South Africa: International Relations (IR) Committee Chairperson Is Unavailable for Media Interviews on National Security Allegations

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, has since the media briefing given by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, received requests from the media to comment on his removal from the position of Premier of the North West Province. Mr Mahumapelo is unavailable for media interviews and for comment on the grounds that, among other things, he is a Member of Parliament. Parliament has established processes and procedures for the Portfolio Committee on Police, the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, and the Standing Committee on Intelligence relating to the national security allegations. Furthermore, Mr Mahumapelo has a case in the North West High Court in Mafikeng and is suing for defamation against the Revolutionary Council and three others. Mr Mahumapelo received threats that if he did not get out of the position he would be killed. Threats on his life are due to political interference and evidence will be presented before the constituted committees as and when required. As a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress, the NEC will first look into the matter and decide on its approach as a collective of the ANC. Partygoers cower in horror 1am shooting

A block party in central Philadelphia quickly turned fatal after a mass shooting broke out between attendees. In footage captured by a Ring doorbell camera, partygoers are seen squirming around on the floor of a tiled porch, ducking and weaving to avoid the gunfire a mere arms length above them. Others are seen running for their lives down the street, ducking behind cars for safety. A man, dressed in all black and wearing a backpack, is seen moving up the stairs of the neighbouring porch and ducks, before peeking back out to the road to shoot. Two men leap from the huddle of people hiding to join in, firing in the same direction. Three men – aged 19, 23 and 24 – died at the 1500 block of South Etting Street in Grays Ferry just after 1am on Monday morning. It is not known what triggered the shooting, with a neighbour telling the Philadelphia Inquirer the gathering quickly grew in numbers and got out of hand. 'This is coward stuff,' Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told reporters. 'Just individuals just shooting randomly into houses, into cars, children out here. 'This is coward, wannabe thug stuff.' Police had already responded to the same block late Saturday into early Sunday and some arrests were made, the commissioner said. Commissioner Bethel said evidence indicated nearly 140 shots were fired. 'Reports of around 40 individuals may be out here, but those numbers can surge particularly when you're on a block of this size,' he said. 'People go in, they go out, they see the police officers, they back in, clearly there was something on the block.' Another 13 people were reportedly injured, including a 19-year-old who was hit twice in the head and remains in a critical condition at the University of Pennsylvania hospital. A 15-year-old girl and two 17-year-old boys were also injured. One person with a weapon has been taken into custody, police confirmed. It is unknown at this stage if they were involved.

low level assaults likely to never be investigated

So called minor crimes including petty theft and even low level assaults will likely never be investigated by police according to the boss of their own union. In May the Police Commissioner was forced to walk back a directive to staff that would have meant shoplifting allegations under $500 would not be investigated, petrol drive off below $150 and online frauds under $1000. But there was a u-turn after the Prime Minister and the Police Minister expressed concerns. But now, the Police Association boss says there is simply not enough resources to investigate everything. President of the NZ Police Association spoke to Lisa Owen. Tags: To embed this content on your own webpage, cut and paste the following: See terms of use.

Yet another blow for top cop after teenage son Charlie was tragically killed in hit-and-run at Schoolies

South Australia's most senior police officer, still reeling from the death of his son in a Schoolies hit-and-run, has revealed he is the subject of a misconduct investigation. South Australia 's Police Commissioner Grant Stevens confirmed he is being investigated over claims he accidentally discharged his firearm during a police operation in the 1990s. The revelation follows days of speculation over media reports on Sunday about a probe into an unidentified 'senior police officer.' Calling in to Adelaide radio station FIVEaa's David and Will on Wednesday morning, Commissioner Stevens said he wanted to be transparent. 'I thought I'd take the opportunity to come on and just maybe clear the air and put people out of their misery as to who the senior officer was that, 34 years ago, accidentally discharged their firearm while doing a police raid on a heroin dealer. 'The officer concerned was actually me.' The incident occurred during a raid on a suspected drug dealer's home in Adelaide's northern suburbs. According to Stevens, a bullet was unintentionally fired into the house during the operation and no one was injured. 'This is an incident that was managed in accordance with our procedures back at the time,' Commissioner Stevens explained. 'We were attempting to force entry into a house where a drug dealer was trying to get rid of drugs. And in the course of breaking a window to gain entry, I did discharge my firearm.' 'My supervisor was there at the time. I did the police report that was necessary, and it was reported to [the] Internal Investigations Branch on the day.' He firmly denied reports suggesting there had been a second accidental discharge of the gun. Commissioner Stevens and his family are still mourning the loss of their son Charlie, 18, who was killed in a hit-and-run while celebrating Schoolies at Goolwa Beach, south of Adelaide, in November of 2023. Mr Steven's son Charlie suffered significant brain damage in the crash and died at Flinders Medical Centre the next day, surrounded by family and friends. Dhirren Singh Randhawa, the 19-year-old driver of the car that struck Charlie, was given a suspended jail sentence. Randhawa was banned from driving for 10 years. Despite the crushing loss of their son, the Stevens family have been bravely advocating for organ donation and road safety. Mr Stevens, who has been SA's top cop since 2015, was one of four people nominated for the state's Australian of the Year in 2024.
