More patients helped with free cancer screenings at west hospital

More patients helped with free cancer screenings at west hospital The Pretoria West Hospital was recently visited by The Pink Drive, which was offering free cancer screenings. This was a follow-up on their visit last year, once again promoting a vital campaign that focuses on bringing cancer screening services to communities served by hospitals that lack in-house mammography facilities. Stephina Ramabulana, head of the hospital's X-ray Department, said, 'Last year's visit saw overwhelming demand for mammograms, with only a limited number of patients able to be screened. 'Learning from that experience, the Pink Drive team returned better equipped this year, significantly increasing the number of patients they were able to assist, much to the benefit of the community.' The Pink Drive initiative offers comprehensive cancer screening, including: – Mammograms for early detection of breast cancer – Breast self-examinations – Pap smears for cervical cancer – PSA tests for prostate screening. 'We are also deeply thankful for the collaboration with colleagues from the district health team under the maternal, child and women's health program (MCWH), who came to stand with us and assist as staff during the campaign. 'Their support played a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the screening process and in managing the increased patient turnout,' Ramabulana continued. She said that the hospital is truly grateful for the continued partnership with the Pink Drive team, the MCWH programme, and all involved stakeholders. She added that the hospital sincerely hopes this collaboration becomes an annual tradition, allowing more patients the opportunity for early detection and timely intervention. 'This initiative is a remarkable collaboration that extends vital healthcare access not only to residents of Pretoria West but also to surrounding clinics and communities. 'As the Head of the X-ray Unit at Pretoria West Hospital, I find it incredibly rewarding to witness patients expressing heartfelt gratitude and encouraging us to continue these efforts. 'Their appreciation reinforces the importance of ongoing cancer screening initiatives,' Ramabulana said. The St Stithians Boys' first hockey team closed off their season on a high note, beating St John's College at the Superpark Red on Pink Derby Day. Read more: Rand Park boys impress at NWU Hockey Clinic Saints dominated the first half with strong attacking play and quick ball movement, heading into half-time with a comfortable 2–0 lead. St John's, however, were not ready to back down, and came out firing in the second half, pulling one goal back and putting the home team under pressure. Despite the shift in momentum, Saints regrouped and responded with two more goals, sealing a well-earned 4–1 victory. Coaches Miguel de Grasa and Patrick Ogan praised the team's performance. 'I thought we moved the ball really nicely and made good connections,' said De Grasa. 'We were quite clinical in the [defence]. We might have left one or two goals out there, but, for the most part, we took our chances.' Ogan highlighted the team's ability to stay composed under pressure. 'We were only under pressure when we made a few silly mistakes, but the boys reacted well. After conceding, we put them under pressure again and scored twice more.' Throughout the game, the Saints made small tactical tweaks, including switching between a three-quarter press and a full press when needed. 'We didn't change too much,' the coaches explained. 'These are things we've built into the boys from game one. They've learnt to adapt and execute the plan.' The match marked the end of the season for the Saints' first team, and what a season it's been. They lost only three matches all year. 'It was a really successful season with a good bunch of guys,' the coaches said proudly. 'Ending it with a win at home made it even more special.' Despite the pressure, and two yellow cards to the Saints, the team dug deep to defend their narrow lead and hold on for the win. Speaking after the game, the Saints' first team coach, Thoriso Shihau, said: 'It was a game of two halves. I thought in the second half we went to sleep, but credit to St John's, they came back and gave us a tough time. Credit to my boys as well for holding on and getting the win.' 'St John's really controlled the tempo at that point, but we managed to keep it together.' With this being their final game of the season, Shihau expressed pride in his team's overall performance. 'We've been processed the entire season and it's been evident in the results. The boys worked hard, and they deserved the win.'
