Your Pixel Watch could soon give you the same backup freedom as your Android phone (APK teardown)

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority A man pressed the digital crown of his Google Pixel Watch 3. TL;DR Google could soon let Pixel Watch users manually trigger backups. We've found code evidence suggesting Pixel Watches could soon get a 'Backup now' button in Settings, possibly removing the current requirement of having the watch connected to a charger during the backup process. The option is similar to the Backup now setting you find on Android phones. Google seems to be working towards making Pixel Watch backups a little less annoying. Currently, if you want to back up your Pixel Watch, you have to ensure it's connected to Wi-Fi and placed on the charger. The watch will then automatically start the backup process if you've turned on the backup option in Settings or during setup. So as it stands, you have no manual control over when your watch is backed up, and the automatic process requires you to connect it to a charger. We've now found evidence suggesting Google might remove these restrictions. Authority Insights story on Android Authority. Discover You're reading anstory on Android Authority. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. While sifting through the code in Google Play Services for Wear OS (version 25.28.34), we found a string referencing a new 'Backup now' option Google may be planning to add to Pixel Watches. The new option, likely presented as a button in the Pixel Watch settings when it goes live, is similar to the manual backup option on Android devices. That means you may soon be able to instantly trigger a backup on your Pixel Watch without waiting for the device to be idle and charging. Code Copy Text Backup now You might be wondering why only the Pixel Watch is expected to get the new backup option, while other Wear OS devices like Samsung's Galaxy Watch or the OnePlus Watch aren't. The reason is that Google Play Services doesn't support backups for all Wear OS watches. Samsung uses its own backup system via its companion apps, and OnePlus takes a similar approach through its OHealth app. So, the backup feature offered through Google Play Services appears to be specifically designed for Pixel Watches. The Pixel Watch 4 might charge via a wireless charging stand

The Pixel Watch 4 could use an entirely different charging system when its officially announced in a few weeks, according to leaked renders from Android Headlines . Rather than charging through fiddly pogo pins like past Pixel Watches, the renders suggest Google might finally adopt a simpler form of wireless charging. The renders show the new Pixel Watch charging in a stand on its side, while displaying the current charge, the time and an upcoming alarm, not unlike an Apple Watch. The stand reportedly powers up the smartwatch through conductive metal contacts on the left side, opposite the Pixel Watch 4's crown. The new charging contacts were visible in an earlier leak of the Pixel Watch 4, which also suggested the new smartwatch could be thicker than the Pixel Watch 3. Android Headlines reports that Google's decision to change how the watch charges could unlock several new benefits. The Pixel Watch 4 will reportedly have a "25 percent faster charging speed," room for new sensors and a design that's easier to repair than past Pixel Watches, thanks to a removable back plate. The new watch is also rumored to feature a brighter display and come in new colors. You can buy the Pixel Watch 3 in Polished Silver, Champagne Gold or Matte Black, in both 41mm and 45mm sizes. The Pixel Watch 4 will reportedly come in black, silver, gold and a blueish-gray "Moonstone." Google is expected to debut the Pixel Watch 4 alongside several new Pixel 10 phones on August 20. Wear OS 6 is here, but your Pixel watch isn't getting it first

TL;DR The Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic are the first smartwatches to ship with stable Wear OS 6. Samsung's new wearables run One UI 8 Watch based on Google's latest platform. It's unclear if all Wear OS 6 features, like dynamic color theming, are included on Samsung's version. Samsung has one-upped Google by being the first to roll out the stable version of Wear OS 6. The newly launched Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic are the first smartwatches to come with the latest version of Google's wearable platform right out of the box. While Google recently launched the first developer preview of Wear OS 6, the final version has yet to arrive on Pixel Watches. Google previously said this would happen in the 'coming months,' but we still don't have a clear answer for when Pixel Watch owners will get the new stable software. Meanwhile, Samsung is skipping the wait with its new Galaxy Watch 8 lineup, which runs One UI 8 Watch based on Wear OS 6. What exactly this means in terms of features is still a bit of a mystery. In the developer preview of Wear OS 6, we saw a slew of design upgrades thanks to the new Material 3 Expressive language. Wear OS 6 is full of curved buttons, fluid animations, bigger Quick Settings icons, and a dynamic theming system that matches your watch's interface to your chosen watch face. However, it's unclear how much of this is present in Samsung's One UI 8 Watch. That said, one feature confirmed to be part of One UI 8 Watch is the revamped Tiles UI. Instead of the usual circular or square layouts, Samsung now uses rounded rectangle tiles, something we also spotted in the Wear OS 6 preview. One UI 8 Watch also comes with a Featured Apps folder for quicker access to your most-used apps and multi-info tiles that let you stack widgets. Samsung tends to customize Wear OS with its One UI Watch layer, so some of Google's changes may be absent or tweaked to fit Samsung's style. There's no confirmation yet if dynamic theming or Google's preset color palettes (like Peony, Jade, and Indigo) are available on these new Galaxy Watches. Google is also developing useful features for Wear OS 6, such as Water Lock mode and a better always-on display experience. We hope to hear more about these as Samsung's new watches start reaching users or when Google shares additional rollout details for the software. We'll have more answers for you when we have the new smartwatches in for review.

How to watch Google's ‘The Android Show' and what to expect from Android 16 and Wear OS 6

Just a week ahead of I/O 2025, Google is hosting a special 'The Android Show' on May 13, where the company is most likely to unveil the next iterations of Android and Wear OS. The show will be live-streamed on YouTube, enabling Android enthusiasts from around the world to get first-hand information about all the changes and new features coming to Android 16 and Wear OS 6. The Android Show: I/O Edition will stream live on Google's Android YouTube channel, starting at 10:30 PM IST. The highlight of this show will be the next iteration of Android — Android 16. According to leaks and rumours, this version is expected to revamp the entire UI with more customisation options and the next generation of the Material UI design. Android 16, at least on Google Pixel smartphones, is rumoured to include features like a redesigned and highly customizable quick settings panel. It is also expected to introduce iOS 17-like Live Activities, allowing delivery and ride-hailing apps to provide real-time updates without occupying the entire screen. Additionally, Android 16 may introduce a new desktop mode — a feature likely limited to high-end devices — enabling users to dock their phone to a monitor and use it like a desktop computer, similar to Samsung DeX. We could also expect to see new privacy and security related updates to world's most popular smartphone operating system. We may also see some of the new AI experiences Google has been developing, along with deeper integration of Gemini across the operating system. Google is also expected to announce Wear OS 6, which will roll out to select Pixel Watches and Galaxy Watches in the coming days. Most of the UI changes are likely to remain exclusive to Pixel Watches, as brands like Samsung typically use their own custom skin on top of Wear OS. Lastly, we may also see new features for Android for Cars.
