Ireland hit tonne in Test mismatch against Portugal

Ireland recorded their biggest ever Test victory, scoring 16 tries in a complete mismatch against Portugal in Lisbon. Shorn of 17 squad members on Lions duty, interim head coach Paul O'Connell's charges ran riot against a Portugal team out of their depth and looking nothing like the outfit that impressed at the 2023 World Cup. The final score read 106-7 to the visitors, who led 54-0 at the break, with debutants Hugh Gavin and Shayne Bolton scoring twice each, and fellow new cap Alex Kendellen getting on the scoresheet. Leinster wing Tommy O'Brien added another two on his second cap, while Stuart McCloskey, Thomas Clarkson, Craig Casey, Cian Prendergast (2), Calvin Nash, Ciarán Frawley and Ben Murphy also crossed with the final score coming from a penalty try to break the tonne for the first time ever. Out-half Jack Crowley landed 12 conversions on the night. After passing a relatively stiff test in difficult conditions against Georgia in Tbilisi last weekend, Ireland would have hoped for more of a challenge from Os Lobos, ranked 18th in the world, as the sides met for the first time. But it was more akin to a middle of the road training session than a full-blooded contest as Ireland scored off their first possession through Ulster centre McCloskey. The tries came thick and fast at the sun-kissed Estádio Nacional do Jamo, the venue where Celtic won the 1967 European Cup, with Portugal, who lost captain Tomás Appleton to a nasty leg injury in the 21st minute, outclassed throughout. By that point the score was 28-0 with Connacht's Gavin scoring after a lineout move in the 22, with Tommy O'Brien and Shayne Bolton running in tries that started in the Irish half. Portugal full-back Nuno Sousa Guedes had a try disallowed for a forward pass before Ireland crossed again, this time O'Brien coming off his wing to take a pop pass from Crowley. Leinster prop Clarkson ran over for another moments later after Casey tapped a quick penalty in midfield and Bolton grabbed his second following up on a hopeful punt with two Portugese defenders falling asleep in the backfield. With the TMO communications failing midway through the half, there was some confusion with the match clock but there was still time for Gavin, who was promoted to the starting XV when Jamie Osborne was called up by Lions coach Andy Farrell on Friday, to bash over for his second. It was more of the same on the resumption with captain Casey finishing off good work by Bolton and Munster flanker Kendellen, one of three debutants. Prendergast, who missed out last weekend due to a stomach bug, got Ireland's tenth try, taking Tom Ahern's pop pass on the short side after a smart lineout switch between Gus McCarthy and Jack Boyle. Simon Mannix's charges did manage to avoid a whitewash when flanker Nicolas Martins took advantage of a break by winger Manuel Cardoso Pinto to score, out-half Hugo Aubry converted. Ireland emptied the bench but there was no let-up for the hosts, who beat Fiji and drew with Georgia less than two years ago. Nash finished off in the corner when Ireland moved the ball quickly from a scrum, while he turned provider for Frawley moments later. Prendergast added a second with a fine assist from Casey, while Kendellen powered over for his debut try soon after. Portugal brought down a tryline-bound maul in overtime with referee Adam Leal awarding a penalty try to bring a miserable evening for the hosts to an end. The winning margin surpassed the 83-3 victory over USA in New Hampshire back in 2000 with 106 points and 16 tries also records for the senior team. Ireland next return to the Test arena when they take on New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November. Portugal: Nuno Sousa Guedes; Simão Bento, Vincent Pinto, Tomás Appleton (capt), Manuel Cardoso Pint; Hugo Aubry, Hugo Camacho; David Costa, Luka Begic, Diogo Hasse Ferreira; Antonio Rebolo de Andrade, Pedro Ferreira; David Wallis, Nicolas Martins, Diego Pinheiro. Replacements: Abel Cunha, Pedro Santiago Lopes, Martim Souto, Guilherme Costa, Francisco Almeida, Vasco Baptista, António Campos, Gabriel Aviragnet. Ireland: Jimmy O'Brien; Tommy O'Brien, Hugh Gavin, Stuart McCloskey, Shayne Bolton; Jack Crowley, Craig Casey (capt); Jack Boyle, Gus McCarthy, Thomas Clarkson; Tom Ahern, Darragh Murray; Ryan Baird, Alex Kendellen, Cian Prendergast. Replacements: Tom Stewart (for McCarthy 52), Michael Milne (Boyle 52), Tom O'Toole (Clarkson 52), Cormac Izuchukwu (Murray 60), Max Deegan (Baird 52), Ben Murphy (Casey 60), Ciarán Frawley (McCloskey 52), Calvin Nash (O'Brien 52).

