for scorching temperatures up and down the country with maps turning red in a 35C heatwave. The Met Office confirmed that 34.7C was recorded at St James's Park in central London on Tuesday afternoon, beating a 34.4C reading recorded in Writtle, Essex earlier in the day. And just as many are breathing a sigh of relief with cooler temperatures this weekend, weather maps show the mercury will soon hit the mid-30Cs again. Over the coming days it is going to continue to feel fresh with wind and rain sweeping in from the Atlantic but the mercury will begin to rise again by the end of the week. And into the weekend maps appear red up and down the country on Sunday. For Saturday it is a generally hot day with the highest temperatures in central and southern England where it could hit 35C, according to maps from WXCharts. Then a day later the higher temperatures are more widespread with most of the country seeing the mercury reach the high 20Cs or into the 30Cs. Before that though we have thunderstorms for today ahead of the potential third heatwave. The Met Office said there is a mixed forecast for Sunday and Monday, before temperatures are expected to climb back into the 30Cs by the end of next week – raising the possibility of a third heatwave this summer. Parts of East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the East of England are set for heavy rain, lightning and hail on Sunday, which could cause disruption to transport links. Marco Petagna, senior meteorologist at the Met Office, said: 'The headline is a changeable theme to the next couple of days and then the weather will become more settled as we go into next week. 'It could well reach heatwave criteria again across England and Wales towards the end of next week. In the short term, it's quite a mixed picture. There's a lot of cloud around, and bits and pieces of showery rain around. 'Across the East of England, the weather could turn heavy and thundery and there's a warning out for thunderstorms between 7am to 7pm, because of the unsettled atmosphere. We could see an inch or two of rain and several thunderstorms there on Sunday, and that showery scene continues into Monday as well, especially in the north and east of the UK.' The Met Office said the cooler conditions are set to subside, with much of the country seeing more settled weather moving further into the week. And temperatures rising could lead to a third heatwave – a period of three or more consecutive days of temperatures higher than a location-based threshold – this summer. But Mr Petagna said it is difficult to predict the duration of the hot weather. He said: 'It looks like we will meet heatwave criteria again by the end of the week. The main uncertainty is how warm it does become and how long the increase in temperature lasts for. 'The trend to warmer weather, particularly across England and Wales, certainly looks pretty good going into the week ahead. It will start to feel a bit more humid in the week ahead and also night-time temperatures are going to start to pick up, so it's going to become more uncomfortable for sleeping.'
