Heavy metal: Iron Maiden's 50 years celebrated on new UK coins
The Royal Mint in the UK has unveiled a commemorative coin celebrating 50 years of Iron Maiden is "spawned to be released". The heavy metal band has joined the likes of Queen, Elton John and David Bowie in the Royal Mint's 'music legends' coins series. Designed by Iron Maiden's artist Albert "Akirant" Quirantes, the design features the band's mascot Eddie as well as numerous hidden Easter eggs referencing the band's career, albums, and world tours. Quirantes said the coin was the "perfect fusion of metal on metal". "We expect it will prove to be a collector's piece that's highly sought after by both numismatists and passionate rock fans alike." ADVERTISEMENT It's estimated Iron Maiden has sold in excess of 100 million albums including Number Of The Beast, Killers and Powerslave. Each featured mascot Eddie on the album artwork. Iron Maiden's manager Rod Smallwood said having Eddie on an official UK coin was a continuation of of the band mascot's "incredible odyssey". "We've been on stamps, beer bottles, plane tails and now legal tender." Smallwood said the detail packed into the design was "superb". "There are little nods to virtually every chapter of our journey as a band. We're truly honoured that The Royal Mint has chosen to commemorate 50 years of Iron Maiden in such a unique way." The coins were available to buy from the Royal Mint from Tuesday (local time) for NZ$30 for a £5 denomination coin, and NZ$49 for a colour version. The collection also included a £200 available for NZ$11,541.

Iron Maiden's insanely good Run For Your Lives Tour is a hit-packed metal masterclass with mind blowing visuals

They kicked off the UK leg of their Run For Your Lives world tour on Saturday to mark the band's 50th anniversary. 9 Iron Maiden are celebrating their 50th anniversary but still play like rockers a quarter their age Credit: Olivia Fry - The Sun 9 Bassist Steve Harris keeps the rhythm in front of the sold-out crowd at Birmingham's Utilita Arena Credit: Olivia Fry - The Sun At one point, guitarist Janick Gers — who is two years off 70 — had his foot up on an amp that was higher than his shoulder. Then he was spinning the guitar around his neck before pointing it towards the sold-out crowd at Birmingham's Utilita Arena like a weapon, as bassist Steve Harris provided rhythmic perfection next to him. Eddie, the band's mascot, also put in a shift and was stalking across the stage left, right and centre as the metallers thrashed through their 17-song set. Ahead of the shows, frontman Bruce Dickinson promised fans the concerts would 'put a smile on your face and a cheer in your throat'. And Maiden did that in spades. As I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with head-banging fans of all ages, a shirtless man ran from the sound deck towards the front of the stage and screamed: 'I would die for metal.' And I don't doubt it, as the band whipped the crowd further into a frenzy with tracks including Wrathchild, Number Of The Beast, Powerslave and Two Minutes To Midnight. The set list is packed with proper treats for Maiden fans. The band kicked off the show with Murders In The Rue Morgue, then later played Killers — tracks they haven't performed live since their Ed Hunter Tour 26 years ago. Visually, the show was among the most impressive I've seen recently, opening with the backdrop of the old East London streets some of them grew up in. Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson, 66, comes 13th in elite fencing tournament… only losing to Olympic gold medallist Classics such as Run To The Hills had the crowd screaming so loudly their energy seemed to push the band on more. Bruce then dressed as a prisoner sprinting up a staircase, running from a ghost, while Hallowed Be Thy Name played. Epics such as Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son and Rime Of The Ancient Mariner showcased the group's musicianship, before they kicked off the first song of the encore, Aces High. There were mind-blowing visuals of Spitfire battles blasting around behind them. Vocally, Bruce was on fire. 9 The band's mascot Eddie stalks the stage Credit: Olivia Fry - The Sun 9 The band have sold just over a million tickets for the European leg of their tour Credit: Olivia Fry - The Sun And given he barely stood still, the show was a masterclass for rising stars who can only dream of emulating the energy and talent he has perfected on stage over the decades. As well as roaring rock, the band made a point of paying tribute to their longtime drummer Nicko McBrain, who retired from touring in December. And they took the opportunity to introduce new man Simon Dawson, who thrashed the skins so hard from start to finish I'm amazed he didn't break his kit. Every show on Iron Maiden's UK and Ireland run is sold out, with the band selling just over a million tickets for the European leg. If you're lucky enough to have a seat at one of the shows, strap yourselves in and get ready for the ride of your life. It is insanely good. DANNY IN THE WIGHT MOOD FRESH from his honeymoon in Greece, The Script's Danny O'Donoghue was still on cloud nine ahead of the group's performance at the Isle of Wight Festival. In our exclusive backstage chat, Danny also said his new sober lifestyle had helped him become a better musician, adding: 'I used to get so nervous at festivals. 