Time allows winemakers to further hone their craft

Rockburn winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis. Photo: supplied In my view, one of the strengths of the Central Otago wine scene has been the longevity of involvement of so many of its winemakers. Time has allowed them to hone their craft as they seek incremental improvements through a deeper understanding of the fruit that Central Otago produces, while also nurturing the bounty of ever-increasing vine age. A quick head count of winemakers that have completed 20 vintages easily surpassed double figures and I'm certain there are others who are either on the cusp or have already surpassed that mark. A small handful have gone past 25 vintages, while the redoubtable Alan Brady's involvement just goes on and on. The arrival of a group of wines from Rockburn recently reminded me that the 2025 vintage saw their winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis join that merry band in the 20+ club. Congratulations Malcolm on the achievement. New wine bars in Dunedin Having had Piccolo wine bar open in St Clair recently, a heads-up for wine enthusiasts that a new wine bar opened its doors over Matariki weekend. "The Cellar" is situated at 4 Hanover St and is opening Thursdays to Sundays from afternoon till late. Run by Colin and Jackie, this is a welcome addition to the Dunedin wine scene. Science festival wine events I spotted this late in the piece but the NZ International Science Festival (NZISF) has events for grown-ups too this week. Two that caught my eye are Sonic Sommellerie: A Multisensory Wine Odyssey — "a journey through the senses with Dr Jo Burzynska, discovering how different sounds and environments can change the taste of wine". Also: Getting the Measure of Alcohol — "what is alcohol and how and why do we measure it?" Held at Vault 21 and Dunedin Craft Distillers respectively, you'll find all the details on the NZISF website. Decanter World Wine Awards Results are just out and Central Otago secured gold medals for the 2024 McArthur Ridge Falls Dam Pinot Gris, the 2022 Te Kano Northburn Pinot Noir and the NV Mumm Blanc de Noirs. The 2023 McArthur Ridge Southern Tor Pinot Noir secured a Platinum award but is now sold out domestically. The NZ Best in Show Pinot Noir Award went to the 2024 Craggy Range Martinborough Pinot Noir. 2023 Rockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir RRP $49 Price Rating Excellent Sweetly perfumed, contrasted by a dusty/lead pencil quality, savoury notes join the mix, flecks of herb, a leafy/snow-pea-like aspect. Ripe, generous, fills the mouth, has central Otago classicism writ large on it. Bright acidity gives freshness, now dark cherry. There's crowd pleasing sheer drinkability yet complexity and depth for added interest. 2023 Rockburn Seven Barrels Dick Bunton Vineyard Gibbston Pinot Noir RRP $99 Price Rating Outstanding A sense of elegance and refinement, swelling in the glass. Cherry, cranberry, a gently savoury undercurrent backed by schist aspects. Lovely tension, not at all showy, but built on elegance and structure. A sense of ethereality, a lighter frame but far from underpowered, you have to come to this but it rewards you. The nose really grows with air, wonderful precision and linearity. 2023 Rockburn Eleven Barrels Parkburn Vineyard Gibbston Pinot Noir RRP $99 Price Rating Excellent to Outstanding Herbal influences, flashes of mint and eucalypt appear for a moment, subtlety, refinement, perfume grows, sweet fruit, toast/pencil shavings, biscuity aspects. Flavour depth clear to see, ripe yet dry, oak seasoning, it becomes clearer that this is a bigger boy than first thought, the tannins show their mettle, richly fruited, earthy humus, dusty characters, the power evident now.

