‘I get choked up thinking about it': Calgarian wins $1M on Lotto 6-49

Calgarian Tom Dimitroff says his wife thought he was lying when he told her they won $1 million on Lotto 6-49. Dimitroff says he was 'pretty pleased' when he checked his numbers online and realized he'd won. 'My wife told me she thought I was full of s**t until I showed her the ticket,' he said. Dimitroff says he already knows what to do with his windfall. 'I have a granddaughter with special needs,' he said. 'I'm going to be able to pay for some support for her and set her up with housing.' 'It's wonderful to tell my family that I can take care of them,' he continued. 'I get choked up thinking about it.' Dimitroff purchased his winning Lotto 6-49 ticket at the Petro Canada on Seton Crescent S.E. He won his prize on the July 12 Gold Ball draw with selection 21035885-01, a white ball.

‘We're millionaires:' $1 Encore draw turns into $1M for eastern Ontario resident

Saying yes to a $1 Encore pick paid off for eastern Ontario resident John Dowling. The retiree and father of two from Selby, just north of Napanee, matched all seven Encore numbers in the exact order to win the top prize of $1 million in the May 17 Lotto 6/49 draw. 'When I found out I'd won $1 million, I was shocked!' Dowling said while picking up his winnings at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) Prize Centre in Toronto. Dowling told the OLG he's been playing the lottery for decades, typically playing twice a week. His go-to games are Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Max. The winning ticket was purchased at Petro-Canada on County Road 41 in Napanee. The winning numbers were 7656157. 'The day after the draw, I went to the store to have my ticket validated,' Dowling recalled. 'The cashier scanned my ticket and the lottery terminal froze. I think she was even more excited than I was.' An OLG representative called the store to start the prize claim process. As he was driving home from the store, he saw his wife out for a walk with their dog. 'I lowered my car window and suddenly got overwhelmed — happy tears started streaming down my face. My wife thought something was wrong and came over to me, asking, 'What happened?' I got out of the car, gave her a big hug, and told her, 'We're millionaires,'' he said. He then revealed the news to his two sons. 'When I got home, I asked my son who was there at the time, 'What kind of car do you want?' Then I called my other son and asked him the same question,' Dowling said. Dowling says he plans to share his winnings with his children, buy a new car and invest. Encore offers 22 ways to win and can be played with most lottery games for an extra $1. There are two Encore draws every day. Inverary, Ont. resident wins $100,000 Lottery winner Andy Singh won $100,000 after a lucky Encore draw. (OLG/Provided) A resident of Inverary, Ont., just north of Kingston, took home $100,000 for also saying yes to an Encore draw. Long-time lottery player Andy Singh matched the last six of seven numbers in the exact order in the April 8 Lotto Max draw. 'I went to the gas station to pump gas and purchased a ticket while I was there. That's become a routine for me — buying a ticket when I go for gas,' he told the OLG while visiting the Prize Centre in Toronto to claim his win. About a month after buying his Lotto Max ticket, Singh took a pile of tickets he'd kept in his car to the store to check them. 'I went to the ticket checker and scanned them one by one,' he said. 'When I scanned this one and saw the prize amount on the screen, I was in disbelief. I was so shocked and excited.' Singh says he will pay off bills, invest and take a 'well-deserved' vacation. He also plans to buy a special gift for his wife. 'Being a winner feels unbelievable,' he said. 'You feel like jumping from all the excitement.'

‘It was unbelievable!' Comber resident celebrating 100K lotto win

Tanya Heine of Comber is celebrating after winning a $100,000 top prize with Instant Crossword Tripler. Heine, a nurse and mother, is an occasional lottery player, and prefers playing Crossword and Bingo. 'It's a nice way to wind down after work,' she said. This is Heine's first big win – made all the more special since she won it over the Mother's Day weekend and during National Nursing Week. 'I played my ticket at home and didn't even realize I'd matched six words until I got to the last word,' Heine told OLG officials. 'I thought, 'There's no way,' so I cross-referenced all the words on the ticket multiple times to be sure. It was unbelievable!' With her winnings, Heine plans to share with those in need, 'I believe in putting good into the world … Being a good person is important to me, and that's why I'm a nurse. I'm going to quietly work behind the scenes to brighten people's days.' She also plans to use the winnings to invest, save for her children's education, and treat herself to some shopping. The winning ticket was purchased at Petro-Canada on Manning Road in Maidstone.

