Verifone and PagBrasil Launch Exclusive International Pix Payment Solution for Brazilian Shoppers in the U.S.

NEW YORK, July 22, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — PagBrasil and Verifone have partnered to launch an in-store alternative payment method (APM) enabling Brazilian shoppers to pay in Brazilian Reais (BRL) using Pix while shopping in the United States. This first-of-its-kind solution allows U.S. merchants to accept the Brazilian payment method. Pix, Brazil's instant payment system created by its Central Bank in 2020, offers a seamless, cost-effective, and frictionless payment experience for Brazilians. It allows users to send and receive money, as well as make payments, within seconds, 24/7, without relying on cash or cards. Now, with International Pix, a solution built by PagBrasil within the Pix framework, Brazilian consumers can make Pix payments in the U.S. with real-time currency conversion. The launch follows the signing of an exclusive agreement between Verifone and PagBrasil, giving Verifone sole rights to offer the Brazilian company's International Pix payments in the U.S. Merchants can activate International Pix at the point of sale through Verifone's hardware-agnostic, gateway-agnostic APM API without needing to upgrade existing systems. 'This is a game-changer for U.S. merchants in high-tourism markets like Florida and New York,' said Madhu Vasu, SVP Global Product Management at Verifone. 'Only Verifone can offer this capability at the point of sale today, giving merchants a powerful differentiator to attract and serve the 1.9 million Brazilian Tourists who spend more than $4.1 billion annually in the U.S.' The magnitude of this opportunity is reinforced by recent travel trends: from 2023 to 2024, the number of Brazilians traveling to the U.S. rose by more than 17%, reaching 1.9 million visitors. Pix has seen a 57% year-over-year growth in transaction volume and is used by over 160 million people – about 75% of Brazil's population. With this new offering, Brazilian shoppers can now pay in their local currency, avoiding high foreign exchange conversion fees typically charged on international credit card purchases. 'We're thrilled to partner with Verifone to bring International Pix to U.S. retail,' said Ralf Germer, Chief Executive Officer at PagBrasil. 'This collaboration doesn't just expand Pix's global footprint — it gives U.S. merchants a powerful new way to capture spend from millions of Brazilian tourists, while offering shoppers the speed, security and simplicity they already trust at home. It's a win-win for local stores and travelers alike.' Frictionless, Less-Costly In-Store Payments for Brazilian Tourists International Pix allows Brazilian shoppers to pay in their local currency, saving in foreign exchange conversion fees and taxes per transaction. This creates a seamless and cost-effective in-store experience that encourages discretionary and repeat spending. Lower Processing Costs and Fewer Chargebacks for U.S. Merchants International Pix transactions via Verifone are processed at approximately 2% with no additional fees, compared to 2–3% plus fixed fees for credit cards. As a real-time bank-to-bank transfer, Pix payments also help avoid the risk of chargebacks, reducing risk and overhead for merchants. International Pix: Revenue Growth Potential for U.S. Retailers With International Pix now available in the U.S., Verifone and PagBrasil are helping merchants capture more international spend, boost customer satisfaction and loyalty, and stay ahead in an increasingly competitive retail landscape. Capitalizing on Brazil's World Cup Travel Surge Many Brazilians have already traveled to the U.S. for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, and even larger numbers are expected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where most matches will take place in the United States. The U.S. Travel Association projects that over 6 million international travelers will visit the U.S. for the World Cup. In total, nearly $200 billion in direct travel spending comes from international visitors each year. With Brazilians consistently among the top groups of overseas visitors, International Pix unlocks significant potential for merchants to capture more of this high-value spending during these global events and beyond. How AI is helping small businesses punch above their weight in emerging markets