Southern-Leaning American Bistro Cannonball Dives Into South Pasadena

One of northeast Los Angeles's most charming neighborhoods, South Pasadena, welcomed Cannonball on May 2, a new restaurant from Hippo chef Matt Molina and operating partner Joe Capella. The sprawling multi-floor space, previously occupied by Piccolo, has original brick walls, an extensive vintage wine list, cocktails, and farmers-market-derived seasonal produce. It's potentially the most exciting new restaurant to open in the area in a few years (its most recent was 2023's debut of Katsu Jin on Fair Oaks). With Molina and Capella steering the ship, South Pasadena has a grown-up restaurant for drinks and classic American dishes, coupled with reasonable prices. Molina, who won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Pacific of 2012 for his work at Osteria Mozza, has had a strong run with Capella at Arts District's Everson Royce Bar (opened in 2015), which is also co-founded and co-owned by Randy Clement and April Langford (Good Neighbor Bar, Silver Lake Wine). The foursome opened Hippo in Highland Park and Triple Beam alongside Nancy Silverton in 2018, cementing their place in northeast LA's dining scene. Molina's relationships with farmers at the South Pasadena Farmers Market, a main source for Hippo's produce, led him and Capella to check out the former Piccolo. The former Venice-based Italian restaurant had expanded to Mission Street in 2022 but closed just a year later in spring 2023 (it still operates in Santa Monica). Cannonball is Capella and Molina's first collaboration, opened without involvement from Clement, Langford, and Silverton. 'Hippo was in a good spot and we wanted to do something in this neighborhood [South Pasadena,' says Molina. 'I grew up in SGV and first heard about it when our friend Steven Arroyo opened something here. He was always ahead of the game. It's so charming here, but a lot of people in Northeast LA don't know about it, or the farmers market.' After a career spent in Hollywood and Mid-City at Osteria Mozza and Campanile, Molina has become acclimated to this part of town. Molina sees a similarity to New York City restaurateurs [like Gabe Stulman], who open multiple concepts in a particular neighborhood to serve a similar audience. Like Everson Royce Bar, Molina anchors the menu with his signature flaky biscuits with honey butter and a single-patty burger made with ground chuck and Tillamook cheddar. Starters include shaved celery salad with medjool dates, roasted carrots with cumin vinaigrette, and fideos with clams, chorizo, and saffron. Most starters range $12 to $24, bucking the trend of inflationary prices that seem to affect most new LA restaurants. A short list of six mains includes the burger with fries for $23, and extends to barbecue pork loin with Anson Mills polenta, grilled prawns, or grilled New York steak with pommes aligot. An olive cake with a side of crème fraiche is the sole dessert. Molina says the menu will not feature pasta during its opening phase, but he might add some in the future. Beverages at Cannonball are another strong suit, with Joe Capella's extensive wine and spirits knowledge on full display. Capella priced the wines to drink now (he would like the entire inventory to turn over every six months), with glasses between $14 and $17, and a long bottle list with prices that are often lower than online retail. He was inspired by places he's visited in Stockholm and Japan that price wine and spirits at an accessible level and allow enthusiasts to actually 'taste the fruits' of often labor-intensive curation. 'We're not trying to profit disproportionately just because it's rare and in demand,' Capella told Eater over email. There are plenty of wines priced between the high-$30s and mid-$40s, alongside higher-end bottles for those looking to ball out. Cocktails come from a longtime relationship with Varnish co-founder Eric Alperin, who advised on the drinks and helped install lead bartender Wolfgang Alexander at Cannonball. Drinks reflect the Milk & Honey school of bartenders with playful takes on classics like the Raymond Hill (Manhattan) using bourbon, amaro lucano, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and mole. Fettle Design helped preserve the building's main interior, hoping to conjure a New York, East Coast, and London feel that stands in contrast to places like Hippo. Capella and Fettle saw the moody space working with a darker color palette; tasteful landscape art, vintage lighting, indoor plants, and pops of old-timey wallpaper complete the look. A more cheerful patio with French cafe-style chairs and greenery works well as an al fresco summer dinner. Eventually, service will expand daily to later hours and a daytime menu on weekends (no weekday lunch, though). With two industry veterans at the helm and a versatile, classic ambience — plus the very approachable food — Cannonball has brightened South Pasadena's dining scene in a big way. Cannonball is open Thursday to Monday from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with expanded hours forthcoming; it's located at 1010 Mission Street, South Pasadena, CA, 91030. Reservations are available on Resy . Former New College official now facing felonies after indecent exposure accusations

