Hasbro lifts annual revenue forecast on strong demand for "Magic: The Gathering" games
(Reuters) -Hasbro raised its annual revenue forecast on Wednesday, as the toymaker leans on strength of "Magic: The Gathering" games and cost-cutting efforts to weather the impact from mounting economic and tariff uncertainty. The Play-Doh maker saw strong demand for its "Wizards of the Coast" and digital gaming segments for a second straight quarter, as its pivot to digital gaming helped add younger customers even as it struggles to revive interest in toy business. For the second quarter, the company's revenue in "Wizards of the Coast" and digital gaming segment rose 28% due to momentum in "Magic: The Gathering", whose revenue surged 32% driven by growth in tabletop. Hasbro's turnaround efforts, including cutting 3% of its global workforce as well as diversifying its manufacturing and logistics footprint, have helped it reduce its reliance on China, from where it imports nearly half of its goods. It also has manufacturing hubs in Vietnam, India and Japan. The company expects annual revenue to be up mid-single digits in constant currency terms, compared with prior predictions to be up slightly. Monopoly maker Hasbro cuts 3% of total workforce amid higher tariff costs
By Ananya Mariam Rajesh (Reuters) -Toy seller Hasbro has cut 3% of its global workforce in its latest cost-cutting effort amid higher U.S. tariffs on toys from China. The job cuts amount to about 150 employees. According to its fiscal 2024 annual filing, the company had roughly 4,985 employees globally. "We are aligning our structure with our long-term goals," Hasbro spokesperson Abby Hodes told Reuters. Hasbro sources about half of its toys and games sold in the U.S. from China. The toymaker has been speeding up efforts to diversify sourcing and reduce exposure to China. Swirling worries about a global trade war after U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on trading partners have piled pressure on the toy industry that was already struggling with tepid demand. "Ultimately, tariffs translate into higher consumer prices, potential job losses as we adjust to absorb increased costs, and reduced profits for our shareholders," Hasbro's CEO Chris Cocks had said during an earnings call in April. The company also said it was reassessing logistics routes and manufacturing in the call. In December 2023, Hasbro said it would cut 900 jobs globally, nearly a year after saying it would reduce 15% of its workforce due to weaker sales. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the job cuts on Tuesday. The report added that the job cuts are part of a multi-year restructuring at Hasbro. The Play-Doh maker did not comment on the number of job cuts. In April, Hasbro beat estimates for quarterly results, as a shift towards its digital and licensed gaming businesses helped attract younger customers after it has struggled to drum up demand for its toy business for about three years now. Trial postponed for man accused of stabbing aunt ‘butcher style'
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man accused of stabbing his aunt to death in a home on Haley Street in December was in court Tuesday. His preliminary hearing was postponed until April, and that will be the first public airing of a grisly tale of abuse and violence. The murder weapon was a serrated construction knife and 28-year-old Christopher Kaulaity said he held it quote 'butcher style.' He compared himself to Norman Bates, the killer in the 1960 movie 'Psycho.' Court documents described the interview between sheriff's detectives and Kaulaity. It took place Dec. 7th, at a house on Haley Street. Kaulaity felt disrespected by his aunt, 45-year-old Maria Carmen Torrez who insulted him and tried kicking him out of the house. Kaulaity, who in the interview claims to be a homosexual, alleges she called him homophobic slurs. He describes his troubled life in the interview, saying he started watching porn at a young age, even becoming addicted to it. He attributed that to becoming a prostitute later in his life. He has a prior prostitution case from 2015 which was dismissed. In the documents, Kaulaity expressed a history of self harm, suicidal and homicidal tendencies, that he attributes to feeling unwanted and unloved in his life. During the interview, he described that fateful December day. He was going to feed his dog and Torrez used profanity and a homosexual slur, telling him to leave the house. Man says he stabbed his aunt to death after being 'triggered' by verbal abuse: court docs Instead, he went to his room and grabbed pepper spray and what he described to be a serrated construction blade, with a red and black handle. While Torrez was in the bathroom, Kaulaity kicked down the door, pepper sprayed her, putting her in a headlock and stabbed her around the neck area; in his words around seven times. In the interview, he said he went to town on Torrez…something that reminded him of when he played with PlayDoh as a child; he would make human figures and stab them with sticks. The documents allege Kaulaity found killing his aunt to be the right thing to do in order to protect other family members from the abuse. He also accepted his fate, the documents allege, saying there is no need to apologize to the family. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
