Savanna Skills hub a milestone for Midvaal development

MIDVAAL – The much-anticipated Skills Development Centre in Savanna City is set to be launched this month. This revelation was made by Midvaal Mayor Peter Teixeira. The centre will play a vital role in upskilling and reskilling young people and the existing workforce. The development is a product of a partnership between Heineken and Midvaal Local Municipality. Speaking recently, Teixeira stated that the construction phase including container installation, fencing and utility connections had been completed. He added that the establishment of the centre had reached final stages. 'An operational partner is on board, and the centre is set to officially launch in July. The centre will support small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with access to information, development tools and artisan training in alignment with the needs expressed through the Integrated Development Plan.' Teixeira said the project had been a long time coming and marked a true milestone for the municipality. 'It took persistent effort, extensive planning, and countless negotiations to finally bring this vision to life. We are committed to seeing our people grow and thrive and this centre will be at the heart of that transformation.' During an announcement about the project, Teixeira highlighted that building a thriving community requires the collective participation of various stakeholders. 'It is imperative that we join forces with private businesses and civil society to make a tangible and lasting impact. By fostering collaboration between industry players, entrepreneurs, and small to medium enterprises, the Skills Development Centre in Savanna City aspires to create employment opportunities and contribute to the overall advancement of the region.' Recently, the municipality in partnership with Heineken Beverages and Ranyaka Community Transformation, hosted the Savanna City Skills Development Centre official open day. MIDVAAL – The 2025 State of the Municipality Address (SoMA) delivered by Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira, under the theme 'Midvaal is home' painted a picture of progress, perseverance, and future ambitions as the municipality approaches the final year of its five-year term. During his delivery, the mayor emphasised the municipality's unwavering commitment to excellence, despite the economic and infrastructure challenges it continues to face. Teixeira beamed with pride as he noted Midvaal's 11th consecutive clean audit, a debt-free record with Eskom and Rand Water, and the numerous accolades received in 2024, including three Golden Awards from and five South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Awards. These achievements highlight culture of good governance and accountability. Despite declining revenue collection and infrastructure challenges, Midvaal has remained committed to community engagement through initiatives such as the Youth Summit, walking with the mayor, and social upliftment programmes including the Spread the Love campaign. The municipality also supports vulnerable residents via social relief packages and property rate rebates. Teixeira stated that public safety remains top priority, with millions invested in surveillance and community policing. 'The Fire Services team reached over 13 000 residents through outreach and safety programs and added a 12 000l tanker to its fleet. The Traffic Department introduced tech-driven law enforcement tools and collaborated with SAPS on crime prevention.' In Midvaal, Infrastructure upgrades continue, with R44 million allocated to roads and stormwater reiterated that major focus for MLM has been economic development, with the formation of the Midvaal Investment and Business Retention Committee. According to Teixeira, notable projects include the R370 million River Stone Mall and the R2 billion Heineken-Soufflet expansion. Victor Antezana, Director of Xportes International hailed Midvaal as an investment hub because of its growth potential. 'Midvaal has the same characteristics as Cape Town which has a booming property market.' He said that he invested his hard-earned money in this municipality which is at the beginning of a growth cycle. He predicted that the municipality is about to have explosive growth. Citing this as the reason for investing his hard-earned money in the municipality. Antezana further said that he was happy that Midvaal is not amongst the municipality's that are said to be crumbling in South Africa. He congratulated the MLM for its continued excellence. Midvaal Municipality shines at Salga audit awards with five prestigious accolades

During the ceremony held over the weekend at the Premier Hotel near the OR Tambo International Airport, the association acknowledged municipalities demonstrating excellence in financial management. The municipality again emerged as a top performer and scooped five prestigious awards recognising its exemplary performance. According to Midvaal spokesperson Idah Satikhe, the event is held annually to recognise and celebrate municipalities for their exemplary financial management and adherence to the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). Next Stay Close ✕ The municipality was honoured for ensuring that accountability, as well as swift consequences for transgressions and poor performance, were ensured for the 2023/24 financial year. Its second award was for submitting quality annual financial statements and annual performance report, with no corrections made during the audit in 2023/24. In addition, the municipality paid service providers within 30 days for the 2023/24 financial year, and in its municipal capital grants service delivery for local municipalities, it achieved a 99.2% spending rate. Midvaal also obtained a clean audit, which highlighted areas for improvement in 2023/24. 'These awards are a testament to Midvaal's commitment to good governance, transparency, accountability, and long-term financial sustainability,' Satikhe said. She added that the municipality will continue to shine as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that good governance is possible and exemplifying what a caring, compassionate and agile institution looks like. At the 2022/23 Salga municipal awards, Midvaal also won the best overall municipality in Gauteng for its performance. Midvaal also had zero debt for Eskom and Rand Water, which also awarded it the Blue Drop Award for 2024. The National Department of Water and Sanitation also honoured Midvaal with a Green Drop for Sanitation Wastewater Treatment, while the Chartered Institute of Government Finance Audit, and Risk Officers gave the municipality its Clean Administration Award for 2024. In July last year, Midvaal received the Best Overall Municipality award based on its incredible performance, which is based on its extensive key performance indicator assessment, which is audited quarterly. Midvaal has also achieved 12 consecutive clean audits from Auditor-General South Africa between the 2013 and 2024 financial years.
