Stephen O'Neill cautiously optimistic about Tyrone's chances against Kerry
Tyrone great Stephen O'Neill believes his county can beat Kerry in their All-Ireland semi-final clash on Saturday. The 2005 Footballer of the Year, speaking at an AIB event this week, suggested that Tyrone would be looking for a big improvement on their quarter-final victory against Dublin that could push them over the line. 'I think Tyrone are going to do it. Watching the Dublin game, I said, 'whoever manages to come out on top in this game is going to go into the semi-final in a really good way'. Thankfully, Tyrone managed to finish really strong and get a flurry of scores. 'I thought they'd a lot of mistakes in the Dublin game, so I'm sure the Tyrone lads will want to address that. I'm hoping that, along with Kerry maybe not being able to produce what they did against Armagh, will hopefully get us across the line.' READ MORE Two-pointers were key for Tyrone in the quarters and O'Neill believes that they could play a big role in the semi-final. 'Tyrone are blessed to have people like Peter Harte, Mattie Donnelly, boys who've experience and have the skill set that can produce those type of shots. Tyrone will definitely get pressed out [in defence] and not let people, especially Sean O'Shea and Clifford get shots from that far out.' Having beaten Kerry this season en route to under-20 and minor All-Ireland successes, Tyrone have enjoyed another stellar year of underage success. O'Neill says it bodes well for the future in the county, but is also mindful that underage titles don't always translate into silverware at senior level. 'People are asking, what is the secret? I think it's just the drive within the clubs in Tyrone. The underage talent has been there for the last 15-20 years. Tyrone have probably been the most successful county over that period of time. 'But it's a big step getting from under-20 to play senior football; even under-20 into senior club football is a big step, so to step up to senior county football is another massive leap for players. It's hard sometimes to get that talent to come through.' Under-20 forward Eoin McElholm has been particularly impressive, and notched a fantastic point off the bench in the quarter-final, skinning Ciarán Kilkenny and popping it over off his right foot. A jubilant Darren McCurry and manager Malachy O'Rourke of Tyrone after beating Dublin. Photograph: Inpho Despite discussion of whether he could start on the weekend, O'Neill believes that the youngster would deliver a bigger impact off the bench. 'I feel Malachy [O'Rourke] is probably using him the best way. Somebody as explosive as Eoin is, he's just such an asset to have in the last 15, 20 minutes of a game. A player like that, he'll not be a super-sub for too much longer because he's an exceptional talent. 'Any team over the last 10, 15, 20 years, they've needed a strong bench to compete. Seeing him coming on, as a defender, would be your worst nightmare, knowing that he's just lining you up, he's going to take you on.' The former Tyrone forward had been working under Raymond Galligan as a forward's coach for Cavan for the previous two seasons. With Galligan announcing his departure from the role this week, O'Neill reckons the county is well set up to continue developing in the next few years. 'I enjoyed my time with Cavan, Raymond Galligan is a lovely fella, we had a great two years. The county developed, and were within the kick of a ball of getting into Division One this year. It's a job that a lot of people would be vying for. I think Cavan's in a very healthy state.' However, he said that he had not put too much thought into moving into intercounty management himself, despite having coached with Cavan, Antrim and Tyrone. 'People phone you and ask you about certain things, clubs, jobs and things like that. You just have to take it what way it comes and what might interest you. I haven't really given it much thought, to tell you the truth. I'll just enjoy the summer now and the time off after a busy eight months.'

Tyrone stun Donegal as Peter Harte hands Jim McGuinness first Ballybofey loss
JIM McGuinness was beaten in Ballybofey as Donegal manager for the first time in league or championship as Peter Harte's two-pointer sealed a dramatic Tyrone win. Malacy O'Rourke - the only man to beat McGuinness in six seasons in the Ulster SFC with Monaghan in 2013 - saw his team lead the way for the most part and then stave off a late 2 Tyrone stunned the Ulster champions as they fell to defeat at home for the first time in sixteen games 2 Tyrone manager Malachy O'Rourke shakes hands with Donegal manager Jim McGuinness after his side's win Peter Harte's two-pointer with three minutes to play finally swung it Tyrone's way. And a late Cormac Quinn point put the seal on a three-point win for McGuinness's first loss in 16 at MacCumhaill Park, in his two stints stretching back to 2011. Harte's score was reminiscent of the 2016 belter in On an evening for ponchos, sunglasses and woolly hats, the weather was unpredictable and on the field, things were probably going against the grain as well. Tyrone had been watching on, having run the But the result shows that you can never get too far ahead of yourself in the northern province and the teams who go deep into it come away with bumps and bruises. With Shaun Patton having put in a decent warm-up but missing out with an ankle injury. Most read in GAA Football Donegal had lost a foundation from the restarts and Tyrone's Seanie O'Donnell's two first-half goals gave Tyrone a foothold from which they could climb. The first of those came on eight minutes when he punched past Gavin Mulreany when Caolan McGonagle failed to get a proper hold of a raking ball in from Michael McKernan. Sharlene Mawdsley encounters unexpected headache on first trip abroad since GAA boyfriend reveal O'Donnell seemed to be popping up here, there, and everywhere and on 24 minutes he scored his second. This