ICC's AGM: Olympic Qualifying, 32-Team T20 World Cup And USA Cricket Lifeline

Cricket will make its Olympic return in 2028 (Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images) The International Cricket Council's all-powerful board met on Saturday in Singapore as part of the governing body's annual conference. Several big ticket issues were discussed at length before final decisions on Sunday, which ends the four-day AGM. Regional rankings are set to largely decide which teams make the cut for the men's competition played from July 12-29 in Pomona, 30 miles east of Los Angeles. Under the proposal, the top ranked team in Asia, Oceania, Europe and Africa will automatically qualify alongside host U.S, who would represent the Americas. The final spot will be determined by a qualifier. Allocation via the ICC's T20 rankings at a cut-off date had been deemed as the likely outcome, but as I reported recently qualifiers had received a groundswell of support. There have been concerns over costs and logistics amid cricket's congested calendar, but in what appears a compromise, a single qualifier is likely to ensue. The West Indies - comprised of various nations in the Caribbean - will likely have their own regional competition to determine which country will compete for the qualifier. The T20 World Cup is set to determine the women's Olympic spots. It is not known whether the U.S. will receive an automatic spot. It is hoped that more teams will compete in the cricket competitions for Brisbane 2032. Cricket will be played at the Los Angeles Olympics (Photo by INDRANIL MUKHERJEE/AFP via Getty ... More Images) An expanded 32-team T20 World Cup has been mooted as a working group looks into cricket's formats and major competitions. The six-man working group will be led by New Zealand's Roger Twose and comprise bosses from the power nations India, Australia and England. Twenty teams competed at last year's T20 World Cup and that number will remain the same for next year's edition after 16 teams had participated in the events from 2016-22. But there is a desire for an expanded T20 World Cup after the recent qualification of Italy underlined cricket's depth is increasing beyond traditional footholds. There does not appear any sentiment to increase the number of teams at 50-over World Cups, which will be a 14-team competition in 2027 after being limited to just 10 in the previous two editions. A radical plan to split Test nations into two divisions will also be looked at by the working group. Promotion and relegation along with how funds would be distributed loom as sticking points. India are the defending T20 World Cup champions (Photo by) USA Cricket Set To Avoid Suspension For Now Embattled USA Cricket is set to avoid immediate suspension of its ICC membership and be given three months to address its governance issues. The governing body was put 'on notice' at last year's AGM due to the long-time governance issues, with its funding controlled by the ICC. If deemed to still be non-compliant then it would be suspended and ultimately face expulsion as a member. There is a lot of scrutiny over the state of American cricket with the Los Angeles Olympics just three years away and and the U.S. being a target market for the ICC give USA Cricket chair Venu Pisike and CEO Johnathan Atkeison have been at the meetings in Singapore.

Olympic cricket at LA 2028 set for 9am start times

LA 2028 organisers have slated matches at the Olympic cricket tournament to start at 09:00 in the morning to cater for lucrative television audiences in of the major factors behind cricket's return to the Games after a 128-year hiatus is the desire of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to tap into a lucrative South Asian media rights and sponsorship market. The six-team T20 tournament, featuring both men's and women's teams, will begin on Wednesday, 12 July - two days before the opening ceremony - with all matches staged at a venue which will be constructed at the Fairgrounds in will be two games played daily at Pomona - located 30 miles from the athletes' village in Los Angeles - starting at 09:00 and 18:30 Pacific Daylight matches will be shown at 21:30 and 07:00 India Standard Time (17:00 and 02:30 British Summer Time). The evening fixtures at the ground in Pomona will be played under floodlights. Kit McConnell, who oversaw cricket's return to the Games after a 128-year hiatus as the IOC's sports director, told BBC Sport organisers considered "core cricket markets in the subcontinent" when planning the tournament. "The vision the International Cricket Council (ICC) has outlined for us is aimed at providing the best players and the best teams on the Olympic stage," McConnell said."There's three years to go but now we're very excited about where cricket is, what it will bring to the Games and equally what the Olympics can offer to cricket and its global expansion as well." How will the Olympic cricket tournament work? BBC Sport understands the competition structure for cricket at the Olympics has now been agreed following meetings between the ICC, IOC and LA 2028 six participating teams will be divided into two groups of three with each team playing each other will then play two sides from the other pool, apart from those who were ranked in the same corresponding example, the winners of Group A will play the second and third-placed teams in Group B and from all four matches will then be used to determine final rankings with the top two sides playing in a final to decide the gold and silver medals. The teams who finish third and fourth will play off for matches will be played on 20 and 29 July with the women's and men's tournament set to run in separate slots rather than being played ICC is set to discuss how teams will qualify for LA 2028 at their Annual General Meeting in Singapore, starting on 17 members want T20 rankings to determine which teams go to Los Angeles but others have expressed a preference for qualifying England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland have held talks to form a new entity called GB Cricket to oversee a team for LA. No repeat of New York pitch issues The IOC have given assurances there will not be a repeat of the pitch controversy which blighted showpiece games at last year's T20 World Cup in New York, which the USA 34,000-seat temporary stadium in Eisenhower Park looked impressive, but the drop-in pitches used for matches during the initial group stage, including the high-profile fixture between India and Pakistan, were subject to the venue in New York, which returned to use as a public park, the ground in Pomona is set to remain a cricket facility for permanent usage by Indian Premier League and Major League Cricket franchise owners Knight reported by The Cricketer,, external the IOC and ICC are in negotiations with the Knight Riders over installing a square as opposed to using drop-in surfaces."We're very conscious about the importance of the field of play and in the case of cricket, the pitch," McConnell added."Now that we have finalised the venue, we can move forward with all of those plannings in a more concrete sense."I don't think it's only the T20 World Cup. I think every cricket match has commentary about the pitch and what type of play it suits."

