Google's second Android Canary release is already out for Pixel devices
Hadlee Simons / Android Authority TL;DR Google announced its Android Canary testing program earlier this month. Testers get access to cutting-edge features that still may not be stable enough for regular use. Today Google shares that its second Android Canary release is now available. Two weeks ago, Google introduced a new track for Android testing, as it expanded its existing Android Beta program to also begin offering Android Canary builds. Representing Google's very latest, still very much in-development changes, Canary isn't meant for your daily driver, and is instead focused at testers who will trade stability for early access. And now we're already getting our second Canary release. Today Google releases Android Canary 2507. Builds are available for Pixel devices from the Pixel 6 series on up through the present, including foldables and tablets. If you already flashed your Pixel with a Canary release earlier this month, sit back and relax, because this one should be coming down to you via a nice, convenient OTA update. If you have yet to get started with Android Canary releases and understand the risks involved, you can make the transition by using Google's Android Flash Tool to load the appropriate Canary build on your Pixel. We're already combing through Canary 2507, and will be sharing any noteworthy changes as we find them.

Sky's £13 Google Pixel 9a may steal shoppers away from the Pixel 10
Google is set to unveil the new Pixel 10 series at the Made By Google Event in August, but Sky Mobile's deal on the Pixel 9a may be tempting Google is weeks away from unveiling the latest addition to its Pixel smartphone series, but we've found a deal on its latest model that may be too good to pass up. The tech giant is set to showcase the Pixel 10 at its annual Made By Google Event in New York City on August 20, where we're expecting to catch a first glimpse of the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. But even as the launch looms, Google's latest smartphone is proving as popular as ever at one particular retailer. Over at Sky Mobile, the Pixel 9a has been highlighted as an 'in-demand' product as shoppers snap up the budget-friendly £13 package. This model first hit the market in April, designed as an affordable version of the standard Pixel 9. But despite its cheaper price, the 9a is packed with premium features, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) functions with Google Gemini and an IP68 dust and water resistance rating. It also boasts a Tensor processor, which Google says is powered by its 'fastest, most efficient chip' ever. Google also says it provides the 'best battery life of any Pixel' with more than 30 hours of runtime. The Pixel 9a comes on a 36-month contract, but customers have the option to upgrade their handset after 24 months if they wish. Shoppers should also note the £13 monthly price only covers the handset and must be taken alongside a Sky data plan. These range from £0 for 100MB through to £20 for unlimited data. Sky isn't the only brand to offer an affordable entry into the Pixel range, with Amazon reducing the phone from £499 to £429 when buying outright. There's also a selection of freebies available when ordering through Currys-backed retailer with select packages coming with Google Buds A Series, Pixel Buds Pro 2 or a Pixel Watch 3. A decent option is iD Mobile's £18.99 per month plan with £49 upfront, which provides 100GB of data and inclusive roaming in 50 destinations. Shoppers who already got their hands on the Pixel 9a have left hundreds of positive reviews on Amazon, with one saying: 'The cheaper affordable Pixel just got better. The perfect size at 6.3' and all the benefits of Pixel in a cheaper package. Great display, bigger battery, good cameras, smooth and responsive. Great phone.' Another says: 'A lot of phone for the money. This has been virtually flawless, it has a solid construction similar to an iPhone and a clean clutter-free OS with no bloatware. One plus is having both a finger print scanner and a Face ID equivalent. Yes, it does have a plastic back, but it feels premium.' Not everyone is sold on the Pixel 9a, as this mixed review says: 'Battery life is good, size is alright but the bezels are quite big. It's a decent price but one issue is the Bluetooth keeps reconnecting randomly which is frustrating as someone that uses Bluetooth earphones all the time.' While another five-star review says: 'The design is clean and feels good in the hand. Performance is fast and smooth, with enough power for daily use and multitasking. The camera is impressive, especially with features like Macro Focus and the 'Add Me' option for group photos. "Battery life is solid and easily lasts all day, and I like that it's made with recycled materials. It's not perfect, but for the price, it's a great Android phone.'

