Mitch Cohen's Blackbook: Five to follow from Winter Challenge day

NSW racing expert Mitch Cohen has run the rule over all the action at Rosehill Gardens and found a few worth following. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! FIVE TO FOLLOW REFLECT(3rd, Race 1) She was only getting into her work late after making her run from the back but was good through the line. This is a quality filly in the making and will be worth keeping an eye on as we head into the new season. MR VERSE(3rd, Race 4) This lightly-raced galloper went enormous despite just coming up short of delivering a brilliant last to first win. He's only lightly-raced but looks a progressive type capable of bigger things. TUILERIES(4th, Race 6) Back and wide off a slow tempo, the odds-on favourite was always going to find it hard to bridge the gap. She still ran with plenty of merit and is worth giving another chance next start. CORNICHE(3rd, Race 8) In just his second run in the past 12 months, he gave a glimpse of the talent he's always possessed when finishing off strongly behind Romeo's Choice. Disneck (sixth) was similarly good in his return. KING OF ROSEAU(1st, Race 10) It seems as if trainer Peter Snowden has finally unlocked this three-year-old's full potential following his second consecutive impressive win over the Rosehill 1300m. A return to stakes racing looks on the cards. STEWARDS SAY I Show Speed(Race 1): A late scratching on veterinary advice after he was found to be 2/5 lame in the off-foreleg. Highway Strip(Race 3): Jockey Josh Parr reported the gelding continued to race ungenerously and hang out, resulting in clipping the heels of Pony Soprano, which came down. Will have to trial twice before racing again. Pony Soprano(Race 3): After falling, was found to have swelling over the bridge of the nose, blood present in both nostrils and multiple lacerations to both forelegs. He will be spelled. Maori Chief(Race 4): Found to be slow to recover post-race. Hell To Pay(Race 4): Raced keenly in the lead. Was found to be 1/5 lame in the near foreleg. Gentileschi(Race 7): Was found to be displaying a poor recovery rate post-race. She will now be spelled. Our Kobison(Race 8): Failed to let down under pressure and finished a long last. Will undergo a full veterinary examination in the coming days. CRUNCH TIME Without Peer(Race 1): The winner made his run with Spice Prawn from the back of the field and the pair fought the finish out, running the last 600m of 34.41 and 34.33 seconds respectively. Mr Verse(Race 4): Made up a stack of ground from the back in the field with a race-best last 600m of 33.66 seconds to finish a close third. It stacked up favourable against winner Amusing (34.04) and runner-up Sister Daae (33.89). Tulleries(Race 6): She had it all to do back and wide off a slow tempo before surging home one of the fastest last 600m of the meeting in 32.99 seconds. She had slick closing splits of 10.67 and 11.03. Disneck (Race 8): Rattled home first-up with the fastest last 600m of the meeting of 32.57 seconds, half a second quicker than the winner Romeo's Choice (33.07). His three final furlongs of 10.86, 10.66 and 11.05 were race best. TRACK TALK 'I had in the back of my mind all day, when Tim Clark won The Ingham on him, the fight he showed in the battle. I was relying on that but thank God we got him to win.' Josh Parr after Robusto's Winter Challenge win. 'He surprised us a bit. He has a lot of talent but is still very raw.' Johann Gerard-Dubord discusses debut winner Without Peer. 'I slightly put my neck on the line because he went online and I persuaded OTI (Racing) to try and buy him and quite a few of the owners retained ownership in him as well. He was always a bit of a quirky colt, but we knew he had good ability.' Trainer Annabel Archibald on Yoshinobu. 'I would never think I was going to end up here so it's amazing.' Swedish-born apprentice Rebecca Bronett Prag after her maiden Saturday city winner. 'He's not one of these million-dollar horses, he's just a home-bred in the back paddock with his owners and it's so wonderful for them and it shows these great racing stories can happen.' Trainer Richard Litt after Romeo's Choice scored. THIS WEEK IN NSW RACING Monday: Bathurst, Moruya Tuesday: Moree, Taree Wednesday: Canterbury Park Thursday: Wyong, Corowa Friday: Lismore Saturday: Royal Randwick, Kembla Grange, Trangie, Inverell Sunday: Muswellbrook, Sapphire Coast

Without Peer lived up to his name with spectacular debut victory at Rosehill Gardens

