UK fighter jets intercept Russian spy aircraft over Baltic Sea

The planes intercepted and identified the Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft, which then left Polish airspace. "This is another case of provocative testing of the readiness of NATO countries' systems," the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command wrote on social media platform X. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Western military alliance ramped up its presence along its eastern flank, sending more fighter jets there and setting up ground-based air defences. The army said a pair of British fighters, stationed in Poland as part of NATO's so-called Air Policing effort, were scrambled before the Polish border was breached. The planes intercepted and identified the plane, and the incident is being analysed by the appropriate NATO commands, the army said. Poland scrambles jets in its airspace over Russian strikes on Ukraine
Poland and NATO nations scrambled fighter jets early Monday to secure Polish airspace following Russian airstrikes near its border with western Ukraine, authorities said. The Polish armed forces stated on X that these measures were to ensure security in regions next to at-risk areas over concerns that Russian stray missiles might veer into Poland. "In connection with the intensive air attack of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, activity of Polish and allied aircraft in the Polish airspace began in the morning hours," the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command said on Monday. The Polish military activated "all available forces and means at his disposal (including) on-call fighter pairs ... and ground-based air defence." No violation of Poland's airspace has been reported. "The Polish military is continuously monitoring the situation on Ukrainian territory and remains on constant alert to ensure the safety of Polish airspace. We thank the NATO Air Force for its allied support," the army command press release said. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian drones targeted the Sumy, Chernihiv, Kyiv, Poltava, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zhytomyr and Zaporizhzhia regions overnight on Monday.

Russian military helicopter violates Polish airspace to probe air defenses, Poland says
A Russian military helicopter of the Baltic Fleet violated Polish airspace on the evening of April 25, the Polish military command said. Polish military radar systems and civilian systems of the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency tracked the aircraft over Poland's territorial waters in the Baltic Sea. "The nature of the incident indicates that Russia is testing the readiness of our air defense systems," the statement of the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command said on X on April 26. "On-duty air defense forces and means remained on constant alert to ensure the security of Polish airspace," the command added. Poland has regularly scrambled jets since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion due to Russian missile and drone attacks on western Ukraine. In several cases, Russian projectiles have briefly entered the Polish airspace. Warsaw has also repeatedly accused Russian aircraft of airspace violations. On Feb. 11, a Russian SU-24MR military jet flew within Polish airspace in the Gdansk bay area of the Baltic Sea for over a minute, due to what the Russian side said was a failure of the navigation system. Last year, Polish Brigadier General Tomasz Drewniak told Radio RMF24 that Russia is likely testing Poland's air defenses after a suspected Russian drone flew into Polish airspace on Aug. 26 amid a mass attack on Ukraine.
