Wrestling fans say 'prayers have been answered' as WWE icon returns home

A WWE legend is set for an emotional homecoming this weekend after almost 12 years. AJ Styles made his name in TNA Wrestling and inspired an entire generation as he changed the business forever in the X-Division. It's been over a decade since he left to wrestle in Japan before joining WWE in 2016, but now he's been all but confirmed for Sunday's Slammiversary event. At the end of last night's TNA show, a vignette played showing a mystery box as flashes of the Phenomenal One's matches appeared on screen. As the box opened, the video showed Styles' wrestling gear with an unseen person blowing the dust off them before the Slammiversary logo appeared on screen. 'Our prayers have been answered,' wrote @SDevilleLive, while fellow fan @jimmyyso bad said: 'AJ Styles coming back is wild. No one did it like him in TNA. Slammiversary just shot up on my must-watch.' And @MCookMrF said: 'TNA needs closure. AJ's departure has been hanging over them for 11 years and finally regaining the soul of the promotion in some capacity is huge. Good for them.' This comes days after TNA Wrestling President Carlos Silva hinted fans should expect a 'phenomenal' night on Sunday. It's not known exactly what Styles will be doing at Slammiversary, but his gear being dusted off certainly seems like a match is on the cards at some point. Before the blatant teases, Silva opened up to Metro about the desire to use major, main roster WWE superstars on TNA events as the partnership continues to blossom. '100% It's all part of the partnership, and how wrestlers, you know, move up, down, sideways,' he admitted. 'We'll continue to do it.' And after 2025 has already seen some incredible moments, including a WWE star winning the TNA Wrestling World Title, it seems anything is possible. ''And you know that everyone at all the different levels are just thinking about, 'What can we do to create great fan experiences?' And I really think that's the thinking there. 'I don't think there's anything off the table… And, and it's nice to see, because so far it's been easy, and so far it's been great. So we're gonna keep it rolling together.' There are reports more main roster stars could be on the way, while Styles looks to have done a U-turn in his own mind after previously dismissing the idea of returning to TNA for a match. More Trending 'I think this would be a good place to end my career, in the WWE,' he told Metro over WrestleMania weekend in Philadelphia back in April 2024. At the time, he insisted any return to TNA would be something that didn't 'involve wrestling', but plans have clearly changed as he nears the end of his career. What's going on with AJ Styles and WWE right now? Last month, following a string of losses it was reported that Styles was still scheduled as a regular on WWE programming going forward. According to Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select), sources close to AJ have informed him that he has signed a one-year extension with the company. AJ Styles Highlights Why Tapping Out In Pro Wrestling Is A Smart Decision

AJ Styles knows it's ok to tap out in the Octagon— or the squared circle. Styles has wrestled a lot of stars throughout his wrestling career. Recently, Styles shared that the Samoa Joe, was one of the best wrestlers he has shared a ring with. Styles reflected on working with Joe in TNA during his appearance at a Fanatics Live Signing at WWE World. 'The Phenomenal One' wrestled Joe countless times over the years, and Styles reflected on one of the contests that saw him tap out to Joe early in his TNA run. Advertisement AJ Styles opened up about the significance of tapping out, which was not as common in pro wrestling as it was in mixed martial arts at the time. Styles mentioned that the competitor who is tapping out is smart, as he does not want to have his arm broken or doesn't want to pass out. AJ Styles explains why tapping out to Samoa Joe was the right choice 'There was a match that we had in TNA. And I remember he choked me out and there was a big thing about, 'Oh you don't wanna tap out to the [new guy coming in]… You know, get choked out.' [I'm like], 'What are you talking about? I don't know if you have heard of the UFC. People tap out all the time,' Styles pointed out. 'Because they are smart and they really don't want to go to sleep. Or they don't want their arm broken.' 'So, in that match, and you know what? [Samoa] Joe was new coming in. And it was an amazing match and it made that match so much better than I was able to tap out. I think, and, the Samoan Submission was one of the best I've ever been in the ring with,' AJ Styles added. AJ Styles and Samoa Joe have wrestled each other on multiple occasions in Ring Of Honor and WWE as well. This also includes another submission decision at WWE Hell In A Cell 2018, which ended in a somewhat controversial fashion. Advertisement Joe, the challenger to Styles' WWE Championship, attempted to lock in the Coquina Clutch and force Styles to submit. Styles countered out of the move and reversed it into a pinning combination. After the match, Joe maintained that Styles had tapped out before a pin attempt. However, the referee counted to three and the decision was made in Styles' favor. Do you agree with AJ Styles about tapping out?
