Sagah: Jalan Padawan project on track under new contractor
Sagah confirms that the project, now under new management, is showing positive progress based on updates from the Sarawak JKR. – Photo by Chimon Upon SERIAN (July 11): Phase 1 of the Jalan Padawan upgrading project is progressing smoothly under a newly appointed rescue contractor, said Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. The Tarat assemblyman confirmed that the project, now under new management, is showing positive progress based on updates from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR). 'Based on reports from JKR Sarawak, I believe the project is going on smoothly (under the new contractor),' he said when met after officiating the 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' event at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. However, Sagah noted that weather disruptions have occasionally slowed progress. 'Certain days, the weather doesn't permit us to accelerate the works,' he said, adding that rising public expectations often lead to complaints. He stressed that quality remains a top priority, and the contractor has been given the necessary time to ensure the project meets required standards. Phase 1 of the upgrade covers a 14.9-kilometre stretch from Tapah to Teng Bukap. Jalan Padawan Roland Sagah upgrading project

State Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said the state government will conduct the English-based assessment in partnership with Cambridge University to gauge pupils' understanding of Mathematics and Science taught in English. 'We started teaching Mathematics and Science in English six years ago, and now we've decided to assess our pupils' capabilities. This will be done in collaboration with Cambridge University. 'The results will give us a clearer picture of how well our pupils are doing,' he told reporters after officiating at the 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' event at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. 'If you have children or grandchildren sitting for the UP-DLP, please encourage them to work hard and improve their English proficiency,' he added. On a related matter, Sagah said discussions have yet to begin on the state's planned free tertiary education programme for working Sarawakians. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had, during the state-level Labour Day celebration on May 18, announced that the state government will fund full-time higher education for Sarawakian adults wishing to resume their studies. Eligible courses will be offered at state-owned institutions including Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak, i-CATS University College, and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak. Sagah said his ministry is currently focusing on implementing the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) for school leavers, which will only apply to those enrolled in full-time programmes.

He said social inclusion is a core component of Sarawak's Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to ensure economic benefits reach all levels of society, particularly the B40 group and rural communities. 'The 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' programme today aligns with the objectives of PCDS 2030. 'Organised in partnership between Petronas and the Welfare Department (JKM) Serian Division, the programme reached out to 150 recipients through the distribution of essential food baskets in the Serian district. 'These contributions not only alleviated the burden during the festive season but also brought joy to families celebrating Gawai Dayak,' he said when officiating the programme at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. Each food basket contained cooking oil, glutinous rice, canned goods, condiments, and locally-produced coffee. Petronas Sarawak general manager Norazibah Md Rabu handed over the festive contributions to Serian Division Social Welfare officer Robert Jullong Bengat during the programme. In her speech, Norazibah said the initiative reaffirms Yayasan Petronas' commitment to uplifting marginalised communities. She said the programme was part of Petronas' Community Well-being and Development initiative, aimed at spreading festive joy. 'We believe that everyone deserves happiness, especially when celebrating meaningful occasions such as Gawai,' she said. A total of 750 families across Sarawak have been selected to receive the contributions this Gawai, including 400 households in Miri and Bintulu, she noted. 'It is our hope that these contributions not only lessen the burden of those in need but also kindle the festive spirit of Gawai – filled with gratitude, love and joy,' she said.
