Phoenix officer has minor injuries after being assaulted in an alley, police say
A Phoenix police officer was injured after responding to a large gathering, a spokesperson said. Around 10 p.m. July 5, police were called out for reports of criminal damage in a neighborhood near 35th Avenue and Cactus Road, according to Lorraine Fernandez, spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department. Arriving officers made contact with a large group of adult men and teens in an alley, where a man resisted commands of police and assaulted an officer, prompting an underage male to intervene and also attack, Fernandez said. Another police officer used pepper spray to stop the fight, said Fernandez. The assaulted officer sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene by the Phoenix Fire Department, according to Fernandez. More police arrived and witnessed the group walking from the alley back into a residence, Fernandez said. Police organized a containment, and eventually, 20 people exited the home, according to Fernandez. The teen attacker was taken to the hospital but was later booked along with the adult attacker for aggravated assault on a police officer. Both of them remained unidentified. An unidentified adult woman was also treated by the Phoenix Fire Department and taken to the hospital for a medical condition, Fernandez said. The incident remained under investigation. Phoenix mobile home fire burns 5 units, leaving over 30 residents displaced
More than 30 people were without a home after a fire burned through five mobile homes in west Phoenix, fire officials said. Around 4 p.m. June 22, Phoenix firefighters were sent to a residential area near 43rd Avenue and Van Buren Street where "multiple" mobile homes were on fire, according to Capt. Todd Keller, spokesperson for the Phoenix Fire Department. Flames from the first alarm fire made its way outside the homes, spreading to other units, as crews maintained a position around the blaze, successfully containing it, Keller said. Downed power lines were treated by firefighters, Keller said. There was a power outage in the area, impacting about 60 Salt River Project customers near 41st Avenue and Van Buren Street, as of 6:20 p.m. A total of 33 people across five mobile homes were displaced as a result of the fire, according to Keller. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported, Keller said. The cause of the fire remained under investigation by the Phoenix Fire Investigations Task Force. Cause of 25-acre fire in North Mountain Park in Phoenix under investigation
The Phoenix Fire Department is investigating the cause of a brush fire that charred 25 acres of land on June 17 at North Mountain Park near a condominium complex. About 125 firefighters from multiple fire departments battled the blaze for several hours in the triple-digit heat, said Scott Douglas, a captain with the Phoenix Fire Department. Firefighters were called to the fire around noon and found the fire moving up the west side of Shaw Butte about 500 feet from a condominium complex, Douglas said. The condominiums are located on West Sunnyside Drive near 19th Avenue in north Phoenix. The condominium complex was not threatened, and there were no injuries, Douglas said. The fire did not affect several radio and TV antennas on top of Shaw Butte, he said. High winds, excessive heat, low humidity and mountainous terrain made it difficult for fire crews to battle the blaze, Douglas said. Because of the excessive heat, firefighters rotated every 30 minutes to rest and rehydrate and have their vital signs checked, Douglas said. The fire was reported just before noon and was extinguished by about 3 p.m., Douglas said. Lisa Brandt, who lives in the Villas of North Mountain Condominiums, said she went outside to walk her dog at about 12:30 p.m. and saw fire trucks lining Sunnyside Drive. She then saw smoke and flames coming from the side of Shaw Butte, a popular hiking area, not far from the buildings. "There was a lot of smoke and flames," Brandt said. Brandt was worried residents would have to evacuate. But fire officials told her the buildings were not threatened. "I was ready to pack my bag and go," Brandt said. Dead body found in the middle of a lake at Cesar Chavez Park in south Phoenix, police say
Phoenix police said detectives were investigating a dead body found in a lake at Cesar Chavez Park. At about 8:11 a.m. May 25, a witness reported a person floating in the middle of the lake at the park located near 35th Avenue and Baseline Road in south Phoenix, according to Sgt. Brian Bower in a statement. Both police and technical rescue team members from the Phoenix Fire Department arrived on scene. Detectives were investigating what led up to the body's discovery in the lake, Bower said. The Phoenix Fire Department referred questions about the body to Phoenix police. An identity of the deceased was not immediately provided. "It is still very early into this investigation," said Bower. This is a developing story, check back to for more details. Single-car crash leaves 3 people in critical condition
The Brief Three people were taken to a hospital after a single car crash off Anthem Way. Two people were ejected from the car in the crash and one person had to be extricated. PHOENIX - Two people were ejected from a vehicle and one person had to be extricated after a crash on 46th Drive and Anthem Way on May 23. Two adult females and one man were all taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. One woman was further identified as an 18-year-old. Dig deeper According to the Phoenix Fire Department, the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. and involved just one car that slammed into a wall.
