Livingston constituency MP Gregor Poynton today challenged opposition parties to explain why they oppose a new EU trade agreement that will deliver significant benefits to Scottish businesses and the wider economy. Speaking during Cabinet Office questions in the House of Commons, Mr Poynton highlighted how the deal will help world-class producers in his constituency, including Glenmorangie whisky distillery and Paterson shortbread bakery, as well as the broader Scottish salmon industry which has already welcomed the agreement. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The West Lothian MP emphasised the global reputation of Scottish produce, stating that the new agreement would help Scottish businesses "grow and export world class products" including premium whisky bottled in his constituency and traditional shortbread baked locally. Livingston MP Gregor Poynton has challenged opposition parties to get behind the new EU-UK Trade Deal Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds, Paymaster General and Minister for the Cabinet Office, confirmed the new Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement will make trade with the EU "easier and cheaper" for a wide range of Scottish produce including Paterson shortbread, Lorne sausages and Scottish seed potatoes. The Minister described Mr Poynton as speaking "very powerfully for his local businesses" and confirmed that the agreement represents a significant economic opportunity for Scotland and the wider UK economy. Crucially, the Minister stated that any party seeking to reverse the agreement would need to explain why they want to remove £9 billion worth of annual economic benefits by 2040 from the UK economy. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mr Poynton questioned why the SNP, Conservatives and Reform UK have "set their face against" a deal that has been warmly welcomed by the Scottish salmon industry and other key Scottish exporters, particularly given the substantial economic benefits it will deliver. The exchange comes as the government seeks to rebuild and strengthen trade relationships with the EU following years of uncertainty, while ensuring Scottish businesses can compete effectively in international markets. The SPS agreement is expected to reduce bureaucratic barriers and costs for food and agricultural exports, making it easier for Scottish producers to access the large EU market and maintain their competitive edge in international trade.

Gregor Poynton MP Slams SNP Scottish Government's Delay on East Calder Medical Centre
Gregor Poynton MP, Member of Parliament for the Livingston constituency, this morning spoke in the House of Commons chamber during Scotland Office questions about the continued dither and delay from the SNP Scottish Government regarding the East Calder Medical Centre. Mr Poynton has been campaigning alongside local residents and the community campaign group for a new health centre. The current facility, originally built to serve 4,500 patients, now serves 14,000 — a figure projected to rise to 19,600 by 2028. The existing infrastructure is unable to meet current demand, and the situation will only worsen as the population grows. Speaking in Parliament today, Mr Poynton said: 'This UK Labour Government is delivering the largest budgetary settlement in the history of devolution — an extra £9.1 billion to invest in Scottish public services. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Yet the SNP Scottish Government continues to squander opportunity after opportunity and waste the public's money. Gregor Poynton MP, Foysol Choudhury MSP, Councillor Danny Logue and the East Calder Medical Centre Campaign Group 'Will the Minister join me in urging the SNP Scottish Government to get a grip and invest in projects that matter to our communities, like the East Calder Medical Centre, which has yet to materialise after years of SNP dither and delay?' In response, the Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray, said: 'I absolutely join my Honourable Friend in that call. 'And may I pay tribute to his tenacious campaigning to see East Calder's new medical centre delivered. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'The Spending Review generated £5.8 billion in health-related Barnett consequentials for Scotland. The Honourable Member is right to stand up for his community in East Calder. 'And I ask the SNP — where has all the money gone?' Mr Murray also highlighted similar challenges in his own constituency, stating: 'I am 10,000 GP places short in my own constituency. It's something the SNP needs to take on seriously.' Following the exchange, Mr Poynton commented: 'The SNP Scottish Government must take the calls for the East Calder Medical Centre seriously. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'How can we continue to build houses in areas that don't have the infrastructure to support them? 'I continue to back the calls from the local campaign group for the funding to be released so they can begin planning the new health centre. 'I urge Angela Constance to speak to her colleague Neil Gray — the Scottish Government has the funds now, so they should start using them.'

Second teenager killed on railway line named
The second teenager who died on a railway has been named as 16-year-old Jordan Everett, 16, who dreamed of becoming a pilot, his family said. Jordan was killed along with Joshua Myers, also, 16, near Poynton railway station in Cheshire. Police had been called to the line following reports of a casualty on the tracks at around 10.09pm on July 3. British Transport Police (BTP) said paramedics also attended, but both boys were pronounced dead at the scene. BTP said the incident is not being treated as suspicious. In a tribute, Jordan's family said: 'Our cherished son, grandson and brother, you were so loved by your family and all that knew you. 'We will always miss you and you will forever be in our hearts. 'Jordan was inquisitive and adventurous and had already started building his flying hours to achieve his dream of becoming a pilot. 'He was loving, loyal, caring and thoughtful and we will cherish the memories we have of our boy. 'We are truly devastated and heartbroken as a family with the loss of our beautiful Jordan. 'Our lives will truly never be the same again.' Earlier, the parents of Joshua Myers, paid tribute to their son in a statement released through BTP. They said: 'Our son, Josh is incredibly precious to us and we are so proud to be his mum and dad. 'He had no idea how loved he was. 'Our hearts have been broken, and the world seems incomplete without him. 'He will stay in our hearts forever. 'He was the best big brother ever, who loved his big family. 'He was also very thoughtful, kind, bright and intelligent. 'His warm sense of humour always shone through all of his activities. 'He really enjoyed playing computer games, running, including park runs, and playing badminton. 'Many of his favourite days were when he was relaxing and playing whilst on holiday with his family, bodyboarding, swimming and looking after his younger siblings. 'Josh's close friends also meant a lot to him and he really enjoyed spending time with them. 'Our family would like to thank everyone for all of the wonderfully kind thoughts and messages which we have received. 'Thank you to everyone, too, for respecting our privacy at this very sad time.'
