Best Pennsylvania public and private golf courses: Oakmont, Merion still top private clubs

Pennsylvania has a wide array of impressive golf courses both public and private. Some have often been considered the best golf courses in the United States and have played host to major championships, such as the US Open at Oakmont this year. Advertisement Golfweek (part of the USA TODAY network) released its 2025 rankings of each state's best public and private golf courses, including the top 10 public courses and top 20 private courses in Pennsylvania. Rankings are determined on a list of 10 criteria with their own 10-point scales. Criteria include routing, variety and memorability of par 3s, 4s and 5s, greens, landscaping, conditioning and a "walk in the park" test. Advertisement Both Oakmont and Omni Bedford Springs retained their titles as the top private and public courses in Pennsylvania from last year's rankings. Oakmont and fellow private course rankings leader Merion East were ranked as the No. 8 and No. 13 best golf courses in the world by The top five private courses in Pennsylvania remained the same as in 2024. Merion East slid into second place behind Oakmont, Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon course was third, Fox Chapel in Pittsburgh was No. 4 and Aronimink in Newtown Square came in at fifth. The top five public courses in the state also remained the same, with some minor changes in the order compared to 2024. Two new courses also made their way into the rankings this year. Penn National's Founders Course slid into a tie for eighth place on the public courses lists, while Sunnehanna in Johnstown came in at No. 18 on the private courses list.
