The Hidden Burden Of Vitiligo: Why Skin Treatments Alone Aren't Enough
Last Updated: People with vitiligo often carry a psychological burden. Experts have noted how this condition has considerable psychological and social impacts. Despite being widely perceived as a cosmetic condition, vitiligo carries a significant psychological burden, especially in societies where appearance holds more power. And with over a million people in India alone navigating this skin condition, experts say it's time we start treating vitiligo as a holistic health concern, not just a dermatological one. ' Vitiligo, frequently viewed as simply a cosmetic issue, has considerable psychological and social impacts, especially when depigmentation occurs on visible areas such as the face or hands," says Dr. Kanishka Meel, a psychiatrist on Practo. 'For many, it goes beyond the surface. Patients commonly experience poor self-esteem, chronic anxiety, body image problems, and even depression." The numbers back this up. A global study published in JAMA Dermatology reported that 55% of vitiligo patients experience moderate to severe depressive symptoms. Alarmingly, among Indian patients with visible lesions, this shoots up to nearly 90% – a statistic that reflects not just individual distress, but a deeper social failure. The Stigma of Being Seen The emotional toll is intensified by everyday experiences of social alienation. Many individuals living with vitiligo report being stared at, excluded, or treated as if their condition were contagious. 'The stigma surrounding vitiligo remains a difficult reality," Dr. Meel notes. 'There is a prevailing myth, especially in India, that vitiligo is a punishment for misdeeds in a past life. This karmic interpretation leads to shame and isolation, especially among women." This stigma doesn't just exist in public. It seeps into schools, workplaces, and families, shaping lives from a young age. Women, in particular, may face social rejection, reduced marital prospects, and professional hurdles, all stemming from the visibility of their condition. One lesser-discussed layer of emotional distress stems from fear about the condition being hereditary. 'Patients often express guilt or anxiety over whether their children might inherit the condition," Dr. Meel shares. 'This adds another layer of psychological strain that's often overlooked." Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder in which the body mistakenly attacks its pigment-producing cells. But that biological reality often creates a feedback loop with mental health. 'Long-term psychological stress can intensify autoimmune responses," explains Dr. Meel. 'There's a two-way relationship between depression and vitiligo – visible patches can trigger sadness and isolation, and depressive states may further compromise immune function and skin recovery," she adds. The Urgency of Early Care and Psychological Support Timely diagnosis and treatment can go a long way in managing vitiligo. From topical creams and light therapy to newer immunomodulatory strategies, dermatological treatments continue to advance. But Dr. Meel emphasises that treating the skin alone is not enough. 'Psychological counselling should be woven into treatment plans," she advises. 'Dermatologists should collaborate with psychiatrists to help patients navigate the emotional effects of the illness." Awareness programs in schools, workplaces, and communities can also shift public perception and support those who live with the condition. 'Support structures significantly alter the course. A subtle gesture – like a classmate correcting a misunderstanding, or a parent offering empathy – can strengthen someone's mental resilience enormously," she says. Can Diet Help Vitiligo Too? Possibly While there's no specific diet that cures vitiligo, nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods can help regulate immune function and reduce stress levels. Many patients also find value in lifestyle practices that focus on gut health, mindfulness, and emotional well-being, complementing medical care. In essence, early care, compassionate communities, and informed conversations are crucial to support those navigating vitiligo, not just as patients, but as whole human beings. Protecting Children During Monsoon: Common Illnesses And How To Prevent Them
Last Updated: With their developing immunity, children are more prone to illnesses and infections during the rainy season. An expert shares how parents can protect their kids this monsoon. The monsoon season offers welcome relief from the scorching summer, but it also creates ideal conditions for the spread of various infections. Children, with their still-developing immune systems and the natural tendency for outdoor play, are particularly vulnerable during this time. Dr Manoj A G, Consultant Physician on Practo, helps us understand the common illnesses during monsoon and how implementing proactive measures is crucial for parents to safeguard their children's health throughout the rainy season. Common Monsoon Illnesses in Children: Causes and Symptoms 1. Viral Fevers & Colds: Triggered by sudden weather shifts, high humidity, and close contact in schools, viral infections are common. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough, and a runny nose. 2. Influenza (Flu): Influenza easily spreads via airborne droplets in crowded spaces. More intense than a cold, flu symptoms include high fever, chills, fatigue, and body aches. Annual flu shots are highly recommended. 3. Dengue & Chikungunya: Spread by Aedes mosquitoes breeding in stagnant water, dengue and chikungunya are common monsoon illnesses. Watch for high fever, severe headaches, joint pain, and rashes. In dengue, bleeding gums and low platelets are serious red flags. 4. Gastrointestinal Infections: Often caused by contaminated water or unsafe street food. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and dehydration. 6. Leptospirosis: This bacterial infection spreads through floodwater contaminated with rat urine. This infection is common among kids playing barefoot. The symptoms include fever, muscle aches, red eyes, and fatigue. How Parents Can Safeguard Their Children From Monsoon Illnesses Prioritize Hygiene: Encourage frequent handwashing, trimmed nails, and no face-touching after outdoor play. Ensure Safe Drinking Water: Only give children boiled or filtered water. Avoid roadside drinks, cut fruits, or flavoured ice. Boost Immunity Through Diet: Include Vitamin C-rich fruits like guava and oranges, warm soups, turmeric milk, and curd in daily meals. Avoid Risky Foods: Say no to street food, raw salads, and uncovered snacks. Stick to home-cooked, well-cooked meals. Prevent Mosquito Bites: Use nets, child-safe repellents, and full-sleeve clothing. Regularly empty stagnant water from pots, coolers, and toys. Keep Clothes Dry: Change wet clothes promptly. Ensure garments are washed and completely dried before reuse. When To Call The Doctor Dr Manoj notes that parents should seek medical help if the child shows these symptoms: With simple, proactive care, clean water, wholesome food, mosquito control, and hygiene, monsoons can be both joyful and safe. India-based digital healthcare platform Practo launches instant online access services in UAE
Practo, an India-based digital healthcare platform, announced going live in the UAE, enabling users in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah to book appointments with verified doctors and access thousands of patient reviews. Some of the early clinics and hospitals partnering with include e-Kaya Skin Clinic, Sulaiman Habib Hospital and Clinics, Micris Dental, Smile on Dental Clinic and Quintinha hospitals, the platform said. Shashank ND, Co-founder & CEO, Practo, said in today's world, and particularly in a market such as the UAE, access to quality healthcare should not be defined by proximity alone. 'Our experience has shown that patient reviews are a trusted indicator for users to make a decision, and we are now happy to extend this opportunity to users in the UAE,' he said. Shashank said the initial response to the online access services has been overwhelmingly positive. Practo said it already has more than 31,000 doctors, 3,000 healthcare facilities, and over 50,000 monthly users already accessing the platform in the UAE. As an insurance-led healthcare market, Dubai places strong emphasis on coverage when it comes to accessing care. Practo said it already has insurance data at the establishment level and will make this available at the doctor level by the end of the month, enabling more informed patient decisions. The launch builds on Practo's over 10-year presence in the UAE through Insta by Practo, its hospital management software that powers operations at leading healthcare institutions across the region.
