Iraq to Strengthen Public-Private Partnerships in Pharmaceutical Industry
By John Lee.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani has directed the advancement of public-private partnerships in Iraq's pharmaceutical sector, with a particular focus on expanding local production of cancer treatments.
At a high-level meeting on Sunday with the Minister of Health, advisors, private-sector pharmaceutical producers, and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association , the Prime Minister reviewed progress under Iraq's pharmaceutical localisation programme.
The session addressed regulatory frameworks, including initial and final drug registration, quality standards, and ways to align local output with both Iraqi and international benchmarks.
Al-Sudani called on producers to coordinate closely with government stakeholders to resolve production bottlenecks, enhance contract performance with the Ministry of Health, and support legislative adjustments that favour domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Discussions also covered timelines, competitiveness in producing identical drugs, pricing policies, promotional strategies, contract enforcement, and insurance for local manufacturing facilities.
