Plano's Jason Phillips pulls double duty as shortstop and pitcher. His all-star approach? ‘Work two times harder.'
Uncommitted heading into his senior year, Plano's Jason Phillips knows he has to work extra hard to get his name out there. Playing at a smaller high school presents some challenges in that regard, but the shortstop/pitcher is doing his best to increase his visibility this summer. Playing in the Double Duty Classic at the Chicago White Sox's Rate Field was a step in that direction. 'Really all you need is an opportunity,' Phillips said. 'If you perform out there, that opens the way to plenty more opportunities. I think events like this definitely help. 'I love where I'm from. I just have to work two times harder.' Phillips impressed both on the mound and with a sharp single at the plate. Walking into a professional stadium for the first time as a player left a profound impact on Phillips. 'I've never played on a field like this before,' Phillips said. 'Just walking into the dugout was surreal. Walking into the clubhouse and seeing your name on the plate, putting on the jersey, it was surreal.' The nature of the event itself, which was being hosted to honor the old East-West Negro League games that were held at Comiskey Park, also wasn't lost on Phillips. The game was filled with Black players, which resonates with Phillips. Look no further than the number he wears for the Reapers, the same one made famous by Jackie Robinson. 'Having that experience is important to him,' said former Plano coach Nate Hill, who is taking over as the Reapers' athletic director this year. 'He's sporting No. 42 for us, so it's definitely something he doesn't take lightly.' Perhaps more importantly, there were dozens of college coaches and professional scouts on hand at Rate Field as well. He's still patiently trying to find a college destination. 'I'm just trying to go out there and have fun,' Phillips said. 'When I play my best, hopefully somebody sees that and that's where I end up. I try not to put too much pressure on myself.' What the scouts are seeing is a transformed player. Already a fearsome hitter at 6-foot-1, 226 pounds, Phillips took a massive jump this season with his athleticism. The statistic that stands out, however, is a program-record seven triples. He never hit a triple in his career before this season. 'Becoming a full player is going to pay off for him,' Hill said. 'He dropped over 30 pounds, and it really showed this spring. He was super athletic. His bat spoke for himself. 'He played shortstop for us, and he played a fantastic shortstop.' Oswego's Kamrin Jenkins is one of Phillips' closest friends. They're also travel teammates at Top Tier West, and Jenkins was Phillips' teammate at the Double Duty Classic. Jenkins has seen Phillips' transformation firsthand. 'He's like my brother,' Jenkins said. 'This past year and a half has been crucial for him. He was in the weight room. He was telling me how he was doing cardio and eating better. 'He looks like a real ballplayer now.' Hill hopes all of that translates to an opportunity for Phillips to play at a high level in college. 'He wants to put himself on the map,' Hill said. 'When I met with him coming into his freshman year, this was the ideal path and track that he and his family were on. 'Being able to see him step into that is huge. To be back-to-back all-state is huge. The success he's had has spoken for itself.' That support is another crucial part of Phillips' development. 'Sometimes, confidence can be a thing you struggle with, definitely with me too,' Phillips said. 'Being around people that believe in me and believe that I can do good things means a lot.'

Jacksonville man convicted of murdering 8-year-old girl fighting for life sentence review
would Action News Jax has been following the case since Clifton was first found dead in 1998. The case has gained national attention, in part, because of its nature. Clifton's body had been found beaten and stabbed in Phillips' waterbed. He was 14 years old at the time and was sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole. Phillips made his first appearance inside a Duval County courtroom on Monday since 2017. During a hearing where the judge was expected to set a date to review his sentence, his recently appointed lawyers asked for at least a few months' time in preparing a case to argue for Phillips to receive a new sentence. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< The case they're expected to make is Phillips' age both when he committed the murder and when he was first convicted. Criminal defense attorney Chris Carson says the Florida Supreme Court has ruled against minors receiving a life sentence since Phillips' conviction. 'If someone was under the age of 18, there had to be some manner of opportunity for that person to seek recourse,' Carson said. Phillips and his lawyers had made this argument in Duval County court back in 2017, but he was resentenced to life in prison after the court rejected it. Court records show another attempt by his lawyers to have his sentence reviewed in 2020, but the Florida Supreme Court denied it. Carson tells Action News Jax he doesn't expect Phillips' sentence to change because of the nature of the murder and the attention it has received. 'The technical reality is he has to be given an opportunity to present that evidence,' said Carson, 'the practical reality is it would take some very compelling evidence for a judge to modify the sentence at this point.' Whatever case Phillips' lawyers decide to make, Carson said it could take months for them to build it. 'There can be things that involve, you know, psychologists, psychiatrists, even medical doctors. So, depending on the nature of the mitigation, that's going to dictate the timeline,' Carson said. The judge ordered that the next day, this case would go to court on July 8th. We're expecting to hear an update from Phillips' lawyers on where they are in building their case for a sentence review. Celtic flop 'expected' to leave EPL club as ex-winger is released