'There were just so many famous people around and I thought if I got drunk, I'd find some courage. But that never happened. 'I'd have a few beers and l go into myself and want to leg it from the festival. "Although I've made these changes, very few others have, so I still find people I know asleep under tables at these things.' They were joined at the festival by acts including Stereophonics, Busted, Razorlight, Amy Macdonald and Sting – who was spotted jumping on the ferry with punters to get to the island. Last night, Justin Timberlake, Jess Glynne, Texas and Olly Murs rounded off an epic event. Iron Maiden Is In The Middle Of A Huge Comeback On The Charts
Iron Maiden's Powerslave and Somewhere in Time return to four U.K. charts each, with sales and vinyl ... More reissues fueling the comeback of both '80s classics. Iron Maiden (v.l. Adrian Smith, Nicko McBrain, Bruce Dickinson, Steve Harris, Dave Murray) on 20.08.1986 in Bochum. (Photo by Fryderyk Gabowicz/picture alliance via Getty Images) Iron Maiden helped shape the sound of heavy metal decades ago, and while many of its peers from that era have long since broken up or stopped making music, the British rock band is far from done. The legendary act still produces new work, and it also regularly sees older efforts be rediscovered by fans, both new and longtime. That's exactly what's happening again this week in the United Kingdom, where two classic albums from Iron Maiden's discography surge back onto the charts. Iron Maiden pushes both Powerslave and Somewhere in Time to a number of U.K. charts. Both full-lengths are back on four different tallies, which is a major comeback. For a group that's been around for more than 40 years, appearing on multiple lists at once with not one but a pair of decades-old titles is a huge accomplishment — one that most artists from that era can only dream of. Between the two comeback collections, Powerslave is the better performer. The set manages to climb back into the top 10 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, landing right at No. 10. The same effort also earns top 40 placements on two other rosters – the Official Vinyl Albums list, where it comes in at No. 17, and the Official Physical Albums chart, where it returns at No. 49. While just shy of a top 40 appearance, Powerslave does manage to reenter at No. 45 on the Official Albums Sales chart. Somewhere in Time isn't quite as successful as Powerslave, but it still manages to settle on four rankings this week – and it's living inside the top 40 on two of them. The project returns to the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart at No. 14, and reappears on the Official Vinyl Albums list at No. 34. The heavy metal offering falls just outside that range on the remaining two tallies on which it can be found presently, settling at No. 68 on the Official Physical Albums ranking and No. 73 on the Official Albums Sales chart. Looking back historically, Powerslave has enjoyed greater overall chart success than Somewhere in Time. The earlier release between the two has reached the top 10 on all four of the charts it's back on this frame. It even peaked as high as No. 2 on both the Rock & Metal and Vinyl Albums lists. Somewhere in Time should also be noted for its healthy performances across a number of rankings, though it's only ever broken into the top 10 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart and peaked inside the top 40 on the vinyl ranking. The set missed that mark on both the physical and albums sales lists. These comebacks appear to be largely driven by recent sales and special offers. Both Powerslave and Somewhere in Time were discounted and offered in collectible vinyl editions on Amazon U.K., which may have prompted fans to snap them up in large enough numbers to turn them into chart successes once more. Powerslave originally dropped in September 1984 and marked Iron Maiden's fifth full-length studio effort. Somewhere in Time followed two years later in 1986 as the band's sixth. Both albums were commercial hits upon arrival, with the former reaching No. 2 and the latter peaking at No. 3 on the U.K. Albums chart, just barely missing out on being the biggest projects in that nation for a time.