Without Peer lived up to his name and gave a glimpse of his untapped potential with a perfect debut performance at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. The Ciaron Maher -trained gelding was one of three first starters in the 2YO Handicap (1200m) and made an excellent first impression with a strong finishing burst. Jockey Chad Schofield landed near the rear of the field before making a sustained run down the middle of the track to score. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Without Peer ($11) held off Peter Snowden 's Spice Prawn ($5) to salute with the Joseph Pride -trained Reflect ($14) making up good ground from the back to finish third. 'He is a lovely horse,' Schofield said. 'He is a stylish animal and gave me classy feel when we went to the gates, albeit very raw. 'My instructions were just to let him balance up and travel and I was told he would very strong late. 'When he quickened as well as he did at the top of the straight, I was very confident.' Schofield hadn't ridden Without Peer in either of his trials where the son of Pierata had finished midfield in both hit-outs. The Maher stable didn't initially plan on targeting Saturday's race for his first-up assignment but after seeing the depth of the race, they decided to give him his chance. Without Peer delivered for the stable with a strong debut effort. 'He has done a very good job,' Maher's assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord said. 'He surprised us a bit. He has a lot of talent but is still very raw and we saw that in both of his trials, especially his first one. 'But if you watch his first trial he was very new around the turn and he had to get him off heels late, which is always very promising. 'I don't think this was the deepest two year old Saturday race, which is why he ran today because it wasn't the plan initially. 'We felt 1200m at Rosehill would be a very good starting point.' Without Peer and Harry's Bar the first two winners at Rosehill, Race 3 about to be run on 7! â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 19, 2025 Without Peer was purchased by Triple Crown for $120,000, the same figure they spent on their dual Everest winner Redzel when he was offered at the Gold Coast in 2014. Without Peer was consigned to Inglis' Premier Yearling Sale in Victoria by Ollie Tait's Twin Hills Stud at Cootamundra. A son of Pierata, Without Peer a half-brother to Riduna whose most memorable performances included a fourth to Fangirl in the 2021 Reginald Allen and a close second to Hope In Your Heart in the Group 3 NJC Tibbie Stakes. Whether Without Peer will measure up in the spring remains to be seen but the gelding is set to get his chance to stake a carnival claim. 'It's that time of the year where you have to (push on to the spring),' Gerard-Dubord said. 'He is still furnishing so we will give him some time between runs and he will keep improving. 'That was a bonus today. 'We will get further. He was strong there and having a good look but I think he can go 1200m to 1400m next start and could be a miler in time.' There was drama for the connections of unbeaten Canberra galloper I Show Speed was scratched behind the gates. Alphard Chris Waller -trained colt caught in traffic on the inside before finishing fifth. Stablemate Portofino ($4.20) failed to fire on debut after sitting outside the lead.

The Last Say: Tips, inside mail, market movers for Saturday's racing

Exciting filly Tuileries, last seen when a heavily backed favourite in the 3YO Magic Millions Guineas in January, resumes at Rosehill Gardens today with punters right behind her to make a winning return. The Peter Snowden-trained So You Think filly had to endure a wide barrier in her Magic Millions Guineas tilt where she ultimately finished seventh in the Gold Coast feature. But with two trials under her belt, punters have rallied around Tuileries in race six, a benchmark 78 over 1200 metres, where she is even money despite drawing the extreme outside barrier. King Of Roseau and he has been well supported to take out the final event on the card. The three-year-old Capitalist gelding has had five starts since that Gold Coast appearance including a last start Rosehill success a month ago. He's since had a Randwick trial to bring him up to the mark for today' assignment where punters have firmed him into $4.40 from his midweek quote of $6.50. â– â– â– â– â– ROSEHILL GARDENS Weather: Mostly sunny day and a forecast top temperature of 17c. Canterbury preview: Peter Snowden's faith has been rewarded as a more mature Cassiel shines ahead of midweek target

Trainer Peter Snowden has always known the ability was there and while it has taken time for Cassiel to show it on race day, the gelding has delivered it in spades this preparation. Cassiel placed in three of his four runs last campaign but was his own worst enemy, according to Snowden. With maturity, the four-year-old has been much better this time in, leading all the way to score by more than a length from Apex when resuming at Canterbury on April 21 and backing it up with a two-and-a-half length win from Fly Scotty Fly at Hawkesbury four weeks later in a Benchmark 64 over 1100m with 61kg. 'He just wanted to go too hard and too quick in his races,' Snowden said. 'He is racing a lot more tractably and it is showing in his performances on race day. 'He's probably one of the best trackworkers I've ever had but come race day he just wanted to overdo it and [was] beating himself. 'Now, he is starting to learn to relax a lot better. 'He's not perfect but because he's relaxing more, he's able to find more at the end of his races. 'He will win a lot more races yet if he keeps going the way he is going.' Cassiel races away to salute in the last at Hawkesbury for the @SnowdenRacing1 stable! 🙌 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 17, 2025 Cassiel steps out at Canterbury on Wednesday in the Hyland Race Colours Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m) with Tom Sherry again aboard. 'He's definitely going the right way and you can't beat winning form,' Snowden said. 'It's a similar race for him this week and he looks well placed in that grade.' Lightly-raced three-year-old Braveheart is another who possess nice ability and is getting better with time and maturity. 'He is a full brother to King Of Sparta and there's no reason he can't be up to that grade at some stage,' he said. 'He is very lightly raced – he's only had a handful of starts – but every start he has had, he has shown something. 'He had a few little issues in the early days but we have ironed them out now and he is going very well. 'The family keeps getting better as they get older, there's no doubt about that, and I expect him to do the same. The son of I Am Invincible caught there eye with his strong closing third behind Axius on the Kensington first-up and is a leading chance in the Broadsiding @ Darley Handicap (1250m). Axius is too good for them at Randwick, as he wins first up for @NockBraith and @cmaherracing! 🙌 @aus_turf_club @Dynamic_WONIT — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 25, 2025 • 'He has found the right race this week. His first-up run was very good and a similar sort of race this week should see him run very well again,' he said. 'He worked well on Saturday morning and is ready to go.' Snowden is keeping his options open as to whether Infusion makes her race debut at Canterbury in the TAB Handicap (1200m), goes to Gosford on Thursday or waits until next week. 'I just want to get her on the best track I can,' he said. 'She is more effective on good ground than soft so we will see what happens with the weather.' The three-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible has been good in her barrier trials including a nose second to proven performer Highlights after tracking him in the run in her latest heat at Canterbury on June 23. 'She is a nice filly; a big strong thing,' he said 'She had a few growing pains early and it has taken us a while to get her to the track. 'She has been trialling soundly and it was a very good trial at Canterbury at her last one against good company. She was very strong to the line.'

