Hawks acquiring Kristaps Porzingis in 3-team trade with Celtics, Nets
The post Hawks acquiring Kristaps Porzingis in 3-team trade with Celtics, Nets appeared first on ClutchPoints. Kristaps Porzingis is on his way out of Boston, as the Celtics have officially traded the 7-foot-2 big man. Reports indicate that he's heading to the Atlanta Hawks in part of a three-team deal. Advertisement The Hawks are acquiring Kristaps Porzingis from the Boston Celtics in a trade that includes the Brooklyn Nets, according to insider Brett Siegel. Porzingis will now play alongside star guard Trae Young, giving Atlanta a new weapon for next season. 'BREAKING: The Atlanta Hawks are acquiring Kristaps Porzingis from the Boston Celtics in a 3-team trade with the Brooklyn Nets, league sources told Clutch Points.' Atlanta is receiving Kristaps Porzingis, along with a second-round pick, per ESPN's Shams Charania. The Nets receive Terance Mann and the No. 22 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, while the Celtics get Georges Niang and a second-round selection. 'BREAKING: Boston, Atlanta, and Brooklyn are finalizing a three-team trade that sends Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Hawks, Terance Mann and Atlanta's No. 22 pick to the Nets, and Georges Niang and a second-rounder to the Celtics.' Advertisement This trade comes just a day after the Celtics had already dealt Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Hawks become the next team to acquire another Boston star, as the Celtics are seemingly making big changes with Jayson Tatum expected to miss the entire season next year. For Atlanta, the Hawks bring in a big man who can help stretch the floor as well. When healthy, Kristaps Porzingis is one of the most electric players in the league. However, his health is a bit of a concern. During his two seasons with Boston, Porzingis missed 65 total games out of a possible 164. So, the Hawks will hope for a healthy Porzingis in Atlanta. In the two years with the Celtics, the Latvian star averaged 19.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 50.2% from the floor and 39.2% from beyond the three-point line. Kristaps Porzingis trade grades after stunning Hawks-Celtics deal
The post Kristaps Porzingis trade grades after stunning Hawks-Celtics deal appeared first on ClutchPoints. Less than a day after trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, the Boston Celtics made another deal. In a three-team deal involving the Atlanta Hawks and the Brooklyn Nets, the Celtics offloaded Kristaps Porzingis. In return, Boston received Georges Niang while Terance Mann and the No. 22 pick in this year's NBA Draft went to Brooklyn. Advertisement The move was a necessity for the Celtics, whose payroll was simply too much to justify. However, Boston now has some flexibility when it comes to their bottom line moving forward. Despite the trade, Celtics guard Jaylen Brown is still in trade rumors as teams try to pry Boston's secondary star away from them. Here are our trade grades for the Porzingis deal for the Hawks and Celtics. Atlanta Hawks: A- Entering the offseason, the Hawks had a $25 million trade exception they wanted to use. After a disappointing season in 2024-25, Atlanta has some big holes to fill. One of them was their center spot. Onyeka Okongwu replaced Clint Capela in the starting lineup after an injury took him out for a stretch. However, the spacing left Trae Young having to do a lot of heavy lifting offensively. Advertisement To bring in Porzingis and only give up Mann and Niang and a draft pick is a fantastic outcome. The former NBA champion projects to be another premier pick-and-roll partner alongside Young. While Okongwu continues to develop his outside jumper, the seven-footer can operate as a floor spacer and shot blocker alongside him. While Porzingis' health is a question mark at this point in his career, he is well worth the risk. His arrival also helps keep Young in Atlanta as the team shuts down rumors surrounding their star. A starting five featuring Young, Dyson Daniels, Zaccharie Risacher, Jalen Johnson, and Porzingis is a well-balanced defensive monster. This is the second Celtics trade made out of necessity, not desire. All eyes are on Boston, which needs to cut its payroll in order to avoid the second apron and put themselves in position to rebound into contention when Jayson Tatum returns. That being said, their return is far less than they would have liked. Advertisement Georges Niang can play off of Joe Mazzulla's bench, but doesn't come close to replacing Porzingis' absence. If there wasn't enough already, this move puts even more pressure on Al Horford to hold down the middle of the Celtics' defense. The 39-year-old might be the last rotational big left on Boston's roster next season if they don't retain Luke Kornet. At the end of the day, Boston's moves to add Holiday and Porzingis had the desired result. The Celtics won a title behind one of the most dominant starting fives in modern NBA history. However, the bill came due and Boston simply could not accept going that far into the luxury tax without their First Team All-NBA forward. How does one earn a roster spot with Boston's Bill Walton All-Stars? Time well spent and a title in short order.