Google is rolling out Gemini AI to more WearOS 4 smartwatches: Report
Google is reportedly expanding the availability of Gemini in Wear OS with a wider rollout for smartwatches running Wear OS 4. According to a 9To5Google report, with this wider rollout, users of select Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi smartwatches will be able to get Gemini AI on their wrists. Notably, Gemini is already available on the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic. This update replaces Google Assistant with Gemini and brings smarter features directly to eligible smartwatches. Once you update the Google Assistant app through the Google Play Store, you'll see a message saying, 'Gemini is now on your watch.' Gemini takes over from Google Assistant, but can still be launched using familiar methods, such as saying 'Hey Google,' long-pressing the side button, tapping its app icon, or using a new Tile or watch face shortcut, reported 9To5Google. What's new with Gemini Compared to Google Assistant, Gemini is designed to handle more natural conversations. Users can ask casual questions or give commands like: 'Do I need a raincoat today?' 'Send a message to Dad saying I'm running late for dinner.' 'Remember, I parked on level 2.' Gemini can reply with voice, text, or even images, and it shows helpful feedback buttons like thumbs up/down and a microphone for giving input. Notably, with this update, Google is also introducing the Material 3 Expressive design interface on eligible smartwatches. Works with Google Apps and more One of Gemini's biggest advantages is that it connects with other Google services, including: Gmail and Google Calendar Google Maps YouTube Music Google Messages Fitbit (on Pixel Watch) You can use Gemini to check your next meeting, get directions from an email, create a workout playlist, or start a run with Fitbit.

We found Google's next Pixel-only calling feature and it's borrowed from Apple (APK teardown)
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google may be launching a new AI-powered 'Call Message' feature that acts like an on-device voicemail with live transcriptions and summaries. The feature works offline without using data or Wi-Fi and is likely powered by Gemini Nano. Like many AI features Google debuts with new Pixel phones, Call Message could be a Pixel 10 exclusive launching next month. Google already packs its Pixel phones with a bunch of smart calling features like Call Screening, Direct My Call, Hold for Me, and Call Notes. These features are powered by AI to make handling calls easier and less annoying. Now, it looks like Google is cooking up another new calling feature that could take things to the next level — an AI-powered voicemail system that works entirely on your device, no internet needed. Discover Authority Insights for more exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage you won't find anywhere else. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. While inspecting the latest beta version of the Phone by Google app (version 184.0.785204977-publicbeta-pixel2024), we found a feature called 'Call Message.' Based on strings hidden in the app, this feature lets your phone take messages for missed or declined calls. It can even filter out spam calls, transcribe, and summarize everything in real time, right on your device. If someone calls you and you don't answer, your phone will ask them to leave a message. That message gets transcribed using on-device AI (most likely Gemini Nano), and you can view the audio, summary, and transcript in the Recents tab. The entire process will happen locally on your device since the feature doesn't use Wi-Fi or mobile data. However, if your phone is off or out of the network, Call Message won't work, and your carrier's voicemail will take over like usual. Additional code strings we found show just when Call Message (codenamed Beesly) kicks in: Beesly will activate when a call is missed. It also triggers when you manually reject a call from either the answer screen or a notification. Even if you decline a call from your connected Wear OS watch, Beesly will still start recording a message on your phone. A notification will confirm that Beesly is taking a message. Could Call Message be a Pixel 10 exclusive? There's a strong chance Call Message could debut as a Pixel 10 exclusive when the new phones launch next month. The feature's codename, 'Beesly,' follows Google's typical pattern for Pixel-only features. Past AI tools like Hold for Me and Direct My Call also had unique internal codenames during development, and many stayed Pixel-exclusive. What's even more telling is the app version number where we discovered the feature. The 'pixel2024' tag clearly points to a build meant for Pixel devices launched in 2024. Google often uses these tags when internally testing Pixel-first features. Perhaps Google will release Call Message as a Pixel 10 exclusive at first, but also roll it out to other Pixel phones at some point. It's also entirely possible the feature will take longer to mature and release later as part of a future Pixel Drop. If Call Message sounds a bit familiar, that's because it's similar to Apple's Live Voicemail feature. Finally, since the feature appears to rely on Gemini Nano, which is only available on select devices, it makes sense for Google to showcase it as part of the Pixel 10's exclusive AI experience. If Call Message sounds a bit familiar, that's because it's similar to Apple's Live Voicemail feature, which lets users view a real-time transcription of the message someone is leaving as they speak. However, Google's version seems to go a step further by potentially offering summaries, not just transcripts. Apple's version also works on-device, which is something Google seems to be taking inspiration from. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ .
