Animal welfare org calls for donations for pets amid bad weather
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) on Tuesday called for donations for animals affected by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). "The PAWS team has been working tirelessly to repack and distribute hundreds of relief goods for animals and their owners affected by the ongoing storms," the gorup said in a statement. "To most quickly provide support, we've been taking from our shelter's own available supply, but now, we urgently need your help to sustain our Disaster Relief Operations." For in-kind donations, PAWS said the following items are needed: Canned goods for humans Rice Old towels Dog and cat food (canned/kibble) Collapsible cages and crates Donations may be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center, Aurora Blvd. cor. Katipunan Ave., Loyola Heights, Quezon City. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Asia (PETA) earlier urged the public to include animals in disaster plans during typhoon seasons. According to PAGASA's 5 p.m. bulletin, Tropical Depression Dante may become a tropical storm on Wednesday. Dante was located 1,115 km east northeast of Central Luzon or 1,130 km east of Northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

Andrea Torres, Thea Tolentino, Arra San Agustin bond with rescued animals at PAWS
Andrea Torres, Thea Tolentino, and Arra San Agustin recently volunteered for the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) where they visited and bonded with rescued animals. On Instagram, the Sparkle stars shared about what they learned from the meaningful activity. They also posted snaps of themselves interacting with PAWS' cats, dogs, and resident turtle, learning about the shelter's facilities, and preparing the animals' meals. According to Andrea, PAWS currently has 163 cats and 70 dogs under its care. In its facility, there are playgrounds for the animals to explore, as well as quarantine zones and designated spaces for animals who need extra care, such those with medical issues. She also encouraged her followers to volunteer and consider adopting rescues if they can. "It feels so good to help out. You'll also learn a lot about responsible pet ownership, and what to do if you ever come across an abandoned dog or cat. These animals deserve all the love in the world," she said. Thea, for her part, shared that some of the animals under PAWS' care have "trauma from bad experiences with humans." "Sa totoo lang, we can co-exist with these babies. People just need to learn how to respect and care for them. Kung ayaw niyo sa kanila, wag niyo na lang saktan please," she wrote. Arra also called their visit to PAWS the "most heartwarming experience," noting that each animal there has their own story. Filipinos outraged over dog shot with arrows, call for law with ‘stronger fangs'
The plight of a dog in the Philippines that was shot with multiple arrows has triggered widespread outrage, with animal rights activists and politicians condemning the case of animal abuse and calling for stricter penalties against offenders. Advertisement Leah Dela Cruz, the dog's owner, said on Monday that she was horrified to find her badly injured pet named Tiktok with the arrows embedded in its body in a town in Murcia municipality. The dog is recovering at an animal clinic and requires therapy to regain mobility in its left leg, according to Aaron Pabalan, a veterinarian who examined Tiktok. Local officials and animal rights activists have offered a US$5,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has condemned the act of cruelty, with its Executive Director Anna Cabrera saying PAWS was ready to help file a criminal case over the incident. Advertisement Cabrera said in a statement that PAWS had reached out to the Bacolod Animal Chance and Hope (BACH) Project PH, the rescuer of the injured dog.
