Justice Allison Riggs speaks at NC Democratic Party convention in Pitt County
WINTERVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Saturday, May 17, 2025, the North Carolina Democratic Party's Third Congressional District Convention took place at Pitt Community College. Attending the convention was NC Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs, who served as a guest speaker. The convention ran from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. 'To thank the people in this room and in this space, in this larger region, who have done so much not only to get me over the finish line on Election Day, but to defend our win. I also want them to understand that I believe in a transparent and accountable judiciary,' Justice Riggs said. 'So, I'm not going to be a stranger in these parts, and Justice Anita Earls is up for election in 2026, and I'm going to work tirelessly to make sure we keep her in her seat and continue to elect judges who will put the Constitution and country over party and personal ambition.' Riggs won the Nov. 5, 2024, election by 734 votes. Her opponent, Republican Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin, attempted to throw out more than 65,000 ballots because of it. After a six-month court battle, a Trump-appointed judge ordered the Board of Elections to certify the race. Griffin ultimately conceded. 'She didn't give up. A lot of people would have. It seemed insurmountable, the amount of money that was spent in this state was tied to something inherently wrong,' Chair of the 3rd Congressional District of the North Carolina Democratic Party Wesley Boykin said. Riggs emphasized this fight was about more than a single election, it was about democracy. 'We can't just brush over this and pretend it didn't happen,' she said. 'We had a near-miss of a constitutional crisis. Over 68,000 eligible North Carolina voters who cast lawful ballots were at risk of losing their right to vote.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Greenville Country Club had 176 golfers on the course Thursday, May 8, 2025 for the third-annual Trey Kuhn Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament. The tournament helps fund scholarships to students enrolled at Pitt Community College in the construction program. Kuhn was in the program when he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma and the tournament highlights May as Brain Tumor Awareness Month. Kuhn's parents Cindy and Will said they are grateful for the abundance of support this tournament has gotten over the last several years. 'The support we've gotten from the community, the donations, our auction, our raffle and as I said, a sold out event has just been very heartwarming,' they said. 'We're really honored with the turnout and the support that we get and what's been great is the reaction from the kids that get the scholarships, because it certainly gives them an opportunity they might not have had before and it's just great to see the the excitement in their eyes from that.'The tournament is now able to give five students a scholarship for the construction program to help grow these trades and the community in the near future. Pitt County partnership aims to help get businesses going
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Applications are now open for a new program at Pitt Community College called Building Resilient Entrepreneurs in Winterville or BREW. It is a collaboration between the Winterville Chamber of Commerce, Pitt Community College Small Business Center and Town of Winterville. 'How can we help businesses start?,' Executive Director for the Winterville Chamber of Commerce Rebecca Caveness said. 'A lot of what the business owner said that we're in the room is I wish we had a checklist. I wish there was a checklist. I wish there was a guidebook for like how to start.' 'We are hoping that this program will kind of mobilize some of our entrepreneurs that live, work and play in the town of Winterville to hopefully build some strong, sustainable businesses,' Economic Development Planner for the Town of Winterville Tristyn Daughtry said. The program lasts 12 weeks. 'You have to either be getting ready to start a business or you have started a business in the last 12 months,' Caveness said. 'You have to be in Pitt County and your service area has to include Winterville, North Carolina.' The program is designed to give people tools and resources to start a business. 'The goal of the program is for sustainability. So, so starting and launching a business is hard,' Daughtry said. 'We have a lot of entrepreneurs that are here in one level and they might not have the expertise or the knowledge or even sometimes just the commitment to be able to just full send and do it and so the goal is to really grow out their knowledge, equip them with the resources and knowledge to launch the business and to do it successfully and for the long term.' 'The key component that we wanted to include in this was the mentorship aspect,' Caveness said. 'So, it's all well and good to have education, to have the knowledge you're given these tools, but it can still be really intimidating if you don't have somebody who you're going to pick up the phone and call and say, 'I've hit a snag. You know, I really need some help.'' Applications for the program are now open. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pitt Community College honors employee one year after her passing
WINTERVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Pitt Community College is honoring a beloved employee a year after her passing through the creation of a new scholarship. The Lynn Griffin Memorial Scholarship will benefit juniors and seniors with hands-on training in the Pitt County Schools Technical Academy. Griffin was a former director of PCC and Pitt County Schools Technical Academy. She was 54 years old when she passed from ALS. Faculty members said they're excited for her legacy to live on. 'It's hard to describe because my first day, I was here at Pitt Community College two years ago. I met Lynn on my first day, and to say she was a good or great person is an understatement for her,' Dean of Construction and Industrial Technology Patrick Jacques said. 'She was really devoted. We get an opportunity to give back to her legacy and what she did for Pitt and for our high school students here in the county.' The Technical Academy busses participants to and from PCC's main campus. The scholarship would give back to students who want to continue their degree after they graduate from high school. The program offers hands-on training for students whose respective high schools don't provide services in technology. The scholarship will continue to honor Griffin, who spearheaded the growth of PCC's Technology Department. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
