MCD on course to sell 2.5m tickets this year with sell-out Oasis and Robbie Williams shows

THE MANAGING DIRECTOR of MCD Productions, Denis Desmond, said today that MCD is on course for the second busiest year in its history to sell around 2.5m tickets in 2025. Mr Desmond said that business for MCD in 2025 'is very solid' and he said that the gross ticket sales from the 2.5m tickets would be between €212m to €225m based on average ticket prices of €85 to €90 per ticket. The bumper ticket sales for 2025 follows trade industry journal, Pollstar reporting that MCD last year sold a record €238.5m ($245m) in ticket sales. Mr Desmond said that the 2.5m tickets this year follows MCD's busiest year in its 45 year history last year which was boosted by sell-out shows by Taylor Swift and Coldplay. He said that ticket sales for 2025 'are very good' and that upcoming gigs by Dua Lipa and Olivia Rodrigo are sold out, adding that Croke Park shows by Oasis and Robbie Williams along with Electric Picnic are also sell outs. Mr Desmond said that MCD will sell slightly less tickets in 2025 than 2024 due to a reduced number of shows compared to last year. Beyonce has just finished a six date sold-out run at Tottenham Hotspur football stadium in London. Mr Desmond said that Beyonce would have come to perform in Dublin but was unable to do so due to stadium unavailability in the capital. He said: 'Beyonce is only touring Europe in June and Croke Park is not available until August because of the games being played. She would have come to Dublin otherwise. The economics of big shows at the moment means multiple dates at the same venue and there was nowhere available.' Advertisement He said that Beyonce played Croke Park eight years ago 'and I'm sure she will come back here again to perform in three or four years time'. Mr Desmond said that a series of gigs at St Anne's Park in Dublin have been very successful this Summer while gigs for Fairview Park – where Kneecap performed last week – 'are also doing very well'. Ticket sales for the 2025 string of gigs for Virgin Media Park in Cork have performed well for the likes of Macklemore, The Corrs, Snow Patrol earlier this month and Duran Duran next week, he added. 'We are in the third year of staging concerts at Thomond Park in Limerick and we have the Wolfe Tones and The Script there next month so business overall is very good.' MCD Productions is owned by LN Gaiety Holdings Ltd which is a joint venture between Mr Desmond's Gaiety Investments and Live Nation. Mr Desmond said: 'There is nothing better than a live show. You might have 10,000-20,000 people at a gig and they are all at one as they are all there for the person or people on the stage. You feel it and you come away from there, dare I say it, feeling alive.' Patrons coming to gigs are now inter-generational, he said. 'Rock n roll is over 60 years old now and you have parents with kids, grand-parents with their grand-kids.' Mr Desmond questioned why the likes of sporting events such as the upcoming US College and NFL football games receive State subsidy but live entertainment doesn't. He said: 'Live entertainment events generate a huge return for the exchequer in terms of the spend on restaurants, transport and hotel bednights.' Mr Desmond made his comments when asked to comment on new accounts for MCD Productions Ltd which show that it made a post tax profit of €3.53m in 2022.