time he came from deep on the run and with Mark Bradley supplying the lay-off, went for power and although Mulreany got something behind it, he couldn't stop it going home due to its sheer power. Donegal were 2-3 to 0-4 down, at sixes and sevens, and Tyrone looked dangerous time and again. Michael Murphy was the one the bulk of those in the home support of 16,120 turned to and Michael Murphy was the one who delivered. Two monster frees against the wind - both worth two in the current currency as they say these days - were meat and drink for the Tiktokers. But Donegal were clawing their way back. Darren McCurry, with a two-pointer, and Kieran McGeary hit two late first-half points for the visitors, with Tyrone going in 2-7 to 0-11 in front. A Ciaran Thompson point took Donegal back to within one, but the moving quarter didn't happen. They would post four wides in succession, and Tyrone would post four points to move into a five-point lead of 2-11 to 0-12. Ben McDonnell, Darragh Canavan and their scoring constant, McCurry, was the one to help things tick along in times of trouble. Murphy, 11 minutes after Donegal's only second-half score, was typically the man to get them going, with another two-pointer from a free. If the 2012 All-Ireland winning captain was almost single-handedly keeping his team in it, Langan was certainly the one playing the support act. A minute later, by now at the midpoint of the second half, he slung over from outside the arc and Donegal were back to just the one down again, before Langan himself equalised. The trajectory now seemed to be Donegal's and second half substitute Patrick McBrearty lamped over another two-pointer and Donegal were 0-20 to 2-12 in front woith just eight left. But when it was in the melting pot, it was Tyrone who graped the initiative to post a huge win. With Cavan winning in Mayo last week to instantly scattered the pigeons and two into one never going to happen with Donegal and Tyrone. Things might not always turn out as they seem. Tyrone strike late to snatch victory over Donegal
Tyrone struck late in Ballybofey to snatch a 2-17 to 0-20 win over Donegal in Group One of the All-Ireland SFC round-robin series on Saturday. Ulster champions Donegal led with eight to play, but Tyrone responded to get level and Peter Harte cracked over a sublime two-pointer to inspire his team to victory and end Jim McGuinness' perfect record as Donegal manager at MacCumhaill Park. This was a game which swung this way and that, but two first-half goals from Seanie O'Donnell - one of four late changes to the Tyrone team - helped the Red Hands into the lead at the break. In tricky conditions, it was Michael Langan and Michael Murphy who carried much of the fight for the hosts, with Langan hitting seven points from play and Murphy eight in total, including three two-point frees. Donegal enjoyed a good start with a couple of early scores, but Tyrone hit back with the first of O'Donnell's goals in the eighth minute when he was quickest to react to Michael McKernan's dropping shot. The second goal came seven minutes later as Conn Kilpatrick put O'Donnell through and he thumped low past Gavin Mulreany - a late change for the injured Shaun Patton. Tyrone led by five, but Donegal ate into the lead with a couple of two-point frees from Michael Murphy, helping them draw level, but Darren McCurry hit back with one of his own at the other end as Tyrone led 2-7 to 0-11 at the end of the opening half. The second half was a slow burner as the sides swapped points before Darren McCurry, who became increasingly influential and finished with 0-7 to his name, hit three on the spin to push the gap out to five, but two-pointers from Murphy and Langan brought Donegal back in before Langan levelled. They were level heading into the final straight when Donegal captain, Patrick McBrearty, was sprung from the bench to land a two-pointer. But Tyrone didn't panic and got themselves back on terms before that inspirational two-pointer from Harte. They managed to drain the clock with Cormac Quinn kicking the insurance late on to seal a huge win as they get ready for the visit of Mayo to Omagh next week, while Donegal will seek to bounce back when they head to Cavan for another Ulster derby.

Malachy O'Rourke insists Tyrone will bounce back after dramatic Ulster SFC semi-final defeat to Armagh
TYRONE boss Malachy O'Rourke insists they will rise again after falling agonisingly short against Armagh. The Red Hands looked dead and buried when Advertisement 2 Tyrone came up on the wrong end of an Ulster GAA Football Senior Championship semi-final cracker against Armagh at St Tiernach's Park in Clones 2 Tyrone manager Malachy O'Rourke insisted his side will bounce back after the defeat But O'Rourke's men produced a stunning surge of 0-7 in a row to go ahead on the hour mark thanks to Eoin McElholm and two-pointers from Peter Harte and Darren McCurry. Armagh showed their experience as All-Ireland champions and turned the game again when Jarly Óg Burns and Stefan Campbell scored before Rory Grugan's last-gasp free after the hooter sounded. O'Rourke knows Tyrone were flat for large spells as stopper Niall Morgan was nullified and they were heavily reliant on 10-point hero McCurry for scores. But the Fermanagh native hailed their spirit ahead of the All-Ireland SFC group stages next month, despite missing out on a first Ulster final since 2021. 'There was good character shown and that's what our number one aim, is to have that, first of all – that we'll fight right to the final whistle. 'We got that but we're just obviously disappointed the quality of our play wasn't what we would have liked. We struggled on both kick-outs a lot of times. 'There were a couple of very strange ones there. I thought Ethan Rafferty seemed to roll and touched it on the ground. 'So, there were a couple of controversial calls there alright but I suppose it went for both teams and we're not going to use that as an excuse.
