'Outrageous' Phillies Trade Idea Brings $100 Million All-Star to Philadelphia
The Philadelphia Phillies are in a tight race at the top of the National League East with the New York Mets. The Phillies could look to make a blockbuster trade in order to address their need in the outfield and better their chances of winning the division. Nick Castellanos has been a consistent producer for the Phillies at the plate this year. Brandon Marsh is starting to play better as well. However, Max Kepler and Johan Rojas are both replaceable. In what could be a rather weak trade deadline for buyers, Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller proposed this "outrageous" trade that would bring Byron Buxton from the Minnesota Twins to the Phillies. CINCINNATI, OHIO - JUNE 19: Byron Buxton #25 of the Minnesota Twins celebrates after hitting a solo home run in the first inning of the game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on June 19, 2025 in Cincinnati, Ohio. More LaurenAbel is already in the big leagues and has shown he can be a good player in the rotation. However, when Aaron Nola returns from the injured list, there may not be a spot for Abel to help the Phillies this year. Trading him would still be a risky and aggressive move. However, the Phillies have their top prospect, Andrew Painter, in Triple-A, and he could still be a key player in their rotation in the future. Buxton is an All-Star and Platinum Glove Award winner. He is signed to a seven-year, $100 million deal through 2028. He is slashing .286/.352/.575 with 19 home runs this year. He could be a bigger help to the Phillies this season than Abel down the stretch. Buxton would also bring stability to an outfield that could lose Castellanos after next season, but the Twins are still in position to make a postseason run. However, if they think the chances are slim, they could be open to adding a player like Abel in exchange for Buxton, who could be a key part of their rotation for years to come. Buxton has dealt with injuries throughout his career, and the Twins may be ready to move on from his $100 million contract.