Push For Olympic Qualifiers Gathering Steam Ahead Of Singapore Cricket Meetings

Cricket will be played at the Los Angeles Olympics (Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times via Getty ... More Images) Momentum is building for T20 qualification tournaments - not rankings - to determine which countries make the cut for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, with the issue to be debated at the International Cricket Council's upcoming meetings in Singapore. Cricket's 128-year exile will end with the six-team men's and women's competitions to be played at a temporary venue in Pomona, 30 miles east of Los Angeles. While the venue was announced in April, it has remained an unknown over how teams will qualify. Allocation via the ICC's T20 rankings at a cut-off date had been deemed as the likely outcome, but it is learned that qualifiers - which would include top performing Associate nations - is being strongly considered amid several different proposals. The meetings during the annual conference in Singapore from July 17-20 are set to be pivotal. But a final decision might not be reached until the next quarterly meetings later in the year. The U.S, whose men's team produced a barnstorming performance at last year's T20 World Cup on home soil, as host nation are likely to get an automatic slot although possibly in just one gender. USA beat Pakistan at the T20 World Cup (Photo by Matt Roberts-ICC/ICC via Getty Images) The low number of six teams per gender for the Olympics has irked some smaller cricket nations who would not be able to qualify through a rankings system. The IOC have tried to slim down numbers at the Olympics and a total of 90 athlete quotas have been allocated for each gender in cricket, which means every team can name a 15-member squad. There is influential support for qualifying tournaments, which have provided great drama and spectacle in rival sports such as basketball and its truncated game of 3x3. 'We should really make the most of cricket being in the Olympics and have qualifying tournaments instead of rankings, which don't make sense in terms of trying to develop the sport,' Zimbabwe Cricket chair Tavengwa Mukuhlani, an ICC board director and part of the Olympic working group since 2020, told me. 'The qualifying tournaments should be for everyone and not just Full Members (cricket's 12 nations who receive the most power and funds). "It's fairer and if you look at other major sports, like football and basketball, you see some amazing things happen where underdog nations qualify.' Proponents of rankings argue that it is cost efficient and negates the logistical difficulties of organizing qualifiers amid cricket's increasingly cramped schedule. A combination of rankings and qualifying tournaments, a template used in some other Olympic sports, is another option. Puerto Rico's players celebrate with the ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics after defeating Lithuania ... More during the 2024 FIBA Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Photo by RICARDO ARDUENGO/AFP via Getty Images) 'Discussions will be focused on what is the best option and there is the cost factor to consider, but inclusivity has to be a factor too and it would be great to showcase a curtain raiser before the Olympics,' Sumod Damodar, one of the three Associate member representatives on the Chief Executives' Committee, told me. 'We need to make sure the right decision is made for cricket because the sport wants to be part of Brisbane 2032 and beyond. We don't want to be in situations where every four years we are begging for inclusion.'
