Groundbreaking ceremony marks the official start of Pipkin Middle School's construction
SPRINGFIELD, Mo – Springfield Public Schools (SPS) broke ground at the location of the new Pipkin Middle School on Monday, June 9.
The ceremony marks the official beginning of construction on the project on Campbell Avenue. Funding comes from Proposition S, authorized by voters in 2023, which put forth $53 million for the project.
The new location is a quarter of a mile from the current school, bordered by West Division Street to the north, West Lynn Street to the south and North Campbell Avenue to the east.
The new 8.86-acre property, previously owned by The General Council of the Assemblies of God, was bought by SPS on January 21, 2025.
Proposal to increase SPD salaries by 13.5%
The purchase was unanimously approved in March 2024 by the Board of Education, following an extensive search for land large enough for the school's needs and close to the midtown neighborhood.
The original Pipkin building opened in 1925. Before demolition, the facility had the lowest condition score of any SPS building. The original school was landlocked, limiting SPS's ability to expand infrastructure, parking and outdoor activities.
The construction is set to be complete in 2027.
