Editor's note: This story has been updated to indicate the correct rank of the deputy killed, after the Sedgwick County Sheriff's office corrected its news release. PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. (KSNW) — A Kansas deputy and a suspect were both killed in a shooting Friday night in Phillipsburg. It happened around 9:30 p.m. at a home near 1st and E Street. Authorities say Phillips County Deputy Brandon Gaede was responding to a report of illegal fireworks and tried to arrest 27-year-old Colton Griffith. During the arrest, Griffith pulled a gun and shot Gaede. The deputy returned fire, killing Griffith at the scene. Gaede was taken to a hospital but died shortly after. One hurt in downtown Wichita shooting The Kansas Bureau of Investigation asked the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office to lead the independent investigation into the shooting. Detectives are reviewing witness accounts, medical reports, and physical evidence as they work to piece together the full timeline of events. The findings will be turned over to the Phillips County Attorney once the investigation is complete. A social media post from the Phillips County Sheriff's Office in July of 2024 said Brandon Gaede was promoted from Sergeant to Undersheriff, but he was again serving as a deputy at the time of his death. Gaede is reportedly survived by his wife and three children. Multiple law enforcement agencies shared condolences online, including departments from Garden City, Maize, Pottawatomie County, and others. In a statement, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office called Gaede 'a devoted public servant, friend, and beloved family member' who gave his life in the line of duty while protecting the Phillipsburg community. On Saturday afternoon, local law enforcement lined the nearby streets and gathered at the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center to honor Deputy Brandon Gaede as his body arrived. 'As you saw in the procession, nearly every single municipality within Sedgwick County came together to honor this deputy,' said Deputy Branden Stitt, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office. 'Even if you are fallen, you'll never be forgotten,' said Chief Joe Sullivan, Wichita Police Department. 'And this is just the very beginning of the support that this family, who is obviously devastated right now, will receive from law enforcement. It will not end with the funeral. It will continue forever.' To help support the family, Sedgwick County FOP Lodge #74 created a GoFundMe page. The Phillips County Sheriff says donations can be brought to The Farmer's State Bank in Phillipsburg or given to Karlye Gaede's Venmo account by clicking here. For more Kansas news, click here. First responders honor fallen Phillipsburg deputy; convoy brings him home
PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. (KSNW) – First responders escorted Phillips County Deputy Brandon Gaede for the hours-long procession from Wichita to Phillipsburg on Tuesday. KSN spoke with those who have a first-hand look at the sacrifice of being a public servant. All say he will never be forgotten. A somber scene in Wichita as Gaede was escorted back to Phillipsburg, a journey of over 200 miles and escorted by multiple agencies. 'It's a partnership between all first responders. The Highway Patrol is just one of many agencies helping with this moment. And it's just it creates pride, I think, for everybody involved,' Kansas Highway Patrol Technical Trooper Ben Gardner said. A sea of first responders, including police officers, deputies, troopers, paramedics, and firefighters, lined the highway, paying their respects and reflecting on public service. 'It brings back to reality that this is what can happen in this profession, unfortunately. And so I would think that they're thinking that themselves and how to have those kind of difficult conversations with their own family,' Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said. Easter also said that this day prompted the community to show up for Gaede, his wife and three kids. 'They've got a lot of decisions to make and a lot of time away from their dad at this point until they can get to the age of being able to support themselves. And so that's going to take a community commitment,' he said. First responders also said that Gaede was a dedicated member of the service. He gave everything he had for his community. 'Brotherhood and sisterhood in all that we do. And we want to show support. We want to be there for everybody that tragically loses their life,' Sedgwick County Fire District 1 Deputy Chief Ray Hensley said. Why flags in Kansas will fly half-staff on Saturday, July 5 The Phillips County sheriff, Kyle Pinkerton, says Gaede was a gifted listener and did his best to de-escalate in any situation in a civil or criminal context. Pinkerton recalled having him on as a trainee years ago. 'When I took over, he was the first person I trained, Brandon was. And he drove around with me for about two months until he took on his own. He's crafted his own career from there, he's jumped up, and this man had a large future in front of him. And now it's gone,' he said. A GoFundMe has been set up for Gaede's wife and three children. Donations are also being accepted through Venmo and The Farmer's State Bank in Phillipsburg. Pinkerton says the Phillips County Sheriff's Office is in the process of setting up its own fundraising initiative for Gaede's family. Deputy Gaede will be remembered during the funeral scheduled on Saturday. The memorial will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Huck Boyd Community Center, 860 Park Street, Phillipsburg. The service will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. Burial will follow in Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, 576 W. Osage Road, Stuttgart. For members of the public attending funeral services, parking will be available at Phillipsburg High School, located at 410 S. 7th Street. Buses will be available to transport attendees to the Huck Boyd Community Center. Parking for first responders will be available along Park Street near the community center. PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. (KSNW) – From Wichita to Phillipsburg, a powerful and emotional tribute unfolded across nearly 240 miles of Kansas highways on Tuesday, as people lined overpasses, main streets, and intersections to honor Phillips County Deputy Brandon Gaede. But in Phillipsburg, the hometown of the fallen deputy, the reaction was especially profound. Outside the sheriff's office, a patrol cruiser now stands adorned with dozens of flower arrangements and respect from a community reeling from loss. 'He always smiled. He would wave at you when you went down the street,' said Phillipsburg resident Donna Erhart. Hundreds gathered downtown as Gaede's body was returned home. First responders honor fallen Phillipsburg deputy; convoy brings him home 'When we brought Brandon here, it was rough, I mean, cause it was, the amount of people out there was all you saw was people,' Pinkerton said. 'He rode around with me for about two months until he took on his own, and he's crafted his own career from there.' His death leaves Pinkerton at a loss. 'I do not know if there is a word strong enough to describe the emotion we're feeling and the support that's been pouring in.' Businesses across Phillipsburg have stepped up, including Get Scooped, an ice cream shop. 'It's a tragedy for all of Phillipsburg,' said co-owner Janice Sheid. 'But Brandon had a wife and three small children.' Sheid and her team donated half their sales on Saturday to Gaede's family. 'Not just customers, but people who didn't even buy ice cream came in just to donate to the family,' she said. 'We also had a donation jar set up here.' An overwhelming reaction from across the state, the nation, and most of all Bradon's hometown. 'One of our own is lost. It's bringing the community together,' Pinkerton said. 'We're really trying to heal together right now. We're still grieving.' Jurassic Art: Rose Hill resident builds dinosaurs out of metal A GoFundMe has been set up for Gaede's wife and three children. PHILLIPSBURG, Kansas (AP) — A sheriff's deputy in Kansas responding to a call about fireworks died after being shot by a man who was then killed by the fatally wounded deputy, authorities said. Phillips County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brandon Gaede, 30, was pronounced dead at a hospital about an hour after the shooting Friday evening in Phillipsburg, the sheriff's office said. The city of about 2,000 people is near the state's border with Nebraska. The sheriff's office said Gaede was responding to a call about illegal, non-consumer-grade fireworks being detonated at a home in the city when he made contact with Kolton Griffith, a resident at the home believed to be responsible for the fireworks. When Gaede tried to place Griffith in handcuffs after developing probable cause to arrest him, a struggle broke out and Griffith pulled out a handgun that had been concealed and shot Gaede, the sheriff's office said. Despite being struck by gunfire, Gaede returned fire, hitting Griffith multiple times, the sheriff's office said. Griffith died at the scene. The shooting will be investigated by the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.