Canada Day pride surges as more people chose to celebrate, travel local: stats reveal

As Canada Day approaches, new data from Petro-Canada's Live by the Leaf index: Canada's first ongoing tracker of national pride reveals that patriotic celebrations this year are taking on a deeper meaning. Nearly half of Canadians, 48 per cent, say Canada Day holds more meaning for them in 2025 and that sentiment is influencing how they travel, spend, and celebrate. According to the index, 82 per cent of Canadians are choosing to travel within the country this year, that is up from 75 per cent from last year. Local resorts began reporting a surge in bookings with Resorts of Ontario stating, 'Business is definitely up for our owner-operators and right across the province of Ontario,' said Kerri King, executive director of Resorts of Ontario. 'I think what we're finding is that people really do want to stay and support local.' Last month, at Muskoka Bay Resort staff said they were ahead of last year's pace with an increase in early bookings. 'One of the big things we track is our 'Stay-and-Play' package. It's our most popular package,' said Laura Kiley, director of marketing at Muskoka Bay Resort. 'This year we have double the bookings for the summer as we had this time last year already.' Muskoka Bay Resort Muskoka Bay Resort in Muskoka, Ont. (Supplied) Trips to the states on the other hand, have nearly halved, dropping from 15 per cent to just eight per cent, a 44 per cent decrease in a single year. Meanwhile, 81 per cent of Canadians plan to celebrate Canada Day in their own communities, with top activities including relaxing at home, watching fireworks, and attending local events. In Barrie, the city is preparing for a full day of free, family-friendly events. With the Barrie mayor sharing his pride, 'Canada Day is a special occasion for us in Barrie to come together and celebrate the values that make our city and country strong, such as hard work, freedom, and community,' said Mayor Alex Nuttall. If you too, are looking to stay at home and enjoy the festivities across the region, Centennial Park will be full of traction. It will host food trucks, live entertainment, and a performance by the Ultimutts Animal Actors Show, along with the Moonwalk Entertainment Family Zone on Canada Day. It's hard to keep up,' said Brian Naish, co-owner of Flags Unlimited, to CTV News back in March. The Best Canadian Stocks to Invest $2,000 in Right Now

Written by Jitendra Parashar at The Motley Fool Canada Got $2,000 to invest this month? That should be more than enough to get you started on the TSX today. While a lot of investors think you need tens of thousands to begin with, the truth is, with the right picks, even a small sum of money could go a long way – especially when you follow the Foolish Investing Philosophy with patience. June might feel like a tricky month to invest with markets already at record highs, but there are still many top Canadian stocks with more room to run in the years to come. Let me highlight two of these top stocks you can buy now with an investment of $2,000 and hold for years to come. At current levels, Suncor Energy (TSX:SU) looks like a smart buy if you're thinking long term. This Canadian integrated energy giant produces oil from the oil sands and offshore fields, refines it, and markets fuel through Petro-Canada stations. In addition, Suncor is investing in lower-emission fuels and EV (electric vehicle) infrastructure as it works toward a cleaner energy mix to boost its long-term growth outlook. After surging by 17% over the last two months, SU stock currently trades at $55.99 per share with a market cap of $69.6 billion. SU has a solid annualized dividend yield of 4.1% with quarterly payouts, making it even more attractive for income-focused investors. In the first quarter, the company delivered strong results with its adjusted funds from operations topping the $3 billion mark and free funds flow hitting $1.9 billion. Suncor also returned $1.5 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. For the quarter, energy producer's production averaged 853,000 barrels per day – the highest first-quarter figure in its history. Meanwhile, the company's refining performance was also strong with utilization at 104%. Besides its scale and consistency in cash generation, Suncor's focus on operational reliability and disciplined capital spending makes it a reliable stock to hold for the long term. CAE (TSX:CAE) is another solid pick this month if you want to turn $2,000 into long-term growth. The Saint-Laurent-based firm mainly focuses on providing flight simulators and aviation training services. In the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2025 (ended in March), the company delivered strong financial performance as its revenue jumped 13% YoY (year-over-year) to $1.3 billion, while adjusted earnings climbed nearly four times to $0.47 per share. Similarly, CAE's operating profit touched $239.9 million last quarter, reflecting a big swing from a loss a year ago. The air and defence industry manufacturer generated nearly $290 million in free cash flow, helping reduce its net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) to 2.8 times. Interestingly, CAE delivered 15 full-flight simulators and signed $741.8 million in new training and support contracts in the latest quarter. After climbing by 9% over the last month, CAE stock now trades at $31.42 per share with a market cap of about $10.1 billion. With a record $20.1 billion backlog and growing demand for pilot training globally, CAE looks like a smart bet for patient investors.
