Lens sign Metz full-back Matthieu Udol
Lens have announced the signing of Metz left-back and captain Matthieu Udol (29). Udol lead Les Grenats to a Ligue 1 promotion for his 19th season as a FC Metz Academy graduate. The 29-year-old has put pen to paper over a three-year contract with Pierre Sage's Sang et Or. Lens and Metz previously reached an agreement over a €5m transfer package, including €1.5m in performance-related add-ons. Metz have made it no secret over their desire to retain the services of their captain. Udol even skipped pre-season with Metz to force through his move to Lens. Metz head coach Stéphane Le Mignan described the situation as disturbing. 'If we were still in Ligue 2, I could understand. But we're in Ligue 1 now!' Le Mignan explained. 'I'm focused on the players who want to work.' Advertisement Udol will wear the No. 14 jersey with RC Lens. GFFN | Bastien Cheval

Australian international Matthew Ryan departs Lens
RC Lens have officially confirmed the departure of Matthew Ryan (33) from the club, with the Australian international coming to the end of his contract. The goalkeeper made 14 appearances for the club since joining in the winter transfer window. Ryan stepped into a precarious situation for Les Sang et Or during a disruptive January where they lost both of their starting centre-backs, Abdukodir Khusanov and Kevin Danso, as well as their captain and goalkeeper, Brice Samba. Ryan's arrival helped steady the ship and allow for Lens to finish in 8th, only five points behind RC Strasbourg Alsace in the UEFA Europa Conference League position. Advertisement It's been a busy day for Lens with the club also announcing a series of departures, including former Leicester City midfielder Nampalys Mendy, as well as Denis Petric and M'Bala Nzola, as they prepare for a significant rebuild under former Olympique Lyonnais head coach Pierre Sage. Lens interested in Auxerre's Gaëtan Perrin
Gaëtan Perrin (29) is expected to leave AJ Auxerre this summer, according to a report from L'Équipe, the Frenchman is attracting interest from Ligue 1 rivals RC Lens. The right-winger was exceptional for L'AJA last season, scoring 10 goals and registering 11 assists in 35 games in Ligue 1. Having impressed, it is expected that Perrin will leave Auxerre this summer, and he won't be short of suitors. In recent months, sources have evoked a potential move to the MLS in the USA, however, his form last season is also seeing French clubs register an interest. Advertisement Ouest-France evoked an interest from Stade Rennais last month. However, there is now also interest from Lens, managed by former Olympique Lyonnais manager Pierre Sage. L'Équipe understands that Perrin may have wanted a new experience, outside of France, but with interest within Ligue 1 growing, a stay in his native country could now be on the cards. Pierre Sage on Rayan Cherki: ‘There is no reason for him not to become one of the best players in the world.'
Pierre Sage on Rayan Cherki: 'There is no reason for him not to become one of the best players in the world.' Rayan Cherki (21) has seen his stock rise significantly in recent weeks and months. After the most successful campaign of his young career, the Olympique Lyonnais academy product recently made his debut for the France national team. Coming off the bench in the semi-final of the UEFA Nations League on Thursday, he netted a spectacular volley and registered an assist, despite Les Bleus being knocked out of the competition. Having scored 12 goals and registered 20 assists for Lyon last season, he is also expected to secure a big move away from his formative club this summer. Manchester City are in pole position to sign the France international, however, Liverpool too retain a strong interest. Advertisement He has now received high praise from one of his former managers at OL, Pierre Sage, who worked with Cherki over an 18-month period and oversaw his rise to prominence. 'His goal against Spain shows that he is different,' Sage told Le Parisien. He continued, 'His ability to see what others do not, to pull off high-quality actions, makes him a world-class player. This goal, for example, is just a part of the expression of his talent. Rayan, as we know, won't be limited from a technical or tactical standpoint. If he continues to express these things over time, in different contexts, with his club as well as with his national team, there is no reason for him not to become one of the best players in the world in the years to come.' Whether that will be with Manchester City, we will soon find out. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Pierre Sage appointed Lens manager
RC Lens have appointed Pierre Sage as their new manager. The former Olympique Lyonnais head coach succeeds Will Still in the role. Lens have been without a manager since the final day of the Ligue 1 season, when Still shocked journalists by announcing his departure after just one season at the helm. He has since taken the job at Southampton. Just over two weeks after his departure, Lens have named his successor – Sage. Advertisement It is the Frenchman's first job since his sacking as manager of Lyon at the start of the year. With the chances of UEFA Champions League qualification slipping away, Paulo Fonseca was brought in at OL. Despite a brief uptick, the Portuguese manager failed to get Lyon into the top four. The likes of USL Dunkerque's Luís Castro and EA Guingamp's Sylvain Ripoll had been linked with the job, however, Sage has now signed on the dotted line. His contract runs until 2028.