The central defender joined the Parkhead outfit in the summer of 2023 on an initial six-month loan. Phillips' tenure in Glasgow's east end ultimately didn't go to plan, as he played just eight times in all competitions. Read more: The 28-year-old promptly returned to Anfield, although he is now expected to leave Liverpool this summer, claims The Athletic. Phillips spent last season on loan at Derby County in the English Championship, although it remains to be seen where he may end up come the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign. News of his potential exit comes shortly after ex-Celtic winger Gary Mackay-Steven was released by Kilmarnock. The Rugby Park club recently provided a squad update following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season. Mackay-Steven was named as one of 15 players whose contracts are expiring and are set to depart. The wide man played 62 times in the green and white of Celtic in a two-and-a-half-year spell at the club after joining, alongside Stuart Armstrong, from Dundee United in 2015. Elsewhere, Rennes are said to have held positive talks with Brentford over the sale of Kyogo Furuhashi. It was reported earlier this month that Kyogo is 'expected' to leave the French club, with Bournemouth interested in finding out the terms of a potential transfer. Now, a new team from England's top flight has emerged in the race in the form of Brentford. Indeed, reports from Le Parisien [via RecordSport] claim that Rennes have held 'positive' talks with the London club regarding a potential deal. Thomas Frank's side finished 10th in the Premier League last season.

Former teacher in Grimsby barred from profession after 'sexual activity with pupil'
A former teacher has been barred from teaching ever again after a disciplinary panel found he had sexual relations with a pupil and sent inappropriate messages and photos to another. A Teaching Regulation Agency professional conduct panel has issued an order to ban Cheyne Phillips, 34, who taught at Healing Academy near Grimsby between 2016 and 2022, from teaching indefinitely. Findings included that Mr Phillips fell significantly short of professional standards, sent comments of a sexual or inappropriate nature, and had sexual relations with one pupil. One message Mr Phillips is alleged to have sent to one of the pupils, highlighted by the panel for its inappropriate nature, said: "Times ticking baby cakes [emoji] u either want ur eyes to water or you don't [emoji].' The Harbour Learning Trust, which runs the school says the incident was dealt with swiftly under a previous headteacher and chief executive officer, and it complied fully with the investigation. The Teaching Regulation Agency panel viewed the misconduct findings as particularly serious as they "include a finding of sexual activity, sexual communication with a child and activity involving viewing and possessing indecent photographs of a child". Both pupils reported Mr Phillips' behaviour towards them changed as they entered the last months of their time at school. Screenshots showed Instagram messages between Mr Phillips and one of the pupils, including him sending one which read: 'Is this the part where I get lucky and get a few pics and videos? [emojis].' Messages with the other pupil were alleged to have occurred by Snapchat, a social media app where screenshotting notifies the other person of this action. Consequently, the pupil copied and pasted messages sent by Mr Phillips, such as 'Times ticking baby cakes'. The panel found Mr Phillips was sexually motivated in pursuing entirely inappropriate lines of communication with both pupils. It was found on the balance of probabilities he had sexual relations with one pupil on one or more occasions, and received one or more explicit photographs of the pupil. This pupil stated in her evidence that Mr Phillips would request explicit images. This was not a finding of fact made by the panel, but it did find Mr Phillips requested pictures from the other pupil. There was no doubt from the panel that both pupils had been harmed and Mr Phillips' actions "were having a serious and continued effect" on them. The teaching ban will last for life, unless it is appealed at High Court within 28 days of the order's issuing. Mr Phillips chose not to attend the hearing as he did not feel in a position to properly respond to the allegations, the panel heard. But in a written statement, he had denied the allegations and a large amount of the factual assertions surrounding them. He also stated regardless of the outcome, he did not wish, or intend, to return to teaching. In a statement, Harbour Learning Trust, which runs Healing Academy, said it is :committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all of our students and expects all our staff to share this unwavering commitment". It continued: "We wish to make it unequivocally clear that the behaviours attributed to this individual do not align with the values, professional standards, or expectations held by our Trust. "We are deeply committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and nurturing environment for all students, and any actions that undermine this commitment are viewed with the utmost seriousness. "We can confirm that this incident was dealt with swiftly by the Trust, under the previous CEO and Headteacher, and the school and Trust have complied fully with the investigation. "Harbour Learning Trust do not condone behaviour that compromises the well-being, trust, or safety of our students in any way. Our primary concern remains the protection and education of the young people in our care."
