BMRCL employees' union oppose plan to outsource metro train pilots and operations staff
: The BMRCL Employees' Union has raised objections to a recent move by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to outsource key operational roles, including Metro Train Pilots (MTPs), train operation supervisors, and train operation managers, for the upcoming Reach-5 and Reach-6 lines of Phase II. Speaking to The Hindu, Suryanarayan Murthy, vice-president of the union, said that the BMRCL has floated a tender to contract private firms for the operation of metro train services on these stretches, as well as at the depots. 'This is a government-owned company, and such critical posts should not be handed over to private players. We will oppose this move,' he said. Mr. Murthy warned that outsourcing such essential roles would directly impact BMRCL employees, particularly when it comes to career progression and job security. 'Even though the BMRCL has said that selected candidates will be trained, this still dilutes the importance of in-house staff,' he added. However, a senior BMRCL official clarified that the outsourcing decision has been taken primarily to address the current shortage of trained staff and to ensure that services on the new metro lines can begin on time. 'Chennai and Hyderabad metros have adopted similar outsourcing models, which help bring down operational costs while maintaining efficiency,' the official said. The official added that the move is a temporary measure aimed at meeting operational deadlines and that regular recruitment for permanent staff will continue as planned.

Verastem's avutometinib combination shows 31% ORR in ovarian cancer trial
Verastem Oncology has reported primary analysis data from the two-part multicentre Phase II RAMP 201 trial, demonstrating that avutometinib plus defactinib showed a confirmed overall response rate (ORR) of 31% in treating recurrent low-grade serous ovarian cancer (LGSOC) patients. The analysis was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO). The parallel cohort, adaptive, open-label, randomised study assessed avutometinib alone and in conjunction with defactinib in those with recurrent LGSOC. These patients had undergone a median of three previous therapy lines, including hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, bevacizumab, and MEK inhibitors. Part A of the trial determined the choice of the go-forward regimen, which was the combination therapy against avutometinib alone, based on ORRs. Parts B and C, the trial's expansion phases, assessed the safety and efficacy of the go-forward regimen of 3.2mg of avutometinib bi-weekly, and 200mg of defactinib twice a day. Part D of the trial assessed a low dose of the combination to inform the reduction of the individualised dose. The data published stated that the combination resulted in an ORR of 31% in 109 evaluable subjects in the trial. The response rate was also higher in those with a KRAS mutation, at 44%, compared to 17% in KRAS wild-type patients. The median duration of response (DOR) was reported to be 31.1 months across all subjects, with similar results seen in the KRAS mutant population. Despite this, the KRAS wild-type population had a shorter median DOR of 9.2 months. Median progression-free survival (PFS) was 12.9 months for all subjects, extending to 22 months in the KRAS mutant population and 12.8 months in the KRAS wild-type population. The disease control rate (DCR) at six months or more was 61% in the total population, with a higher rate of 70% in the KRAS-mutated group and 50% in the KRAS wild-type group. Most patients, regardless of KRAS mutation status, experienced some minimisations in target lesions. Last year, Verastem announced the dosing of the first subject with GFH375/VS-7375 as part of a Phase I/II trial in China. Swachh Survekshan Grameen Survey (SSG) in Karnataka's DK from today; focus on rural sanitation progress, officials & villagers urged to cooperate
MANGALURU: The Swachh Survekshan Grameen (SSG) 2025 survey, a nationwide rural sanitation assessment undertaken by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti through the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, will begin in Dakshina Kannada district on July 7. Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr Anandh K has appealed to residents and officials in villages to extend their cooperation to ensure the survey's success. The survey aims to evaluate the progress of villages and districts based on sanitation indicators laid out under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G) Phase II guidelines. It will be carried out in Dakshina Kannada district from Monday. For this exercise, the Central Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has appointed the Academy of Management Studies (AMS), Lucknow, as the survey agency, Dr Anandh said. AMS team members will visit Gram Panchayats to assess sanitation sustainability, focusing on the use of individual and community/public toilets, as well as the management of liquid and solid waste and overall cleanliness. The survey team will inspect Gram Panchayat offices, schools, Anganwadis, public spaces, markets, and bus stops. They will also hold discussions with Gram Panchayat officials, members of Self Help Groups (SHGs), and Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC) members. The team may visit any Gram Panchayat in the district, and all concerned officials and staff are required to be present with complete records and relevant information to assist the team, the CEO added.

Kochi's IT future brightens with mulitple infra projects
Kochi: With several major IT infrastructure projects in the pipeline — including a new project by a private group in Infopark Phase II and the newly inaugurated IT Twin Towers in SmartCity — hopes for Kochi's IT sector are being rekindled. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while inaugurating the Lulu IT Twin Towers on the SmartCity campus on Saturday, announced that the Lulu Group will also set up a new IT tower in Infopark Phase II, Kakkanad. The Rs 500-crore project will come up on 3.5 acres near the Brahmapuram bridge and offer 9.5 lakh square feet of built-up space. The tower is expected to generate at least 7,500 jobs, and the state govt has pledged full support for the venture. Recently, UST Global has started construction of its new campus on 8.5 acres in Infopark Phase II, which is projected to provide direct employment to around 5,000 IT and ITeS professionals. The Lulu Twin Towers itself is expected to create approximately 30,000 jobs. The launch of the Twin Towers is expected to give a revitalize the long-stalled SmartCity development. Further boosting the region's IT ecosystem, industries minister P Rajeeve recently laid the foundation stone for Geojit's IT park in Infopark Phase II. The 16-storey, 1.3 lakh square foot building is scheduled for completion within two years. Additional projects include the World Trade Centre Tower III in Infopark Phase I, a 37-acre TCS campus in Kinfra Park and V-Guard's upcoming IT park, which is nearing completion. Prestige Group's Phase II project is also under consideration in SmartCity, and Infopark's extension campus at the South Metro station is expected to begin operations soon. These developments are set to increase the current IT workforce in Infopark, SmartCity, and nearby campuses from 1 lakh to an estimated 1.5 lakh. Meanwhile, Infopark authorities are awaiting final govt clearance for a proposed third campus spanning 500 acres in Kunnathunadu panchayat. The plan, jointly initiated by Infopark and the GCDA using a land pooling model, is pending approval.

Twin tower boost for Kochi's IT infra
Kochi: Giving a major boost to IT infrastructure in the state, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated LuLu IT Twin Towers on SmartCity campus in Kochi on Saturday. The state-of-the-art complex, developed with an investment of Rs 1,500cr, was unveiled in the presence of ministers, industry leaders and eminent personalities from various walks of life. Located within SmartCity Kochi special economic zone (SEZ), the project is expected to bring leading global companies to SmartCity campus and generate around 30,000 employment opportunities. While inaugurating the project, Vijayan said the state is transitioning into a digitally driven economy and infrastructure projects like LuLu IT Twin Towers are vital in attracting global tech investments and generating employment for our youth. "If we truly seek development, everyone, including govt, private sector and various political and social organizations, must come together in unity," he said. The CM informed that LuLu group will launch another IT tower project with an investment of Rs 500cr on Infopark Phase II campus in Kochi.
