Adrian Segecic confident a strong season with Portsmouth will help him realise his FIFA World Cup dream
Former A-League star Adrian Segecic has backed his chances of playing for the Socceroos at next year's FIFA World Cup – if he has a strong season in the English Championship with his new club Portsmouth. Despite often having to settle for an impact role off the bench, Segecic starred for Sydney FC last season, with his 13 goals enough to a be co-winner of the A-League Golden Boot with Adelaide United striker Archie Goodwin. Segecic's form also led to him signing last month with Portsmouth on a three-year deal. The 21-year-old attacking weapon has so far impressed in Pompey's pre-season campaign in both finding the back of the net and setting up goals for his teammates. Segecic hopes to continue that form during Portsmouth's Championship campaign, which kicks off on August 9 against Oxford United at Kassam Stadium. Five-star at Farnborough. 🌟 — Portsmouth FC (@Pompey) July 17, 2025 'If I'm playing here and doing well then one thing is going to lead to the other,' Segecic told the website. 'The World Cup's definitely a target for me … the World Cup would be amazing. To go and play at a World Cup at my age would be a dream, especially for Australia. 'We've qualified, so it's just about being able to make the squad. Playing for Portsmouth and doing well here gives the chance for that to happen. '(I) want to play in the Championship. It's one of the hardest leagues in the world. 'If I'm able to show I can handle it, I think it shows how good how I am. 'I will need to be good technically to cope with that, and if I'm doing well in the Championship, I think there's a good chance (of going to the World Cup).' A strong start to the season will also help Segecic's chances of being picked in the Socceroos squad for September's two friendly games against New Zealand in Canberra and Auckland.

Pompey working 'urgently' on new signings
Portsmouth sporting director Richard Hughes said it has been a "tough [transfer] window so far" for the Blues but work continues to bring new faces striker Adrian Segeric, 21, was Pompey's first signing of the summer when he joined from A League side Sydney FC last month, but despite links with former loanees Abu Kamara, of Hull City, and Cardiff's Alex Robertson, Pompey have yet to complete another told BBC Radio Solent: "We want to bring in players to add to the group, we are working deliberately and urgently behind the scenes to get that done."We keep moving forward, we'll keep trying to get deals done, and keep trying to make the squad as strong as it can be."While other Championship clubs have parachute payments or big transfer windfalls to spend, Hughes added: "That's not how we operate, it's really tough but we are not going to lose faith in what we do. We're going to stick to the way we operate and we'll see the benefits of that at the end of the window."There are three or four deals that we are working really hard on, and we know there is a lot we have to factor in. We're hoping to have bodies through the door sooner rather than later."We're in a secure position, there are a couple of gaps, we are really happy with the players we have, it's just about adding to them. It's a project people want to be part of."Click here to listen to Richard Hughes' interview in full via BBC Sounds.

Rangers told Abu Kamara signing 'difficult' as incoming Conor Coady leaves incredible impact on an old pal
Pacey wide man Kamara is said to be on Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell's radar. Portsmouth's transfer chief has confirmed their interest in reported Rangers target Abu Kamara but admits Hull City's current financial predicament will make a deal 'difficult' to do. The England U20 international spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Pompey, where he impressed with eight league goals and 10 assists before returning to his parent club last summer. Fellow English Championship side Hull have been smacked with a transfer embargo that will be in place until January 2027 because of their financial irregularities and Rangers are said to be among a number of teams looking to exploit that situation to land winger Kamara, 21, on a cut-price deal. Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell are looking to add more pace to the ranks at Ibrox and are closing in on a £2.5million deal for Sheffield Wednesday star Djeidi Gassama. However, Pompey sporting director Rich Hughes has offered a different take on how Hull's current situation will affect the way they are able to operate in the transfer market. He told The News: "It's always really tough to do it and I think you take Hull as a sort of working example - they've gone under an embargo and I think the natural reaction would be they have to sell players. "But, also, you can't lose sight of the fact that they may not be able to replace them and I think that's probably the flip side of that coin - so that becomes really difficult. "So, he's Hull's player, we completely respect that, and is he a player we'd be interested in? Yes, absolutely. Is it one that we'll be able to do? We have to wait and see and see how that pans out. "Again, when you talk about these unknown factors, you look at Hull's situation and, again, there's an incredible amount of grey areas in that sort of set up to get a deal done." Meanwhile, incoming Conor Coady has been praised for leaving a lasting impact on one of his former teammates at Wolves. The 32-year-old - who is in advanced talks over a move to Ibrox from Leicester - left the Molineux side in 2023 after captaining them for the duration of their four previous seasons in the English Premier League. But his talkative nature on the field has helped current Wolves centre-back Toti Gomes take his game to a new level. Speaking to the club's website, the Portugal international said: "I was always someone that likes to talk on the pitch, on the training ground, but I didn't have a big voice before, and I learned that. "I remember the first captain that I had, Conor Coady, he was always telling me, especially us being centre backs, we need to have the voice. "We are the players at the back, and we see the whole game in front of us. "So, we need to have the voice, and it's very important, the communication – having someone like that in the team is going to help you. "Having someone that's going to talk with you, right or left instructions, it's always good."