Peter Snowden unearths spring contender with Raging Force bringing up hat-trick at Rosehill

Raging Force, Sydney's winter two-year-old sprint find, seems destined for stardom after another exciting win at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Champion jockey Tommy Berry is the number one ticketholder in Raging Force's growing fan club after a dominant win in the Thank You ATC Members Handicap (1100m). Berry said the promising young sprinter is simply 'too good' to be racing at this stage of the season. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'Raging Force definitely has stakes potential,' Berry said. 'He is still learning his craft but I loved the way he took that gap in the straight. 'He still has to make more improvement which I think he will. He's improving with every start and you don't see how good they are until they race against the better quality of horses because that brings the best out of them.' Trained by the maestro Peter Snowden, Raging Force was confidently backed into $1.70 favouritism and completed a hat-trick of wins when he scored easily by 2¼ lengths from Horseshoe Hill ($7) with nearly three lengths to Lull ($21) third. Raging Force showed promise at the early season barrier trials but pulled up sore when unplaced on debut in the Breeders Plate. Snowden gave the two-year-old plenty of time to recover and waited until winter to take the gelding back to the races, winning the Red Crown at Muswellbrook first-up, then winning by a big margin at the Kensington midweeks before making the rise to Sydney Saturday grade look routine. 'Raging Force was very good today,' Berry said. 'I was very proud of the way he reacted to the situation that unfolded in the first furlong and a half. 'When he jumped so well I was a bit positive to try and hold that lead but they went quick and I let them cross. 'He got his head up for two or three strides but then came back under me. It just shows his versatility, how 'smart' he is now and how much he is willing to work with us. 'I could have sent him to the line without the stick today but I did that last time and I thought I would help him find the line as he has tougher tasks ahead. 'I still feel he will be better at 1200m and 1400m when he can get into a rhythm, relax, and it is not all 100 miles an hour. He is simply too good for them at the moment.' Raging Force continues the outstanding season of leading syndicator Scott Darby of Darby Racing which has already yielded more than 100 winners including the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes, Group 2 wins in The Ingham, Shannon Stakes, and Ajax Stakes, Group 3 wins in the Sydney Stakes, Brisbane Cup, Sweet Embrace Stakes, Newcastle Stakes, Parramatta Cup, Queen Elizabeth II Cup and Liverpool City Cup, plus a host of Listed races. 'I purchased Raging Force at the Classic Sale for $150,000. We bought him purely on type, he is a lovely horse,' Darby said. 'He will have two weeks off then we will plan a spring campaign for him.' The promising rising three-year-old is a son of Snowden's former crack sprinter Cosmic Force, winner of the 2019 Pago Pago Stakes by seven lengths before finishing unplaced as favourite to Kiamichi in the Golden Slipper. Snowden wasn't on track at Rosehill but his stable representative Aaron Lau confirmed there are plans to set Raging Force for some of the better three-year-old races in spring. 'We're going to tip him out for a couple of weeks. Obviously, the spring isn't far, it will be on our doorstep very shortly,' Lau said. 'We just wanted to get today over and done with and see where he stood. He was up against a few last start winners and Bjorn's horse (Baker, trainer of Horseshoe Hill) goes very well, as does Blake Ryan's, he rates his horse (Just Awesome) as well so it was nice to see Raging Force do it today. 'He's got a great attitude, a lovely, big action and he's probably better on top of the ground as well. He's very progressive and it's exciting going forward.' Raging Force's hat-trick of winter wins means he is 'officially in the black' with nearly $170,000 prizemoney – and the promise of a lot more to come. Berry said Raging Force's improvement from race to race was evident in the first 200m of his Rosehill Win. 'All he wants to do is relax and when he jumped he put his head straight on his chest but I thought we will end up three pairs back on the fence so I had to push him along to hold the lead,' he said. 'Then they wanted to go too quick so I asked him to come back and after a couple of strides he was sweet. 'I stayed about a length and a half back so I had options to go around them if I needed but I could see Regan's horse (Bayliss on Just Awesome) runs around a bit. I thought he is going to give us some room at some point and he did. 'But I think Pete's masterstroke was to take him away to Muswellbrook and then even after that another trip away to Wyong for the trials as education. 'He may have still won those two races anyway but I don't think he would have executed as well today if he had not had those trips away.'