Roma target loan move for Evan Ferguson

SERIE A GIANTS Roma are hoping to sign Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton this summer, according to multiple reports. Italian outlets, along with transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, report that Roma are working on a loan deal for Ferguson, to which Brighton are receptive. Injury has contributed to the stalling of Ferguson's career after his breakout year of 2023, when he became the first teenager to score at least 10 Premier League goals across a calendar year since Wayne Rooney did so in 2005. With his 23/24 season cut short because of injury, however, Ferguson failed to make an impact under new manager Fabian Hurzeler and went on loan to West Ham for the final four months of last season: a move that did not work out, with Ferguson failing to score and not once completing more than 45 minutes in a single game. Advertisement Roma, now coached by former Atalanta coach Gianpiero Gasperini, finished fifth last season under Claudio Ranieri, who led a stunning late-season charge to qualify for next season's Europa League. Their main central striker option at the moment is Ukraine's Artem Dovbyk, who joined from Girona last season, scoring 12 goals. Elsewhere, former Irish u21 captain Joe Hodge is reportedly set for a move to Portugese side C.D. Tondela. Hodge remains a Wolves player, though spent last season on loan at Huddersfield in League One, making 27 league appearances. Though Hodge is on Heimir Hallgrimsson's radar, he failed to make the cut for the more experimental squad selected for June's friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg. Tondela won the Portuguese second division last season, and will thus compete in the top flight against giants such as Benfica, Sporting and Porto next season. Meanwhile, former Irish international striker David McGoldrick has signed for Barnsley on a one-year deal. The League One side are coached by McGoldrick's former international team-mate, Conor Hourihane. Thirty-seven-year-old McGoldrick dropped down the divisions two years ago to join his local team, Notts County, in League Two, for whom he starred. 'I've known 'Didzy' for many years and his football intelligence, technical ability and eye for goal speak for themselves,' Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane told his club's website. 'Beyond that, he's a top character and someone I know our younger players will look up to. Bringing in someone of his calibre gives us a real boost.' Barnsley finished 12th in League One last season, having reached the play-offs in each of their prior two campaigns after relegation from the Championship in 2022. Elsewhere, Irish women's international Chloe Mustaki has completed a move to Nottingham Forest following her exit from Bristol City. Forest compete in the second tier of English women's football. 'I'm really excited to be here', said Mustaki. 'There's huge ambitions at the club and I'm looking forward to being part of that. 'I like to think I have a lot of experience that I can bring to Nottingham Forest this season both on and off the pitch, so I'm excited to get started.'

Unfortunate and shocking tragedy: Congress expresses grief over Ahmedabad plane crash