Whether it's a craft brewery in Manila, a coffee roaster in Nairobi or a specialty grocery store in Bogotá, small and medium-sized business owners are now empowered to: Automate inventory and customer service Predict demand and manage stock Deliver hyper-targeted promotions Analyse customer behaviour in real time The agility of SMEs, which was once seen as a liability, is now a competitive advantage. While multinationals navigate bureaucratic layers, small businesses can pivot instantly, test new strategies and respond to data on the fly. In many of these regions, economies tend to be U-shaped, with large clusters of SMEs on one end, dominant enterprises on the other and very few mid-sized players in between. AI is now bridging that gap. A new data goldmine One of the most powerful enablers of this revolution is the recent explosion in digital data. For years, small businesses lacked the behavioural insights that gave large companies their edge. But today, the rise of digital wallets (like GCash in the Philippines, UPI in India, Pix in Brazil), e-commerce platforms and mobile-first apps has created a wealth of consumer data that SMEs can finally access. Above GCash digital wallet in the Philippines (Photo: Courtesy of Miguel Guerrero) This data, once non-existent, is now rich, real-time and largely untapped. Yet much of this data remains underutilised, showcasing a major opportunity for SMEs to unlock competitive advantage through better targeting and decision-making. With AI, small businesses can: Predict customer preferences Send personalised messages and offers Run data-driven marketing campaigns This kind of precision targeting was previously unthinkable for most SMEs. Now it's becoming the norm. Read more: Do you sound like ChatGPT? Research says AI is changing how we speak The connectivity boom Another game-changer is the acceleration of global internet access. In India alone, over 900 million people are connected to the internet, creating digital footprints, market insights and advertising potential that SMEs can now harness. Mobile-first ecosystems are rapidly connecting billions across Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and unlocking new markets and demand. Above India's internet revolution (Photo: Courtesy of Miguel Guerrero) This wave of connectivity isn't just about access, it's about participation. More consumers mean more data, more commerce and more competition. And SMEs are perfectly positioned to seize the opportunity. Many emerging market businesses have a hidden edge: they're not burdened by legacy systems. Unlike Western enterprises weighed down by outdated infrastructure, these businesses can adopt AI from a clean slate—mobile-first, cloud-ready and fast to deploy. Governments are recognising this, too. Initiatives like the Philippines' Center for AI Research, India's Digital India and Brazil's Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan (PBIA) are supporting SME adoption through funding, infrastructure and education. Read more: Why AI needs ethics now more than ever, and how this Filipino data scientist is making it happen Real stories, real impact The impact of AI is already visible across global markets. In Colorado, Taspen's Organics switched from broad targeting to Otis' precise AI targeting and achieved a 10x return on ad spend (ROAS) by reaching high-intent customers with tailored promotions. In Southeast Asia, GrabRewards leverages AI-powered gamification and personalised offers across a network of coffee shop partners. In India, Stylumia helps fashion brands minimise overstock through AI-based demand forecasting, markdown reduction and waste control In the Philippines, Triple i Consulting reports that AI is enhancing customer insights, service and efficiency for Philippine SMEs. These aren't isolated success stories; they're signals of a structural shift in how global business is done. Why emerging markets are poised to lead Emerging markets are becoming the leaders of the AI revolution. Here's why: Minimal legacy systems: Businesses can adopt AI directly, without needing to undo outdated systems. Mobile-first ecosystems: Customers interact with businesses through smartphones, making digital data collection seamless. Government support: Policy momentum is pushing digital transformation for SMEs. Massive data potential: Platforms like GCash, UPI, and Pix are creating behaviour-rich datasets at scale. In short, the infrastructure and conditions for SME success are already in place. It's just a matter of activation. Getting started with AI The best part? You don't need to go all-in from day one. SMEs can (and should) start small. Begin with a bottleneck: Is social media management draining your time? Are customer inquiries piling up? Is marketing guesswork eating into your budget? From there, identify an AI tool that solves that specific problem. Platforms like ChatGPT (copywriting), Canva (design) and Otis AI (advertising) require little training but deliver immediate results. Set a 90-day goal: Reduce response time, improve ad engagement or increase conversions. Measure, learn and scale. Read more: How to embrace AI without losing ourselves The future Is AI-powered and small-business-led We're living through a quiet but profound revolution where technology, which was once reserved for enterprise giants, is now democratised and decentralised. The AI-powered SMB revolution won't just reshape businesses in emerging markets; it may redefine global commerce. Because for the first time, scale and access are no longer prerequisites for success. Like the steam engine reshaped commerce in the 18th century, AI is reshaping it today. Only this time, the revolution is mobile, digital and global. What matters now is agility, intelligence, and a willingness to adapt. And in that race, SMEs finally have the tools to lead.

