Pixel users get off nearly scot-free with July update. Galaxy users should install their update ASAP

There are a few unusual aspects to the latest monthly Pixel update. On the Fourth of July, we told you that Verizon leaked the Android 16 July security update. The update was officially released today, July 8th, and it contains only two bug fixes (aka functional patches) for Pixel phones. They were the same ones that were leaked by Verizon . Not only that, but there are zero Pixel security patches in the update which includes the security patch levels dated 2025-07-01 or 2025-07-05. The update says, "There are no Pixel security patches in the July 2025 Pixel Update Bulletin." The update is being sent to the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro , Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel 9a. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will not receive the update, while Pixel 6a users will get a mandatory update that throttles the capabilities of the battery, and reduces both battery capacity and charging performance once the battery on the phone reaches 400 charging cycles. There are two functional patches (aka bug fixes) for the Pixel models receiving the update which are listed in the beginning of the previous paragraph. Those devices will get the following functional patches: Display & Graphics Fix to improve smoother visual experiences in apps like Android Auto. Wi-Fi Fix to improve Wi-Fi connectivity stability and performance in certain conditions To install the update on compatible Pixel models go to Settings > System > Software updates > System update and follow directions . While Pixel users got off fairly easy for July, that's not the case for Galaxy device users who have just received from Samsung the July monthly update. The update from Sammy contains one critical and 21 high-severity vulnerabilities that Samsung attributed to the Android July security update. In addition, Samsung states that Samsung Mobile patched 17 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) along with a couple of issues that were patched by Samsung Semiconductor. There is a very wide discrepancy this month in the number of security patches Galaxy devices are getting compared to Pixel devices. Most of the time, Galaxy devices will automatically alert users to an update by sending them a notification that reads, "Update ready to install." You can also manually check for the update by swiping down from the top of your Galaxy device, and tap on the gear icon. Scroll down and press on Software update or System Updates. Next, tap on "Download and Install." Your Galaxy phone will check for available updates. If one is available, it will start downloading. You may need to press on "Download now" or "Install now." Once the files are downloaded, you'll be prompted to install it immediately or at a future, more convenient time (possibly overnight). So that's the story for July. Not too many functional or security updates for Pixel users while Galaxy users should install their July security update ASAP. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! Google releases July's Pixel software update with bad news for the Pixel 6a

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR Google is rolling out the July 2025 software update for all supported Pixel devices. Eligible devices include the Pixel 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Tablet, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, and 9a. Along with the security patch, this update starts the Pixel 6a's Battery Performance Program. It's July and a new software update is waiting for your Pixel phone. This month's update, unfortunately, comes with some bad news if you own a Pixel 6a. Google has announced that it is rolling out the monthly software update for July, along with the July security patch. This update features the build number BP2A.250705.008 and is available for the Pixel 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Tablet, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, and 9a. Interestingly, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were left off the list. Another notable tidbit is that the security bulletin mentions there are 'no Android security patches' in this month's update. July's update contains the following fixes: Display & Graphics Fix to improve smoother visual experiences in apps like Android Auto*[1] Fix to improve smoother visual experiences in apps like Android Auto*[1] Wi-Fi Fix to improve Wi-Fi connectivity stability and performance in certain conditions With that out of the way, here's the bad news. You may remember when we discovered that Google could force Battery Health Assistance to remain enabled, gradually lowering your battery's maximum voltage in stages. This is for the purpose of reducing potential battery overheating risks. Google later confirmed that it intends to issue 'a mandatory automatic software update to Android 16' in a Battery Performance Program support page for the Pixel 6a. Today's update happens to be the start of that rollout. Although this is the beginning of the Pixel 6a's Battery Performance Program, not all owners will see changes to their battery life. Google says 'only Impacted Devices will receive the battery management features.' If your device is considered to be impacted, the management features will only turn on after you've reached 400 charge cycles. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Verizon accidentally leaks Pixel July bug fixes before release of update

