FIR filed against Aurad BJP MLA's son in rape case
Bidar: A case was registered at the women's police station in Bidar city on Sunday against Prateek Chavvan, the son of BJP MLA Prabhu Chavvan from Aurad, for allegedly deceiving and raping a woman under the pretence of marriage. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to the complaint filed by a 25-year-old woman from Udgir, Maharashtra, she connected with Prateek on Instagram two years ago. Subsequently, he invited her to Bengaluru with marriage promises, where he allegedly raped her repeatedly at a hotel under duress. Prateek's family visited her residence and agreed to the marriage, the complainant said. An engagement ceremony took place in December 2023, with the wedding planned for May 2024. However, Prateek delayed the wedding, citing Lok Sabha elections and the monsoon. Prateek took her to Latur and Shirdi in Maharashtra, where he continued to threaten and sexually assault her, the complaint alleged. When her family approached Prateek's household to discuss the marriage, MLA Prabhu refused the alliance, she said. The case was registered under IPC sections 376(2)(N), 366, 324 and 506. At a media interaction on Monday, the woman appeared with her face covered and refuted Prabhu's allegations about her involvement with another boy. She said neither she nor her family had any political backing, and no one was orchestrating their actions. Regarding the woman's complaint to the women's commission, Prabhu alleged she maintained inappropriate communication with another person through messages and video calls. He said the marriage was cancelled following consultations with Banjara community leaders. Prabhu said he has a 30-year unblemished political career and arranged numerous marriages. A counter FIR was lodged by one of his brothers against eight members of the girl's family at Hokarn police station in Aurad taluk on Sunday. The accused individuals allegedly assaulted Prabhu and vandalised the doors of his residence in Aurad taluk. Bidar SP Pradeep Gunti said the investigation is ongoing.

Training held for women cops on child, women safety
Trichy: A one-day skill development training session was held at the Navalpattu Police Training School in Trichy on Friday to enhance the investigative skills of female police officers handling crimes against women and children. Organised for officers from the Trichy zone, covering the Trichy and Thanjavur police ranges, the training focused on legal provisions and the proactive role of law enforcement in safeguarding children's rights and ensuring justice for victims. Prabhu, a member of the District Child Welfare Committee, conducted the session, highlighting key legislations including the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, the Right to Education Act, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The training also stressed the importance of police involvement in preventing child-related crimes and creating a child-friendly society through active participation in child protection structures at village, block, district, panchayat, municipality, and ward levels, as well as gram sabha meetings.

Coroner calls for e-bikes to be registered as motorcycles
Victoria Police has said it will consider a coroner's recommendation to classify e-bikes as motorcycles, rather than bicycles. In findings released on Friday, coroner Audrey Jamieson recommended that Victoria Police, the state's Department of Transport and VicRoads consider a 'radical' measure requiring all e-bikes to be registered following the death of a Melbourne cyclist. The call follows her investigation into the death of 41-year-old Nitin Haldipur Prabhu, who died from a traumatic brain injury sustained in January last year. Prabhu, a skilled cyclist and father from Balwyn, had purchased the new e-bike for his daily commute to work just days before his death. Jamieson's findings revealed that the bike Prabhu was riding – equipped with a 250-watt motor and a top speed of 32km/h – exceeded the legal limits for unregistered e-bikes in Victoria, where anything more powerful than 200 watts or capable of exceeding 25km/h must be classified as a motorbike. Loading 'As such, [Prabhu] ought to have been wearing additional safety clothing, including a motorcycle helmet which meets Australian requirements,' the coroner's report said. 'This would have provided greater protection from injury, including head injury, upon contact with the road surface.' Prabhu fell from his bike in Mont Albert Road, Canterbury, during his ride home from work when he collided with another e-bike rider who was described by a witness as riding aggressively and attempting a high-speed overtake. 'According to a nearby motorist, [Prabhu] 'got a bit of a fright' and swerved left into the other rider, causing their wheels to collide,' the coroner's report said.

Veteran Tamil actor-filmmaker Velu Prabhakaran passes away
Veteran Tamil director, cinematographer and actor Velu Prabhakaran passed away in Chennai on Friday after a prolonged illness. He was 68. Velu Prabhakaran made his Tamil cinema debut as a cinematographer with the 1980 film Ivargal Vithyasamanavargal. In 1989, he transitioned to direction with his debut film Nalaya Manithan, starring Prabhu, Ajay Rathnam, Amala, and Jaishankar. That same year, he also stepped in front of the camera for the first time, acting in his own directorial venture Sariyana Jodi. Some of Velu Prabhakaran's popular movies include Nalaya Manithan, Puratchikkaaran, Asuran and Rajali. He was last seen in the 2025 film Gajaana. National Award-winning filmmaker Seenu Ramasamy wrote on X, 'I am saddened by the news of the passing of progressive thinker, cinematographer, and director Velu Prabhakaran. My deepest condolences to all those mourning his loss.' @Sylvianism posted on X, 'Say whatever, Velu Prabhakaran stayed true to his guts without compromise. Lesser known fact: He was the cinematographer for GM Kumar's Pickpocket and Uruvam. His Nalaya Manithan introduced a new genre, while Kadavul will remain memorable. And, Kadavul's music was Ilaiyaraaja.' The last rites of Velu Prabhakaran will be held on the evening of July 20.