Brazil's prepaid card, digital wallet market to reach $53B by 2030

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... A new report has predicted growth for Brazil's prepaid card and digital wallet market before the end of the decade, powered by regulatory reforms and consumer behavior. The report, compiled by Research and Markets, tips Brazil's prepaid card and digital wallet to reach $53.42 billion before the end of the decade. The market will grow by an 11.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2025 and 2029. From 2020 to 2024, the ecosystem recorded a meteoric growth rate, underscored by a CAGR of 17.9%. While the forecasted ecosystem growth pales compared to the numbers from 2020, the report highlights the consistency of the growth. Several factors are powering the growth spurt in the prepaid card market. The report mentions Brazil's embrace of Pix, an instant payment system launched by the country's central bank. The numbers behind Pix are poised to trigger a surge in Brazil's prepaid card and digital wallet market by 2029. Pix is eyeing $30 billion in transaction volume from a new automation feature, racking numbers from its broad e-commerce application. The report also mentions changing consumer preferences as a key driver in the projected industry growth. According to the report, there is a growing demand for instant transactions in the South American country from consumers and merchants. While digital wallets have the edge in adoption, prepaid card service providers are leaning on key partnerships to catch up. On the regulatory side, the Central Bank of Brazil has pushed to standardize and cap prepaid card fees at 0.7%. 'The goal is enhanced market fairness and expanded merchant involvement, ensuring prepaid card competitiveness among payments, thus incentivizing small businesses to adopt these methods widely,' read the report. Major financial institutions like Banco do Brasil and Banco Bradesco currently hold most of the market share. However, the report tips fintechs like Nubank and new innovators to roll out offerings for consumers in the industry. Brazil marches on despite challenges Although Brazil has signaled a clear intent to pursue digitization in payments, the climb has been plagued by challenges. Its attempt at a central bank digital currency (CBDC) has been derailed over privacy concerns. Despite the challenges, Brazil's payment institutions are hurtling toward fully embracing emerging technologies. The country's largest commercial bank is exploring a stablecoin launch following plans by regulators to relax guardrails for issuers. Alipay completes world's first payment transaction using smart glasses Meanwhile, Chinese payment giant Alipay has announced the completion of a payment transaction using smart glasses in a pioneering move. Alipay reached the milestone in partnership with Chinese consumer electronics firm Meizu. Alipay successfully integrated its digital wallet with Meizu's smart glasses, leveraging emerging technology to pull off the transaction. Alipay revealed that the first-of-its-kind transaction leverages a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities ranging from voice recognition to novel authentication solutions. Furthermore, Alipay has confirmed that offline payment functionalities are being worked on in collaboration with Meizu. 'Users are able to make seamless payments with QR scans or voice commands from their smart glasses, backed by Alipay+'s AI-powered voice interface, intent recognition, and voiceprint authentication technologies,' read the statement. Alipay confirmed that the new features will be integrated into Alipay+ partner e-wallets before the end of the year, pending the rollout of its tech suite for smart glasses. On the flip side, Meizu has been probing the possibility of offline AI-powered smart glass payment functionalities. It will integrate Alipay+'s payment SDK solutions in its upcoming range of smart glasses. 'The offline payment function of smart glasses launched overseas by Meizu and Alipay+ has set a new technological benchmark for the industry,' said Peng Guo, General Manager of the XR Division of Meizu. Alipay has played a key role in China's CBDC experiments, setting the pace for the digital yuan's integration of red packet functionalities. Alipay and its parent company, Ant Group, have a streak of embracing emerging technology, with its affiliate companies turning to AI in droves. Alibaba (NASDAQ: BABA) has rolled out its suite of AI solutions to rival U.S.-based offerings, while its e-commerce unit is leveraging the technology to streamline the merchant process. Smart glasses record adoption spike Smart glasses are surging in popularity, with Rayban's and Meta's (NASDAQ: META) collaboration driving adoption figures to new highs. With its offering, Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) has joined the race, while a wave of Chinese consumer electronics firms are keen on pushing their products to the market. However, the journey has not always been smooth, with privacy and health concerns trailing the launch of the offerings. From the earliest integration of Meta's multimodal AI in Rayban glasses in 2023 to processing payments, the offering has come a long way in under three years.