A scattered few were mercenaries of the most helpful variety. Some had been underestimated and discarded elsewhere, arriving here with scars. Others were acquired because they appeared — and proved to be — The Missing Piece. Most appreciated the passion of the Boston sports scene. Many reveled in it. All of them, in this century anyway, in this ridiculous run of 13 major professional championships since 2001, learned their way around a duck boat. When they return to Boston, it is obligatory to call them 'Champ.' Advertisement This topic popped into mind recently for a few reasons. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up It's been more than a year now since Bill Walton (left) is just one of many athletes to come through the Hub and play a big role in winning a title. Stan Grossfeld/Globe Staff Walton came to mind often over the last several weeks while watching his former teammate Rick Carlisle, who spoke so eloquently about Walton last May upon news of his death, guide the underestimated Pacers to loved the way Carlisle's Pacers played the game. Walton is also connected to the other reason this was on my mind. The Celtics, mere days after their reign as NBA champions officially came to an end with the Thunder's Game 7 victory, began the brutal but necessary business of paring a couple of eight-figure annual salaries from their payroll in order to escape the punitive 'second apron' tax and roster-building penalties. Advertisement Related : It's a shame that Holiday played just two seasons here, because the guy is a born Celtic in all the admirable ways, an amalgam of Dennis Johnson and K.C. Jones, while also answering the question, 'What would it look like if Marcus Smart embraced calm rather than chaos, and also could shoot?' Porzingis was the Walton of this Celtics era. He loved being here, the fans loved him, he had great perspective due to all he has been through, and he gave a champ a superpower when healthy. It's both wild and fitting that Walton played one more game as a Celtic than Porzingis (118-117, playoffs included). Holiday and Porzingis are first-ballot Walton All-Stars, based on our loose parameters of being a short-timer (let's say three seasons in Boston or less) but a major contributor to a champ. There are actually more players that meet the qualifications than you might be able to name without the assistance of one So many, in fact, that we'll keep our acknowledgements today to those who contributed to the aforementioned 13 champions — six Patriots teams, four Red Sox, two Celtics, and one Bruins — since the turn of the century . . . or the arrival of Tom Brady, a far more relevant cultural event. Advertisement Sticking with the Celtics, their other banner-raising team this century had its share of Walton All-Stars. James Posey was the ideal sixth man for the '08 champs, playing lockdown defense, knocking down big 3-pointers, and being an A+ chemistry guy, which included having a different handshake for every teammate. Posey was here just one season, as was big man P.J. Brown. I'll pause while you happily replay his crucial jump shot in Related : How about that other winter team that took up some space of its own in the Garden rafters with the 2010-11 Stanley Cup victory? The Patriots have an abundance of these players. Veterans wanted to come here and board the two-decade dynasty in pursuit of a ring. Darrelle Revis, who proved one man can be an island for the '14 defense, and Chris Long, who won a Super Bowl with the Pats in '16 and then beat them as an Eagle in '17, are textbook examples. Related : The 2004 Patriots — their best Super Bowl winner in my opinion — brought in Corey Dillon, who rambled for a franchise-record 1,635 rushing yards. There are many more that could have been mentioned by name. But not everyone gets a salute in the first class. Perhaps we'll dig into the pre-2000 Walton All-Star honorees at some point. Kristaps Porzingis' Message to Trae Young Turns Heads After Celtics Trade
Kristaps Porzingis' Message to Trae Young Turns Heads After Celtics Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Atlanta Hawks officially acquired veteran center Kristaps Porzingis to team up with star guard Trae Young in a three-team trade involving the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics sent Porzingis as part of a salary-clearing deal that brought in Georges Niang and allowed Boston to avoid luxury tax penalties. Advertisement Porzingis's two seasons in Boston were a mix of highs and lows, with both high-level impact and injury setbacks. He arrived in June 2023 and ultimately helped the Celtics to their 18th NBA title that same season. However, the big man endured health setbacks in his second year, as he was limited to just 42 games throughout the 2024-25 regular season, averaging 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.5 blocks. Shortly after the trade, Hawks star Trae Young took to X to welcome the 7-foot center. Porzingis responded to the post hours later with a message of his own: '🤝 @TheTraeYoung lets gooo,' hinting at positive synergy between the two stars. Fans quickly voiced their reactions online. Hawks fans projected optimism with messages Advertisement 'Let's get this number 1 seed guys 🥳🥳,' one fan wrote. 'We ready demon, let's have a great and healthy year big bro,' another fan added. 'Let's go KP ring #2 OTW 🙌👏🔥🔥🔥🔥,' a third fan mentioned. A skeptic brought up Porzingis's past friction over playing styles—'Didn't you hate playing with Luka? You'll hate Trae,' the fan wrote. One Celtics supporter also expressed gratitude to Porzingis—'Thank you for everything! 🫡☘️' Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis (8)© Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Porzingis arrives in Atlanta with a reputation as a unicorn on both ends of the floor. His ability to stretch the defense, protect the rim and offer veteran leadership makes him a high-upside addition. If he stays healthy, his skill set could significantly elevate the Hawks' ceiling and complement Young's dynamic playmaking. Advertisement With both players publicly embracing one another, the new pairing could become a defining partnership in Atlanta's push for contention. The Celtics have made moves to get cheaper in recent days, with the trade of Porzingis to the Hawks one of multiple moves Boston has made or will likely make to reshape their roster in the face of what would have been a historically expensive roster and tax bill.