Coldplay world tour making them biggest touring act of 2025 so far

The Coldplay world tour making them biggest touring act of 2025 so far, beating the likes of Shakira and Beyonce Coldplay are the biggest live entertainers on the planet so far this year having taken home a whopping £100m from concerts. Chris Martin's forty something Devon founded rock act has wiped the floor with other touring acts in 2025 being crowned as the biggest earners of 2025's Worldwide Tour - taking £100,868,947.68 Latina pop queen Shakira, 48, is 15 percent off Coldplay's figures (in second place) with the planet's biggest rapper Kendrick Lamar, 37, taking home 30 percent less than the Paradise rock act. Music analytics giant Pollstar has served up the tour revenues for the year, which prove the English band remains as popular as ever - even making over TWICE as much as Beyonce. ‌ They earned almost £5m per show (£4,803,637.29) from 21 nights playing to 1,205,449 fans on their current leg of The Music of the Spheres World Tour. Coldplay cemented their reputation as a band for the masses by selling tickets at an average price of less than £85 a pop (£83.65). ‌ They are well ahead of any other UK and Ireland acts as even the biggest names like Paul McCartney have only played short tours whereas they are on a monster stadium tour which earns them a fortune. By the end of the year Oasis will be up with Coldplay in terms of huge earnings. The Oasis Live 25 tour is expected to gross over £400 million from various revenue streams, including ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise, and more. Reports suggest Liam and Noel will bank over £50 million each from the 25 date tour. Shakira came in second at £85m, followed by Kendrick Lamar and SZA £73.91m, The Eagles £68.82, SEVENTEEN (£68.45), Trans-Siberian Orchestra £50.55M), Tyler, The Creator (,£49.5m, Dead & Company (£45.6m) , j-hope (£44.19m), and Beyoncé( £44.04m). Pollstar compiled the figures for the 2025 Mid-Year Top 100 Worldwide Top Touring Artists from shows between November14, 2024 to May 14, 2025. US acts dominated the first half of live show business events globally on the top 100 list. And after many years of over 40s dominating the biggest earning charts, younger talents and boy and girl bands are now making waves on the live front. ‌ Most legacy acts, like The Grateful Dead and The Eagles, earn more from each ticket often well over £200 a seat. After Coldplay it was an 82-year-old music icon showing the youngsters how to earn big - at number 29 in the global chart. Ex Beatle Macca was the next highest earning UK and Ireland act having generated £23,238,897.86 in revenue from just nine shows to nearly a quarter of a million fans. The average ticket price is less than a £100 for the Liverpudlian genius to deliver often three hour sets of iconic hits. Eighties metal act Iron Maiden made over £20m from 10 gigs to 387,180 fans, who only paid an average of 52 quid. Pop princess Due Lipa continues to ride high with her catchy pop hits coining in over £15m from 11 areas nights on her Radical Optimism Tour (£15,440,757.07). ‌ Hot on her heels was 2024's Gen Z darling Charli XCX - originator of the Brat Summer movement - who bolstered her bank account by £13,829,123.46 over 11 gigs. Irish act The Script showed their appeal remains strong taking home almost £14m from 38 gigs at a fee of less than fifty quid. Over sixties Brit soul act Simply Red walked off with £10m from nine gigs, while Rod Stewart was close behind with £9.2m. Geordie rocker Sam Fender, 31 wowed at 19 gigs taking in nearly £9m. Pollstar noted in their report: ' The Mid-Year Worldwide Touring Artists chart highlights a healthy live market, with its top three tours each grossing over $100 million well before the busiest concert season. ‌ 'Additionally, average revenue per show jumped 24.9% to $1,713,557, and per-show ticket sales rose 32.1% to 14,229. However, these average revenue increases were mitigated by a 5.5% drop in average ticket prices from $127.38 in 2024 to $120.43 this year, likely reflecting 2025's uneven economic conditions marred by trade wars, a volatile stock market, shaky consumer confidence, inflation, and mixed employment reports.' Pollstar, 'The Voice of Live,' is the premier trade publication dedicated to covering the worldwide concert industry. Pollstar data is the leading resource for the touring industry encompassing box office numbers, event listings, and contact directories. Pollstar produces a monthly magazine, weekly and daily e-newsletters, and produces the world 's largest gathering of live music industry professionals. Although The Music Of Spheres tour is the second biggest tour ever over the whole of it's duration over multiple years, Coldplay is still miles away from £1.74bn of from the Taylor Swift Eras Tour. ‌ 1. The rankings are measured between November 14, 2024, and May 14, 2025, with the venue now rubbing shoulders with some illustrious venues around the world, including California 's SoFi Stadium and Japan's Tokyo Dome, which both ranked inside the top-10. While this is the first time Marvel has been recognised inside Pollstar's top-10 venues. The acknowledgement also comes 12 months after the stadium broke into the 2024 Billboard Boxscore rankings after it was ranked the top venue in the world for its top-grossing concert revenue figures during October. Despite boasting a much bigger capcity, Marvel topped the MCG for ticket sales to be ranked as the fifth highest-grossing stadium in the world Marvel was first opened in 2000 and is currently owned by the AFL. It cost approximately $460million to build and last year underwent a $225m upgrade, which was funded by the Victorian Government. The refurbishment works included the addition of two new video screens situated under the stadium's roof as well as amendments to the stadium's infrastructure, to enhance fan experience. Over the past year, many fans have flocked to the venue to watch both cricket and footy, but the venue has also hosted some massive concerts. Luke Combs recently sold out the venue with two shows in February, with 111,200 fans attending the concert. A month later, US rock band Green Day took to the stage at Marvel for a gig in March, with 60,000 fans in attendance. Coldplay hosted four gigs at Marvel back in November, while the Weeknd and PINK all played last summer and plenty more big events are coming to the stadium to celebrate its 25th anniversary. In October and November, Oasis will play three concerts at the venue as part of their reunion tour, while Metallica and Lady Gaga are also due to play at the venue before the year is out. 'Marvel Stadium is incredibly proud to have been recognised in Pollstar's Mid-Year Top 50 Stadiums worldwide,' AFL general manager of Marvel Stadium Scott Fitzgerald said. 'To be named among the best stadiums on the global stage is a true testament to the investment and innovation that has gone into evolving Marvel Stadium into a world-class, 365-day multi-purpose venue that is delivering unforgettable experiences for fans, artists, and athletes alike.' 'Events like these would not be possible without the support of our world-class partners including Disney, Live Nation, Frontier, Ticketmaster and Delaware North who work tirelessly to attract the best in global entertainment and ensure our fans have amazing guest experiences at our venue. 'Melbourne is a city that lives and breathes sport and live entertainment, and we're proud that Marvel Stadium is continuing to shine on an international stage and creating experiences that rival the world's best.' Marvel sat fifth behind Mexo City's Estadio GNP Seguros, the SoFi Stadium in California, Allianz Parque in Brazil and the Autordromo Hermanos Rodrigues in Mexico for gross sales. It also comes as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham are now set to travel Down Under for a pre-season tour and are due to play at Marvel on June 11.

The Docklands venue ranked in the top 10 in the 2025 Pollstar Mid-Year Top 50 Worldwide Stadium rankings for both tickets and gross sales. Marvel Stadium was ranked the highest Australian venue in Pollstar's top 50 list, joining the likes of Mexico's Estadio GNP Seguros, California's SoFi Stadium and Japan's Tokyo Dome as international venues in the top 10. Measured between November 14, 2024 and May 14, 2025, Pollstar ranked Marvel Stadium as fifth in the world for highest-grossing stadiums and seventh for highest stadium ticket sales. During that period, more than 111,200 fans packed Marvel Stadium to see US country artist Luke Combs, 54,600 flocked to see punk pop rockers Green Day, and 108,100 rocked out to Pearl Jam.
