City & suburbs to get rain starting today, says IMD

Chennai: After June ended with scorching days and humid nights, the city may finally get some respite this week with the return of evening thunderstorms. Weather models indicated a fresh spell of widespread rainfall in the city and suburbs starting Wednesday, till Sunday. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city and suburbs are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday under partly cloudy skies. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 37°C-38°C and 28°C-29°C respectively. "On Wednesday, the city and suburbs may receive light to moderate rainfall over some areas. Skies may be partly cloudy," the IMD bulletin read. You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai Meteorologists attribute the rainfall possibility to a weakening of the southwest monsoon winds along the west coast. This weakening allows sea breeze to move inland, creating favourable wind convergence and triggering convective activity that leads to thunderstorms. Chennai typically receives about 10cm of rainfall in July. Last month, the city saw around 7cm. IMD has also issued a forecast for light to moderate rainfall at isolated locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until July 7. However, weather blogger Pradeep John cautioned that rainfall forecasts remain uncertain. "There is a 50% chance for rain activity," he said. On Tuesday, some suburban areas received light rain spells. Rain gauges in Anna University and Sathyabhama University recorded 0.5mm rainfall. Earlier, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 36.3°C and 36.9°C. On Monday, IMD released a monthly forecast which said the city and suburbs may receive near normal rainfall and record below normal maximum temperature and above normal night temperatures. City may receive rain over next few days

Chennai: The workweek ended on a wet note for several suburban localities, which recorded the highest rainfall in the state on Friday evening, with thunderstorms bringing 4cm-5 cm of rain. Meteorologists and bloggers say that daily evening rainfall with thunderstorms is likely in the city and suburbs over the next few days. On Sunday, after a hot day with temperatures inching close to 40°C, light to moderate rainfall may occur over the city and surrounding areas. "Friday's thunderstorms were triggered by wind convergence caused by sea breeze meeting heat-built land temperatures and moisture-laden westerlies. If similar conditions persist, more evening showers are likely," said a meteorologist. According to the IMD, on Sunday, the city and suburbs may experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some areas. Skies may be partly cloudy, with a maximum temperature of 37°C-38°C and a minimum of 28°C-29°C. Rain is also likely at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till June 27. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like ChompChamp: The Last Dog Toy You'll Ever Need to Buy! The IMD has warned of discomfort in parts of the state due to high humidity and heat. "There are chances of evening thunderstorms daily, but these will likely be isolated spells," said weather blogger Pradeep John. On Saturday, city temperatures dropped slightly after a warm spell since June 17, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recording 35.5°C and 35.7°C, about 1.5°C below normal. Humidity levels also dropped, from 67%-69% at 8.30 am to 45-%-67% by 5.30 pm. Friday's sharp evening spell, after days of dry and hot weather, brought 2.4 mm of rainfall in Nungambakkam and 14.8 mm in Meenambakkam. Since June 1, Chennai recorded 61.5 mm of rainfall, about 43% above normal. This includes 76.9 mm in Nungambakkam (24.7 mm excess) and 18.2 mm in Meenambakkam (36.1 mm deficit). Tamil Nadu, during the same period, recorded 42.2 mm, about 14% above normal.

Summer takes a back seat in Tamil Nadu: Widespread rain likely till May 20

CHENNAI: The summer heat has eased a little across Tamil Nadu with widespread rains forecast to continue till May 20, bringing a much-needed respite from humid conditions. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has attributed the change in weather to an upper air circulation, which is likely to bring heavy rainfall to north districts and parts of the delta region. Heavy rainfall is likely in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, and Tiruvannamalai on Saturday. On Sunday, rain is expected to shift to districts including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchy, Salem, and Kallakurichi. The spell is likely to persist till May 20. Weather conditions are also being influenced by the early advancement of the southwest monsoon, which is expected to trigger systems over both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal - cutting short the summer spell. Chennai, which often sizzles past the 40°C mark in May, has not recorded a single 40°C day so far this year. If the current weather holds, the city might entirely skip breaching the 40°C threshold this summer. Weather blogger Pradeep John described this year as 'one of the most unique' for Tamil Nadu. 'There's been no heatwave so far, and Chennai is unlikely to cross 40°C-similar to 2022, 2018, and 2004,' he said. By the weekend, the upper air circulation is expected to move closer, with easterly winds falling over the north Tamil Nadu and Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Chengalpattu region, bringing good rainfall. Meanwhile, the RMC in a post on 'X' said the data till May 15 did not indicate cooler days over Chennai this season. While the mercury did not touch 40°C, temperatures hovered slightly above normal for a few days earlier this month, coupled with high humidity, making conditions uncomfortable during the first half of May. However, the RMC has forecast below-normal maximum temperatures for the coming week, thanks to persistent cloud cover and chances of light to moderate rainfall. On Friday, Erode recorded the highest temperature in the state at 40.2°C.

Seabreeze brings some relief to the city, not the suburbs

Chennai: High temperatures continue to scorch interior districts and suburbs during peak summer season, but the sea breeze is keeping the heat at bay in the core city areas. On Saturday, Meenambakkam observatory, which covers the suburbs, recorded a maximum temperature of 39.6°C — 2.5°C above normal. Nungambakkam observatory recorded 37.1°C. Though these temperatures are relatively lower in the city, the sea breeze led to a spike in humidity, rising to around 70%, causing discomfort. Other districts such as Erode, Karur, Madurai, Trichy, and Salem reported temperatures between 38°C and 40°C. Experts said while sea breeze is helping regulate temperatures in the city, it takes time to reach interior regions — by which time the mercury tends to shoot up. "On Saturday, maximum temperatures are likely to be 2°C –3°C above normal over isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu. From May 5 to 7, day temperatures may be near normal," an IMD bulletin said. Weather bloggers said that while hot days are likely to continue in the interior districts, he city also has chances of light spells of rain in some areas."Temperatures are expected to gradually reduce due to rainfall in the state over the next week," blogger Pradeep John said in a post.
