Vacant Old Sacramento restaurant space along riverfront seeks operator

Sacramento officials are fielding proposals to operate a prominent riverfront restaurant space in the city's historic district. The space is located at 1110 Front Street, the former Rio City Café location. Financial troubles and problems with the city-owned deck were cited as the reason for that restaurant's closing in 2024 after three decades in business. Now, the City of Sacramento is looking for a new operator to take over the space. "This waterfront location is a cornerstone of Old Sacramento, and probably the most unique and high-profile opportunity in all of Northern California," said Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum in a statement. Work is already underway to demolish the existing outdoor deck, city officials say. That work is expected to be mostly completed by fall. City officials say they aren't just open to restaurant concepts taking over the spot. High-quality entertainment, cultural, or performance-based concepts will also be considered. Interested parties need to submit their proposals by Aug. 29 through the City of Sacramento's online bid portal.

Sacramento Railyards protest threatens to derail soccer stadium, delay project for years

A surprise 11th-hour action could lead to yet another stall for the massive Sacramento Railyards development project and the proposed soccer stadium that is slated to go up in it. People who live in the Railyards are protesting the development's new financing plan and the proposed enhanced infrastructure financing district. Some lined up in a show of solidarity, supported by the union Unite Here Local 39, in the council chambers on Tuesday, arguing that more affordable housing is needed in the railyards. There are currently only two residential buildings in the Railyards: The A.J. Apartments and the Wong Senior Center. Both include affordable housing. Of the roughly 250 people who live in them, state law requires that if half protest the formation of the railyards' proposed special tax district, the district can not be created for at least a year. Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum is chair of the Railyards Public Financing Authority. "This is a huge mistake, tremendous," Pluckebaum said. "This is a lose-lose proposition." Sacramento Republic FC's proposed soccer stadium is the highest-profile building that would be impacted by the loss of city financing. "So we lose that soccer stadium, probably the rest of that project gets set back another decade," Pluckebaum said. "And how many decades have we been talking about this?" Pam Freemon is one of the residents who signed the protest. "My passion is that everybody has the same opportunities," Freemon said. A city spokesperson said the clerk's office is verifying the signatures to see how many were submitted and whether the formation of this railyards district must be stopped. They say that the process is expected to take approximately one week.

Swimming school gives new life to Sacramento building with history of vandalism

SACRAMENTO — A new swimming school had its grand opening in a building on Sacramento's Broadway that's been sitting vacant for years and has been the victim of vandalism. An old vacant bank building in the Land Park neighborhood has been converted into a custom-built indoor swimming pool. "It's 25 feet wide by 50 feet long," said Anya Hall, owner of Little Whale Swim School. Hall hopes her new business will help bring a boost to the boulevard. "It's really an important thoroughfare of Sacramento," she said. "A lot of history on this street." Broadway, most famous for being the home of the Tower Theater, is one of Sacramento's oldest commercial corridors. But over the last few years, a number of businesses like Walgreens and Starbucks have closed. The area's also been impacted by crime and homelessness, with some property owners putting up boulders to prevent people from setting up tents. "I think it's important that the city let folks know that Broadway is safe," said City Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum. Pluckebaum represents the neighborhood. "There's still a lot of work to do, but we're very glad to have businesses like this investing in the corridor," he said. Another youth-oriented business, the School of Rock, is also opening along Broadway later this year. People who live nearby are glad to see new shops fill the vacant and boarded-up buildings. "We can now walk or ride bikes here," Land Park resident Brian King said. "We're very, very happy to have this in the neighborhood." The neighborhood is banking on a new business as a way to help this commercial district bounce back. "I'm excited about the potential of bringing Broadway back to life," Hall said. Little Whale Swim School also offers lessons for adults and says they hope to get up to 2,000 students a week.
