From victim to accused: Karnataka man claims murder attempt by minor wife; faces child marriage, Pocso charges
RAICHUR: Marriage, deep differences, mutual separation and arrest - all in three months. A 22-year-old agricultural labourer's dream life swung from purple-prose marriage to high drama on a bridge to now attending police inquiry - and a possible arrest - on charges of marrying an underaged girl. About 10 days after Thatappa alias Tataiah from Shaktinagar, near Raichur, alleged his wife Gangavva (name changed) pushed him off the Krishna bridge in the district into the river in a bid to kill him, the groom has been booked under Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. Police said the marriage took place in Raichur on April 18. However, it hit a rough patch within weeks and their families, too, were at daggers drawn, turning any reconciliatory efforts futile. While pretending to take his photograph on the bridge, the woman allegedly pushed him into the river. Thathappa fell into the river in a splash, but soon emerged overground unscathed. A video of the incident came into the public domain a few days later and became viral. Raichur Women's Police filed charges against Thatappa, his mother, and the bride's mother under the Prohibiiton of Child Marriage Act. Officials from State Child Rights Commission and women and child welfare department were notified. Subsequently, panchayat development officer Ravikumar of Devasugur gram panchayat filed a formal police report regarding the incident. The district's child protection unit has sent the minor to the district girls' home. Shashidhar Kosambe, a member of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said Thatappa and the minor lived together as a couple for a short period. Therefore, a case under Pocso should be filed against him. If not, the commission will initiate a suo motu case. Yadgir district child protection officer sent a letter to the Raichur DCPO requesting that a case be filed against the man and others under Child Marriage Act and Pocso.

Man sentenced to 20 years in jail, 4 months after sexually assaulting 2-year-old niece in UP
BAREILLY: Four months after a two-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by her maternal uncle in Rampur, a special Pocso court sentenced the latter to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict. ADGC Sumit Sharma said, "The uncle took the girl to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her. The survivor was found with injuries on her private parts. The uncle was arrested soon after. An FIR was filed against him under BNS section 65-2 (rape on a woman under 12 years of age) and the Pocso Act on March 13, 2025. During trial, the girl's father, demanded a severe punishment for the accused, while the defence claimed that he was innocent. The court of ADJ Ramgopal Singh (special Pocso court) on Monday found him guilty of assaulting the child and sentenced him to 20 years in prison, and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Ensure intimate photos of woman don't resurface on net: HC
Chennai: has directed the Union information technology ministry to ensure that the non-consensual intimate images (NCII) of a woman lawyer, which continue to resurface on the internet, are blocked and do not reappear. This court wants to wait for the standard operating procedure (SOP) to be evolved by the department concerned, and once the same is filed before this court, it can be acted upon and a judicial order can be passed," Justice N Anand Venkatesh said on Tuesday. The issue pertains to a plea moved by a woman lawyer seeking direction to the Union information technology ministry to take steps to remove nude photos uploaded on the internet by her boyfriend. When the plea came up for hearing on Tuesday, senior advocate Abudu Kumar Rajaratnam submitted that, as of date, the nude photo continues to appear on at least six brought to the notice of the court a press release issued by the Union home ministry emphasizing the necessity for every city to appoint a chief information security officer (CISO) to safeguard data and systems against cyber threats. Advocate A Kumaraguru, representing the Centre, submitted that the home ministry and the women and child welfare department were in the process of finalising an SOP, as suggested by this court in the earlier order dated July 15, and sought some more time to finalize it. State public prosecutor Hasan Mohamed Jinnah submitted that as per directions given by this court, the name of the survivor had been redacted from the FIR and all other documents. He further submitted that directions issued by Supreme Court in the Nipun Saxena case must be extended to all cases involving sexual offences against women. Jinnah said that, for the present, it is only confined to Section 228-A IPC (Section 72 of BNS) (disclosure of identity of victim of sexual offences) and to Pocso offences. The court adjourned the hearing to Aug 5.

Koraput: The special Pocso court in Jeypore on Monday convicted a 30-year-old man in a sexual assault case dating back to 2017, involving a minor girl from Koraput district. The court sentenced the man to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 under the Pocso Act .

24-yr-old man gets 20-year RI for minor's rape
Hyderabad: A man in Jagtial was sentenced to 20-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) case. The principal district and sessions judge (FAC) special sessions judge for Pocso Cases on Tuesday convicted 24-year-old Marripelli Sainath for the rape of a minor girl. He was also fined 2,000. The court granted compensation of 2 lakh to the survivor. A case was registered Sainath against under the POCSO Act on April 7, 2021. Jagtial superintendent of police (SP) Ashok Kumar said the case was investigated thoroughly by police and evidence was submitted by the Mallapur police station officers. Ashok Kumar stated there would be no escape for criminals as police would leave no stone unturned to arrest and prosecute them.
