Mahindra wants to be a top 15 brand in Australia
Mahindra is aiming to be one of Australia's top 15 best-selling brands by the end of the decade as it moves from its traditional workhorse utes to mainstream SUVs – including electric vehicles (EVs). Speaking at the launch of the 2025 Mahindra 3XO SUV – Australia's cheapest SUV – Mahindra head of international operations Sachin Arolkar told media the industrial giant has serious ambitions here. 'We have set an ambitious goal … we want to be a top 15 player by 2030,' Mr Arolkar said. 'Clearly Australia is one of the biggest ute and SUV markets, and Mahindra as a brand is very strong in the ute segment and the SUV segment.' Above: Mahindra BE 6e While it doesn't report its sales figures to VFACTS like most new vehicle brands in Australia, Mahindra said it sold 4185 vehicles here last year. The result puts Mahindra ahead of Mini (3982) and behind Chevrolet (4303) to sit 32nd for the 2024 calendar year. The final brand in the top 15 in 2024 was Mercedes-Benz with 24,831 sales, meaning Mahindra is looking for a six-fold increase in its sales over the next five years. The 2025 XUV 3XO is the first Mahindra to enter the small SUV segment in Australia, which made up almost one-fifth of all new-vehicle sales in 2024. The XUV 3XO (above) joins a lineup of only three models with the Scorpio and XUV 700 large SUVs the only other offerings in local Mahindra showrooms, with no new shipments of the S11 Pik-Up planned as it no longer meets safety standards. The automaker has said it's working towards the new 2026 protocols being introduced by safety authority ANCAP for all models, including the next-generation Pik-Up and yet-to-be-rated XUV 3XO. Mr Arolkar expects the 3XO to become the brand's best-selling model until new products – including the all-new Pik-Up in 2026 – arrive in Australia. The company plans to add at least one product to Australian showrooms every year as it chases its top 15 goal. Above: Mahindra Vision Thar.e concept Its global rebirth has seen it reveal two battery-electric SUVs, the XEV 9e and the BE 6e, in late 2024. Both are on Mahindra Australia's wish-list, although neither are confirmed for local sale. There's also a next-generation version of its Jeep Wrangler -aping Thar SUV – the current generation of which landed Mahindra in court – locked in for Australia, but this is still several years away with exact timing to be confirmed. As the brand enters more segments, Mr Arolkar said the further growth will also come from adding to its dealer count, which is currently around 70 across Australia. 'We plan to have 10 more, 80-plus dealers including service [centres], and that growth is mainly in metro areas,' Mr Arolkar told CarExpert. 'If you look at our journey in this market, which spans over 20 years, it has been very different compared to the other emerging brands. 'We started as a distributor of tractors, and you know the challenges which come with that when you have to prove your product service after sales in the rural outback, which is very important.' 'We have proved, over a period of 20 years, that we have survived the Australian outback, which is one of the more challenging domains. 'Now, with the newer, sophisticated, New Age products coming in, we are taking our experience from the regional areas, now getting into the metros, and that's what differentiates our brand compared to the other emerging brands.'

Mahindra preps next-gen Pik-Up
Mahindra has revealed its plans to launch an all-new generation of the Pik-Up, with a focus on bringing a competitive product Down Under. Codenamed Project Z121, the next-gen dual-cab one-tonner is built off the Global Pik Up concept first shown in 2023. It's expected to debut in production form in India later this year, with a launch in export markets like Australia and New Zealand targeted for 2026. This new Pik-Up promises to be a clean-slate redesign, underpinned by a heavily modified version of the ladder-frame chassis used in the new Thar Roxx SUV. Read more First Drive: Mahindra XUV 3XO Mahindra President of Automotive Technology and Product Development, Velusamy R, was reported as saying the new Pik-Up 'Is the number one dream program for us right now. We are putting a big focus on the pick-up truck… it has the most advanced ladder-frame… it is based on the Thar Roxx and that platform is the latest-generation – generation four,' when speaking with Australian media in India earlier in the month. Expect multiple bodystyles, including single and double cab variants, all engineered to meet European and Australian crash safety standards. That means the new Pik-Up will include features like autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, trailer-sway control, driver-attention alert and multiple airbags. Power will likely come from a version of Mahindra's 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, mated to six-speed auto. Rear-drive and switchable 4×4 drivelines will be offered. Hybrid variants may follow further down the line, with Mahindra already exploring electrified options. One likely option includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine acting as a range extender for an electric drivetrain which is a setup being developed for future Mahindra SUVs. Mahindra's Head of International Operations, Sachin Arolkar, confirmed that the vehicle has been developed with extensive input from Australian stakeholders. 'Our product planning team was in Australia to get the right inputs… that's the change,' he said. 'Now, starting with Z121, we are developing vehicles purely for international markets.' Arolkar noted that while some components may be sourced externally, the engineering and development remain in-house and tailored for real-world reliability.

Mahindra utes clock up million-kilometre milestone
A fleet of Mahindra Pik-Up utes are among the hardest working vehicles in Australia. Newcastle-based Valley Express, a professional courier service that specialises in working with the Australian mining industry, has been recognised by Mahindra this week for its loyalty after one of its Pik-Up utes recently clocked up more than a million kilometres. Valley Express initially purchased five Mahindra Pik-Ups in 2021 to deliver equipment across the country, with the remaining four others also close to approaching the seven-figure milestone. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. The freight company was so impressed by the reliability of the utes that it added another two more last year. "We have been really pleased with the performance of the Mahindra Pik-Up ute," the Valley Express director Megan Hinds told CarExpert. "The value for money is what attracted us to them in the first place. Essentially we can get two of these utes for the price of one well-known alternative. "And since we've had them, they have proven to be extremely reliable which is critical for our business." Valley Express labels itself as an 'urgent' freight company that assists with delivering anything from a small satchel to heavy equipment for breakdown repairs. Its Mahindra Pik-Ups have travelled across the country from their Newcastle base, as far afield as Alice Springs, Far North Queensland and Western Australia. "Each car covers approximately 5000-7000 kilometres a week, or around 250,000km a year, and they are on the road 24 hours a day, seven days a week," added Hinds. Each Pik-Up is fully serviced weekly by Hunter Valley Mahindra in Rutherford. "We have had to do a bit of maintenance with them over that time, and replaced the gearbox on each of them every 250,000km or so," said Hinds. "But that has been more of a preventative measure, other than general wear and tear and consumables like tyres and brakes. We haven't had a vehicle off the road or let us down on the job. "They are all still running the original engine, with the same fuel-injectors, turbochargers, alternators and power steering pumps." Mahindra Automotive's Shivank Bargoti visited Valley Express earlier this week to recognise the longevity milestone of the company's vehicles, and to present Hinds and her team with a series of million-kilometres plaques for the utes. "Valley Express has been a loyal Mahindra customer for years, and their million-kilometre fleet highlights what the Pik-Up was built for – dependable performance at exceptional value," said Bargoti. "This kind of longevity doesn't happen by accident. It's what makes Mahindra stand out in the real working world."