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — A former New College of Florida official and former spokesperson for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is now facing felony charges after authorities said he exposed himself to multiple people over the course of several months. Fredrick Piccolo Jr.'s charges were upgraded from misdemeanors to felonies this week, according to Sarasota County jail records. He faces three counts of exposure of sexual organs — each of which is considered a third-degree felony due to it being a second or subsequent offense. 'Pure evil': Lakeland man sets house on fire with roommates inside, Judd says The man who once played a prominent role in Florida politics was arrested by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office in April after deputies said he exposed himself to a woman while asking her for directions. He's also accused of exposing himself to multiple people at department stores in the University Town Center Mall in Sarasota. Court records show the incidents occurred between Aug. 22 and Sept. 4 of last year. Piccolo worked as the director of communications for DeSantis' office from August 2020 to December 2021 before he resigned over a controversial social media post. He also held leadership roles with the Florida Speaker of the House and New College in Sarasota. His father, Rick Piccolo, told News Channel 8 that a worsening medical condition has contributed to his son's 'impulsive and compulsive behaviors,' including 'hypersexual activities.' The Piccolo family provided a statement this week saying they have sought medical and mental health services to help him recover. The family's full statement is below. While our family is deeply saddened and surprised by the accusations contained in the arrest reports, our son Fred Jr. was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease about ten years ago. As the disease has progressed, he has had various and increasing medications for the affliction. One of the listed side effects of the medications, particularly the dopamine agonists he is taking, is impulsive and compulsive behaviors, including gambling and hypersexuality activities. We are very sorry that any individuals were subjected to any inappropriate conduct, and we have already started the medical and mental health services necessary to return him to the wonderful and caring individual we knew before this decade of doctor prescribed medication. Rick Piccolo Jail records show Piccolo Jr. was booked into jail on the upgraded charges on May 21, but bonded out two days later. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘Pros and cons' to time-limiting St Clair all-day parks

Surfing New Zealand South Island director Jimi Higgins says a Dunedin City Council proposal to turn all-day parking into time-restricted spots could hurt competitions but help recreational surfers keen for a parking spot near the water. PHOTO: GERARD O'BRIEN Proposed parking changes at St Clair Beach present "pros and cons" for surfers, but nearby businesses could benefit from an end to people taking up a parking spot all day at the often bustling Dunedin destination. The Dunedin City Council has proposed a change to a range of parking restrictions in and around the Esplanade at St Clair. In general, all-day parking spaces in the area are earmarked to become either two-hour or four-hour time-restricted spaces along with several five-minute spots. Surfing New Zealand South Island director Jimi Higgins said the proposal "had its pros and cons", benefiting those who wanted to get into the water for an hour or so, or perhaps attend a surfing lesson. But surfing competitions could suffer because visitors relied on the all-day parking spots, often pulling up for a day or two while a competition was on. "I think for recreational surfing it might be quite good because it frees up a lot of parks," Mr Higgins said. "We've been noticing there's a lot of parking issues down there with people parking all day or having to park blocks away to go visit the beach. "But for our competitions it's going to negatively impact that because we have people coming from around Otago, around Dunedin and even around the country who like to get involved. "And they normally park there the whole day or maybe for a couple of days to compete and spectate and they won't be able to do that any more." St Clair played host to about five competitions a year, including the recent South Island Champs over Easter, which is the second biggest event in the country. "We had visitors from the Far North, Taranaki, all across the country coming down in their motorhomes, parking up at St Clair Beach, spending money at all the restaurants and the businesses. "And now they won't be able to do that." Restaurateur Katrina Toovey owns the busy Italian eatery Esplanade and the recently opened wine bar Piccolo and artisan gelato store Sorella Gelato next door. She said at present the parking in the area was "a bit hectic" and the number of cars moving through the beachfront area put people, often unaccompanied children, at risk. Yet, Ms Toovey welcomed an end to all-day parking. "I think it's good for visitors to the area," she said. "It means that the parks will turn as opposed to someone being there sometimes for days and days, to be honest." Council transport group manager Jeanine Benson said the proposed changes aimed to increase parking turnover and availability, and to help better meet the needs of local businesses and the community. The proposal would not result in the removal or loss of any free parking spaces in the area and all parks would still remain free of charge. Parking in the council managed carpark overlooking the Esplanade and ocean would remain unrestricted. Feedback would be taken into consideration before any final decisions were made, she said.
