Stars hire Oilers assistant Glen Gulutzan as head coach, his 2nd stint with the team
The Dallas Stars have hired Glen Gulutzan as their head coach 12 years after he was fired from his first stint with them. General manager Jim Nill announced the move Tuesday, with Gulutzan succeeding Peter DeBoer, who was fired following the team's playoff elimination in the Western Conference final. Back in 2013, firing Gulutzan was one of Nill's first act when he took over. Gulutzan, who turns 54 in August, returns to Dallas after spending the past seven seasons as an assistant with the Edmonton Oilers, including the past two that ended with trips to the Stanley Cup final. This is his third job in charge of an NHL team after leading the Stars from 2011-13 and the Calgary Flames from 2016-18.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Stars have hired Glen Gulutzan as their head coach 12 years after he was fired from his first stint with them. Abbotsford Canucks: Could (should?) Manny Malhotra fill Dallas Stars' coaching vacancy?
It's not whether could Manny Malhotra run his first NHL bench next season. It's should the Calder Cup champion head coach fill the Dallas Stars' vacancy after guiding the Abbotsford Canucks to a remarkable and resilient AHL season as a rookie bench boss? Article content Malhotra, 45, is a hot commodity, but the heat is always on in Dallas to take the next step. To finally clear that big Western Conference final hurdle and get back to the Stanley Cup final after three-straight failures under head coach Peter DeBoer, who was fired June 6. Article content Article content Article content The Stars' anxiousness was reflected is signing pending UFA centre Matt Duchene, 34, on Thursday to a team-friendly, four-year, $18-million US extension. The Stars got a palatable salary cap hit, and Duchene, who was on the Vancouver Canucks ' radar to fix their riddle in the middle, got term. Article content Duchene had 30 goals and 82 points this season, and his contract extension was another indication that Dallas has unfinished business. What does this possibly mean for Malhotra? Article content There is a reason why the Stars are still waiting to fill their coaching void. It's Malhotra. He's well beyond a curiosity. Article content Stars general manager Jim Nill could convince owner Tom Gaglardi to go the customary route and chose from a number of seasoned coaches to push a veteran-laden roster. They may need a heavy old-school hand. That list includes those fired this season, others looking for another shot in The Show, and those worthy of taking the next career step. Article content Article content However, Gaglardi could believe a fresh voice in Malhotra amid a fast-changing game may be a worthy play. It worked for the Washington Capitals and Spencer Carbery. At 43, the Victoria native was an AHL head coach and turned his second season running an NHL bench into the Jack Adams Award in 2024-25. Article content The Stars could chose familiarity and promote Texas Stars head coach Neil Graham after five seasons of running the AHL affiliate bench. An assessment trip to Cedar Park, Tex. this month would have been prudent. Watching Graham, 40, match Western Conference final wits with Malhotra would check boxes. Article content Article content Malhotra's management is a culmination of 1,026 NHL games as a centre with seven teams — including three seasons with the Stars — and seven seasons as an NHL assistant. And the manner in which young impressionable players and grizzled veterans responded to Malhotra in Abbotsford is beyond noteworthy.

Stars Release Statement After Shocking Firing of Peter DeBoer
Stars Release Statement After Shocking Firing of Peter DeBoer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Stars have fired head coach Peter DeBoer after losing in the Western Conference Final. This move comes after a disappointing ending to the season for Dallas and some major backlash from the players. Advertisement Stars general manager Jim Nill released a statement on the firing of the veteran coach. 'After careful consideration, we believe that a new voice is needed in our locker room to push us closer to our goal of winning the Stanley Cup,' Nill said. 'We'd like to thank Pete for everything that he has helped our organization achieve over the past three seasons and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.' DeBoer posted a record of 149-68-29 over 246 regular-season games with the Stars. The veteran coach went 29-27 in the postseason, including helping Dallas make three straight Western Conference Final appearances. But the team couldn't get over the hump to win the Stanley Cup. The team never made the Stanley Cup Final under the leadership of DeBoer. Dallas Stars head coach Peter DeBoer looks on during the first period against the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center. David Banks-Imagn Images A lot of this firing likely had to do with how DeBoer handled star goalie Jake Oettinger in the final game of the conference final this year. Oettinger was pulled from the game early after allowing multiple goals, and DeBoer then threw him under the bus. Advertisement "The reality is, if you go back to last year's playoffs, he's lost six of seven games to Edmonton and we gave up two (goals) on two (shots) in an elimination game," DeBoer said of Oettinger. "It was partly to spark our team and wake them up and partly knowing that status quo had not been working. And that's a pretty big sample size." Many people in the organization didn't like this from DeBoer, and he now has suffered the consequences of his actions. Dallas will now look for a new leader to help this team go forward. The Stars have a lot of talent on the roster, but they need to figure out how to maximize this group going forward. Peter DeBoer sealed fate with Stars after unbecoming response to ill-fated decision
It wasn't all that long ago Paul Maurice was kind of on a Peter DeBoer career track as a recognized recyclable behind the bench, but slightly less successful. Now, Maurice, who won the Stanley Cup last year in Florida on his fifth team after having coached 1,849 regular-season games, has become Yoda. Though DeBoer doused himself with gasoline and self-immolated in Dallas after a third consecutive conference finals defeat — in which the coach humiliated franchise goaltender Jake Oettinger after pulling him 7:09 into a do-or-die Game 5 because the Oilers had scored twice on two uncontested shots, then pointed the finger at him in the post-mortem. Advertisement There was no world in which the coach was going to be able to return and command the room after that. The decision to pull Oettinger in favor of Casey DeSmith was preposterous, and the postgame doubling-down on it was unbecoming.
