Naturists go barefooted for Umhlanga Lagoon clean up
THE KZN Naturist Association (KZNNA) is calling on nature lovers, families, and concerned citizens to join hands for a beach clean-up at Umhlanga Lagoon on Sunday, June 29.
Dubbed the 'Barefoot' Beach Clean-up Day, the initiative is open to the public and aims to restore the scenic shoreline to its former glory. While not a naturist event, the clean-up reflects the core values of the association: respect for nature, mindful living, and community action.
Umhlanga Lagoon Beach, long enjoyed by joggers, walkers, and naturists alike, has quietly served as a haven for those seeking peace and connection with nature.

Like many coastal areas, the lagoon hasn't escaped environmental damage. Chemical spills, sewage leaks, and general neglect, especially during the Covid-19 lockdowns, left the area in a degraded state. Since then, nature slowly began to heal, aided by powerful tides and the tireless work of local organisations.
Groups like the Umhlanga Improvement Project and The Litterboom Project have been instrumental in restoring parts of the lagoon. Their efforts have now inspired KZNNA to get involved.
'We've enjoyed the beach for years. Now it's our turn to give back. This is more than just picking up litter, it's a symbolic act of stewardship and gratitude,' said Phlip Volschenk, chairman of KZNNA.
