Pope Leo laments 'diabolical intensity' of Middle East conflicts
Pope Leo said on Thursday that conflicts in the Middle East were raging with an unprecedented "diabolical intensity" and appealed for greater respect for international law, in comments to Catholic bishops and aid agencies operating in the region. At a meeting in the Vatican, the pontiff said countries in the region were being "devastated by wars, plundered by special interests, and covered by a cloud of hatred that renders the air unbreathable and toxic." "Today, violent conflict seems to be raging... with a diabolical intensity previously unknown," he said, adding that the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza was "tragic and inhumane."

Pope Leo laments ‘diabolical intensity' of Middle East conflicts

At a meeting in the Vatican, the pontiff said countries in the region were being 'devastated by wars, plundered by special interests, and covered by a cloud of hatred that renders the air unbreathable and toxic.' 'Today, violent conflict seems to be raging... with a diabolical intensity previously unknown,' he said, adding that the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza was 'tragic and inhumane.' Leo, elected on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis, appealed last month for Israel to allow more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. He did not name Israel in his remarks on Thursday. The US-born pope also did not directly address the recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran that also saw the United States bomb suspected Iranian nuclear facilities but he called for countries to show better respect for international law. 'It is truly distressing to see the principle of 'might makes right' prevailing in so many situations today, all for the sake of legitimizing the pursuit of self-interest,' he said. 'It is troubling to see that the force of international law and humanitarian law seems no longer to be binding, replaced by the alleged right to coerce others,' Leo added.

Pope Leo appeals to Iran and Israel not to pursue vengeance after war
VATICAN CITY, June 25 (Reuters) - Pope Leo appealed to Iran and Israel on Wednesday not to pursue vengeance after 12 days of war, which the U.S. joined with airstrikes in support of Israel to target Iran's uranium-enrichment facilities. "May all logic of oppression and revenge be rejected, and may the path of dialogue, diplomacy, and peace be chosen with determination," the pontiff said in remarks at the end of his weekly audience in St. Peter's Square.

Dust Off Your Econ 101 Notes
Regarding 'Javier Milei's Gift for Pope Leo' (Inside View, June 16): Andy Kessler's brilliant explication of the value of free markets neglects to explore the most important outcome of them, individual freedom. Unrestrained by central planning, citizens can exercise their choice as to what they like and what they are willing to pay for it. The essence of price discovery is when the aggregation of these decisions is reflected in the marketplace. The first lesson in almost every introductory microeconomics course is 'Consumer Choice,' how an individual will decide how much of his resources he'll devote to what good based on his preferences. Central planning corrupts that, restricting individual freedom and creating scarcity of goods and distortion of prices. It likewise breeds a climate for corruption, favoritism, fraud and waste. Perhaps the meddling grandees with Ph.D.s should review their Econ 101 notes.