New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Congress on Friday extended its deepest condolences to all families bereaved and devastatingly affected by the crash of AI-171 on June 12 that left 241 people dead. In a post on X, Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on Friday, 'The Indian National Congress extends its deepest condolences to all the families bereaved and so devastatingly affected by the crash of AI-171 yesterday. We had hoped and prayed while awaiting confirmation of fatalities. The confirmation is grim news and the INC joins the nation in our collective anguish and grief over this most unfortunate and shocking tragedy,' the post read. On June 12, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress MP and leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi expressed their grief following the plane crash. Sonia Gandhi, in a statement, said, 'I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with the families of the passengers and the crew. The visuals are most heart-wrenching. The entire country is overtaken by grief and is praying.' Rahul Gandhi urged Congress workers to help with rescue and relief efforts. Rahul Gandhi said, 'The Ahmedabad Air India crash is heartbreaking. The pain and anxiety the families of the passengers and crew must be feeling is unimaginable. My thoughts are with each one of them in this incredibly difficult moment. Urgent rescue and relief efforts by the administration are critical - every life matters, every second counts. Congress workers must do everything they can to help on the ground.' The AI-171 flight that was operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on June 12, 2025 carrying 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portugese nationals and one Canadian national, crashed near the Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport into a resident doctor's hospital shortly after take-off. Miraculously, one person has survived the deadly crash, the airline authorities said, adding that the survivor was a British national of Indian origin. A formal investigation has been launched by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) into the deadly crash of Air India flight 171 that killed 241 people onboard, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed on Thursday. The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours. (ANI)

Dodge rip-off resorts and unearth bargain holiday spots with our interactive map

The pound has strengthened against most currencies in the last year, giving families more spending power if they're heading overseas. Make sure you're heading to one that offers good deals The world's biggest rip-off destinations and those bucketlist spots perfect for a bargain break have been revealed. When it comes to holidays, nothing sours the poolside mojito quicker than the feeling that your cash is disappearing too quickly. Thankfully, the Post Office has looked into where in the world the British pound delivers the most value for money this year. We've put the biggest bargain cities and outrageous rip-offs resorts on an interactive map, so you can book armed with all of the facts. If you're looking for the most bang for your buck, then head to the Algarve. The Portugese coastal resort is a huge favourite with Brits, who take advantage of cheap, regular flights from across the UK to flock to the southern region en-masse each summer. It's basket of holiday goodies cost £58.95, 1.6 per cent less than in 2024. This is due to the rock-bottom cost of meals and drinks. The average cost of a three-course meal for two with wine in Albufeira weighed in at £40.33 – the lowest recorded across the 47 destinations surveyed (figure 9) and one third the cost in New York (£128.27). The Algarve is one of 19 resorts or cities that got cheaper this year than last, according to Post Office research. Others to do so include Delhi, India; Phuket, Thailand; Spain's Costa del Sol and Prague in the Czech Republic. If you're keen to stay in Europe, then Prague is a good bet. Far more than just stag-dos and strip clubs, the former Soviet city is enriched by a huge amount of history, art, and music. The Czech capital's basket of holiday goods cost £75.92 this year, a significant price fall of over 20 per cent compared to 2024. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the biggest deals can be found a little further away from the UK, although bargain-hungry holidaymakers will have to factor in the cost of getting to these destinations when choosing where to go. Cape Town in South Africa is the second cheapest destination looked at this year, with a basket of essentials costing £59.84. This is a great destination for Southern Hemisphere wine buffs as a glass of grape costs just £2.07; a fifth of the price it'll set you back in New York. Japan's capital city, Tokyo, has been massively popular with Brits over the past year, thanks to the very favourable exchange rate. A glass of wine and a bottle of beer can be purchased there for the equivalent of just over a fiver. One destination to keep an eye on is Delhi. At £69.52, prices in the Indian city have dropped 10.7 per cent. Although alcohol prices there are a little on the steep side, soft drinks, water and food won't lighten your wallet too much. At the other end of the scale, New York is the most expensive of 47 destinations surveyed, with a barometer total of £167.85 - a rise of 15.6 per cent year-on-year. Not only will you have to spend upwards of £7 for a beer in the Big Apple, you'll be expected to tip generously on top of that. The eye-watering continues in Hawaii, the second most expensive destination on the list and the home of £9.18 insect repellent, and in Nice, France. Head to the French city, and you'll find yourself being stingy with the suncream, as a bottle costs close to £17. While the world has been in turmoil since Donald Trump returned to the White House (and perhaps was before), sterling remains strong against many other currencies. Over three-quarters of Post Office's top 30 currencies – including the euro and most other European currencies – have weakened since last March. This could provide holidaymakers with a big incentive to choose destinations where sterling will provide more 'bang for their buck. Appetite for traveling remains high and is growing. Three-in-five (60 per cent) of Brits surveyed about their holiday plans for the coming year told Post Office Travel Money that they will be travelling abroad – up from 51 per cent who were asked the same question a year ago. Almost three-quarters (73 per cent) of them will holiday in Europe and most (95 per cent) will be making a repeat journey to a European destination. Although a big majority are planning to get away this year, most share a desire to keep things as cheap and cheerful as possible. Travelling away from busy periods is regarded as the best way to make travelling abroad more affordable, with two-in-five holidaymakers prepared to swap peak season travel for cheaper times of the year. More than a quarter of those questioned say they will book cheaper accommodation (27 per cent), take fewer holidays (27 per cent) or go to a destination that costs less (26 per cent).

