Elgar is the soundtrack to VE Day celebrations — this is his story
With his magnificent moustache, tweed suit and noble air, Edward Elgar looked every inch the proper English gentleman of his day. And as the composer of the Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 — from which comes Land of Hope and Glory, now almost an unofficial national anthem — his music seemed to sum up the spirit of an all-conquering imperial Britain, full of rousing sentiment and flag-waving patriotism.