Verizon mistakenly releases info about the July Pixel Update, which was not released Wednesday as Verizon posted. | Image credit-Verizon The update includes the June 2025 security patch level and features software version BP2A.250705.008. The update fixes a couple of issues, one involving Display & Graphics and the other fixing Wi-Fi connectivity. Display & Graphics Improves smoother visual experiences in apps like Android Auto. Wi-Fi Improves Wi-Fi connectivity stability and performance in certain conditions. This is all we know about the July update for now. There is a chance that the actual update, when released, will carry more than just the two bug fixes that Verizon showed. And there is also a good chance that the actual release will include the July 2025 security patch instead of the June update, which was already released last month. If you'd like to keep checking yourself to see if the update for July has been made official, take your Pixel phone and go to Settings > System > Software update and follow the directions. We are getting close to the introduction of the upcoming Pixel 10 line, which is rumored to take place on August 20th with pre-orders to start shipping on August 28th. The phones in the series should include the Pixel 10 , 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and the foldable Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This year's Pixel 10 phones will be powered by the 3nm Tensor G5 application processor. This will be the first Tensor chipset designed by Google from the ground up. As a result, we expect to hear that Google has added some features to the Pixel 10 that are exclusive to the new phones. The Tensor G5 will be made this year by TSMC, which will be replacing Samsung Foundry. The latter had previously manufactured all of the previous Tensor chipsets starting with the very first one that powered the Pixel 6 series. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! Google releases Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1.1 to exterminate some bugs

When Google released Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 at the end of last month, the first beta release for the September Pixel Feature Drop transformed my Pixel 6 Pro into a new phone with better performance and improved battery life. Along with some improvements, the update also included some bugs that have been addressed in today's release by Google of Android 16 QR1 Beta 1.1 (BP31.250502.008.A1). If you have a compatible Pixel device, which includes the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro , Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9a, and Pixel Tablet series devices, go to Settings > System > Software updates . If you see the prompt for the update, tap on it and follow the directions to install it. The Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1.1 update is a minor release that exists to clean up some of the issues that were caused by the first Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 release: The navigation buttons would become unresponsive in the app drawer or task switcher (Issue #418395419) The progress bar in the media player on the lock screen doesn't reflect the place in media (Issue #419142109) Fixed a crash when trying to open effects in wallpaper (Issue #419063857) The settings app would crash after trying to open the battery menu (Issue #419125330) The lock screen date could get cut off when using a wide clock style (Issue #419145518) The search button has a different color when scrolling (Issue #419130323) The approve button in Device Admin settings is missing (Issue #419144521) Dark album labels appeared in the photo picker when in dark mode, impacting readability (Issue #419159231) The date wasn't appearing on the homescreen Fixed a fingerprint authentication failure on a multi-user Android device in certain low-power conditions The update continues to include the May 2025 Security patch level which was the same patch level included with the first Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 release. Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1.1 also includes version 25.13.33 of Google Play services, also unchanged from the first beta release. I am happy with the Android 16 QPR1 beta release, especially how much improved it makes my Pixel 6 Pro feel. If you've installed the update on your Pixel, let me know what you think about it and whether you've noticed any improvement in your phone's performance and battery life.

Google Pixel Phone Battery Problems: Google Explains Cause. Here's How To Fix It

Google updated its Pixel phones earlier in May with a routine update. Some users surprisingly found their battery life plummeting. Why would a simple tweaks and fixes update do this? Google has now commented and explained the fault. Here's how to fix it. Google Pixel 9 Getty Images The update arrived on May 6, with security patches for the Pixel 6 and later handsets. It was an update not to be skipped, because it had 28 security issues which were addressed in it. It also had some feature tweaks, such as a fix for a problem where the microphone wasn't recording well and a solution for problems caused when pairing by Bluetooth with selected smartwatches was impacted. So far, so normal. But soon after installing it, some Pixel users noticed terrible battery life, as reported by 9to5Google. Not only was the battery life dwindling much faster than usual, there were also reports of overheating issues. 'As always with battery issues following an update, much of this can boil down to perception. However, with the quantity of user reports circulating, it's hard to write this one off. The issue appears to be affecting all Pixel devices, from 2021's Pixel 6 up to the latest Pixel 9 generation,' the site commented. Now we know why. Talking to the same site, Google has explained that it wasn't its fault at all. 'Speaking to 9to5Google, Google says that battery issues being reported by Pixel owners with the May 2025 are due to an ongoing bug with the Instagram app and have nothing to do with the May update itself,' it said. It's good to know the reason but that doesn't solve the problem, of course. However, there's good news. It seems that the Instagram issue makes sense as a number of complaints about battery life commented that Instagram was 'eating up battery life'. And better news: the latest Instagram update fixes the issue. If you've been suffering with it, update Instagram pronto and it looks like it'll solve the problem.
