Main Reef Road shooting: New information emerges
Police have confirmed that the fatal shooting of Phumelele Jikwayo and the critical injury of his wife, on Main Reef Road near the Angelo informal settlement on June 5, is no longer being investigated as a hijacking.
According to Captain Nelda Sekgobela, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni SAPS district, the case has now been reclassified as murder, attempted murder, and theft of a motor vehicle based on new evidence.
'Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspects who shot the couple did not take the vehicle. Instead, they took the victims' cellphones before fleeing the scene. The bakkie was later taken by different individuals after the shooting had occurred,' said Sekgobela.
The incident unfolded when the couple's white Toyota Hilux was rear-ended by another vehicle near a shop in the early hours of the morning. Jikwayo exited his vehicle and called a relative to explain the delay. Moments later, gunshots were heard during the call.
Police found Jikwayo fatally wounded on the roadside. His wife, who had been shot multiple times, was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
The vehicle was discovered abandoned in the nearby informal settlement.
Investigators are continuing to follow leads in both the shooting and the subsequent theft of the vehicle. Police are calling on any members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or who have relevant information to come forward.