Diogo Jota mourned by family, Portugal's PM in hometown wake

Portugese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro joined members of Diogo Jota's family for a private wake in the Liverpool footballer's hometown in northern Portugal following his death alongside his brother Andre Silva in a car crash in Spain. Jota's longtime agent Jorge Mendes was also seen joining the family that included his wife Rute Cardoso, who had married the footballer just weeks earlier. Mr Montenegro spent almost half an hour with the family before leaving without making a statement. Hearses carrying the bodies of Jota and his brother left for Gondomar near Porto yesterday evening from the morgue of Puebla de Sanabria, near where the Lamborghini the brothers were travelling in had veered off the road after midnight yesterday. Police said they suspected a tyre had burst. A public wake is expected to take place at a chapel in Gondomar from 4pm and a funeral tomorrow at a church nearby at 10am local time, the office of Gondomar's mayor said. The death of forward Jota at the age of 28 has jolted the world of football, with messages of homage pouring in from former teammates, clubs, national leaders and fans. Outside Liverpool's Anfield stadium fans left flowers, scarves and handwritten notes, many from children. "I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the (summer) break," Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah said on Instagram. "Teammates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back," he added. Football clubs including Paris St Germain, who have several Portugal internationals in their squad, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid observed a moment of silence during training for their matches at the Club World Cup in the United States. Jota's manager at Liverpool, Arne Slot, said in a statement yesterday that his thoughts were with his family. "My message to them is very clear - you will never walk alone," het said. "For us as a club, the sense of shock is absolute. Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us. He was a teammate, a colleague, a workmate and in all of those roles he was very special," the Dutchman added. In Gondomar, a town of about 160,000 people in the Porto metropolitan area, residents were struggling to come to terms with the sudden death of a local hero. At the Diogo Jota Academy in Gondomar - whose motto is "It's not important where we come from, but where we are going" - people placed candles, flowers and scarves and shirts from the various clubs he played for and from the Portuguese national team in tribute to the player. Jota opened the academy in 2022 for children aged 6-9 at the Gondomar Football Club where he himself played for ten years as a child. It was at Gondomar's high school that he met his wife. They began dating aged 15 when in the same class and she became a pillar in his life. When they were 19, they moved to Madrid together, when Jota was transferred from the small Portuguese club Pacos de Ferreira to Atletico Madrid. "Besides being his girlfriend and best friend, I'm his number one fan," she told the newspaper 'A Bola' at the time. The couple have three young children. Jota was making his way back to Liverpool by car after he was told he should avoid plane travel for up to six weeks following lung surgery to address a fractured rib, his physiotherapist Miguel Goncalves told broadcaster Now late. He said Jota was recovering well from the pneumothorax surgery and that he had planned to take a ferry to the UK from Spain.
