Over 50 per cent children stunted in 63 districts across 13 states and UTs: Parliament data analysis

Wasting, which indicates acute malnutrition, was highest in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, at 17.15 per cent, followed by Bijapur in Chhattisgarh and Mon in Nagaland . Madhya Pradesh has multiple districts with stunting above 50 per cent, including Shivpuri , Khargone and Guna . Assam also has multiple districts with stunting above 50 per cent, including Cachar , Darrang , and South Salmara-Mankachar . Arunachal Pradesh's Tirap and Upper Subansiri also figure among the worst hit. Karnataka's Raichur and Bagalkot , Rajasthan's Salumbar , and Gujarat's Narmada further have high prevalence of stunting. Among Union Territories, Mahe in Puducherry had a stunting rate of 57.38 per cent, the highest among UTs. Responding to another question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur had stressed that nutrition is not just about food but involves factors like sanitation, safe drinking water, and education. "As malnutrition requires a multi-sectoral approach, it is crucial to address the issue in a convergent manner," she said in a written response. She added that the government is implementing 'Mission Saksham Anganwadi' and 'Poshan 2.0', an umbrella scheme that integrates anganwadi services, 'Poshan Abhiyaan', and adolescent nutrition programmes. 16k anganwadi centres to be upgraded to playschools
1 2 3 4 5 6 Ranchi: Around 16,775 of the total 38,523 anganwadi centres across the state are being upgraded into resource based 'playschools' to strengthen early childhood care and education. The project which began in 2023 for children aged 3 to 6 years and jointly funded by the central and the state govts is targeted for completion by March 2026. The first phase of the upgradation includes 6,850 centres. Each anganwadi centre under this scheme is being allotted Rs 1 lakh to strengthen facilities, study materials, and child development infrastructure. This includes provision for LED TVs, clean drinking water via filters, development of nutrition gardens, toys, child-friendly furniture, and creative learning materials such as children's artwork. The tender process has been concluded and supply of materials to the centres is already underway. Talking to TOI, director of social welfare department, Kiran Pasi, said, "A key feature of the initiative is the development of a new curriculum aligned with NEP-2020, placing a strong emphasis on holistic childhood care and foundational learning. Anganwadi workers and assistants are also being trained to implement the curriculum effectively. Centre to roll out biometric-based registration under Poshan 2.0 from August 1
Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annpurna Devi on Saturday (July 12, 2025) announced that beneficiary registration under the Centre's Poshan 2.0 scheme will be carried out through biometric authentication, starting August 1. State to get new centre for women, child development

"The new regional centre will cater to states in the eastern region -- Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal -- which collectively host over 7 lakh functionaries, spread across 115 districts, under flagship schemes such as Mission Shakti , Mission Vatsalya, and Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0," the minister said in a statement. "Previously, training needs of these four states were partially catered through regional centres located in Guwahati and Lucknow, posing logistical challenges for many functionaries due to long travel distances. The new regional centre will also offer the Advance Diploma in Child Guidance and Counselling and will facilitate better accessibility for front-line functionaries in these Eastern region states," the ministry said on Wednesday.
